Letter to the Editor, Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs, from Alti Rodal, Co-Director, Ukrainian Jewish Encounter, regarding the article by Simon Geissbühler, "The Ukrainian Crisis and the Jews: A Time for Hope or Despair" Ukraine has experienced a further six turbulent months since publication of Simon Geissbühler’s article on the Ukrainian crisis and its implications for Jews. Developments and media coverage since then have corroborated his main finding that Russia's characterizations of the Maidan protests as the work of anti-Semites and fascists were without foundation in reality. Such characterizations have been roundly dismissed by Jewish leaders in Ukraine and elsewhere, as well as in the mainstream media, as cynical Russian propaganda. While Geissbühler's analysis is by and large sound and drawn from a variety of sources, it also delivers, through its choice of emphasis and wording, misrepresentations on key issues – concern about anti-Semitism on the part of Jewish leaders in Ukraine, the impact of the Maidan experience on the self-identification of many Jews in Ukraine, and the stereotyping of ethnic Ukrainians. While endorsing the finding that anti-Semitism was not a significant factor among the Maidan protesters and in contemporary Ukraine, Geissbühler understates the extent to which Ukrainian Jewish leaders asserted this fact. For example, in addition to reporting on the statements made in this regard by Joseph Zissels, Chairman of the Vaad of Ukraine, and Abraham Foxman, head of the Anti-Defamation League, Geissbühler might

  • Between Jerusalem & Rome
2 Between Jerusalem and Rome Reflections on 50 Years of Nostra Aetate1 Preamble In the biblical account of creation, God fashions a single human being as the progenitor of all humanity. Thus, the Bible's unmistakable message is that all human beings are members of a single family. And after the deluge of Noah, this message is reinforced when the new phase of history is once again inaugurated by a single family. In the beginning, God’s providence is exercised over a universal, undifferentiated humanity. As God chose Avraham, and subsequently Yitzchak and Yaakov, He entrusted them with a dual mission: to found the nation of Israel that would inherit, settle and establish a model society in the holy, promised land of Israel, all while serving as a source of light for all mankind. Ever since, particularly in the aftermath of the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 C.E. by the Romans, we Jews encountered persecution after exile after persecution. And yet, the 1 The following individuals represented the three organizations that are signatories to this document in the committees that authored the document: For the Conference of European Rabbis: Rabbis Pinchas Goldschmidt (CER president), Arie Folger (chairman of the committee), Yaakov Bleich, Riccardo Di Segni, Bruno Fiszon, Jonathan Guttentag, René Gutman, Moché Lewin, Aryeh Ralbag & Yihia Teboul. • Central and Eastern Europe
Central and Eastern Europe Federal Republic of Germany National Affairs ±. HE PERIOD 1994 THROUGH the first half of 1995 was marked by a number of significant events. Germany's ruling conservative coalition survived a turbulent election in 1994, but lost ground to center-left parties. Far-right parties became politically insignificant, due to dropping voter support and internal strife. The pullout of most foreign troops from German soil gave new political weight to unified Germany, prompting the government to start redefining the country's inter- national role. The country's worst postwar recession ended, but recovery was un- even, and unemployment remained at close to 10 percent. Finally, a multitude of 50th-anniversary commemoration ceremonies marked the last stages of World War II and Germany's defeat and surrender. In the summer of 1994, all Russian troops withdrew from Germany, and the Western allied troops pulled out of Berlin. In July, U.S. president Bill Clinton visited Germany to assure the Germans of the strength of the U.S.-German partnership. In Berlin, Clinton visited the reconstructed New Synagogue in the eastern part of the city (see "Religion," below). 50TH-ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION The growing interest in recent years in Germany's Nazi past was reflected in the thousands of commemorative events marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the war, including events related to the destruction of the Jews. Lectures, exhibitions, concerts, panel discussions, and official ceremonies were organized by government authorities as well as by private groups. There was also extensive media coverage of events, including hundreds of radio and television programs focusing on the Holocaust and Jewish topics.
