The Gr8 Db8, David Crystal , 2008, 0199543402, 9780199543403 Txtng: The Gr8 Db8, David Crystal , 2008, 0199543402, 9780199543403. This book takes a long hard look at the text- messaging phenomenon and its effects on literacy, language, and society. Young people who seem to spend much of their time texting sometimes appear unable or unwilling to write much else. Media outrage has ensued. "It is bleak, bald, sad shorthand," writes a commentator in the UK Guardian. "It masks dyslexia, poor spelling, and mental laziness." Exam answers using textese and reports that examiners find them acceptable have led to headlines in the tabloids and leaders in the qualities. Do young people text as much as people think? Do adults? Does texting spell the end of literacy? Is there a panic in the media? David Crystal looks at the evidence. He investigates how texting began and who uses it, why and what for. He shows how to interpret its mix of pictograms, logograms, abbreviations, symbols, and wordplay, and how it works in different languages. He explores the ways similar devices have been used in different eras and discovers that the texting system of conveying sounds and meaning goes back a long way, all the way in fact to the origins of writing - and he concludes that far from hindering literacy, texting may turn out to help it. Prester John, John Buchan , 2012, 177556116X, 9781775561163. Fans of H. Rider Haggard's action-adventure novels will be swept away by John Buchan's Prester John, a thrill-a-minute tale set in colonial Africa. Freedom: The Courage to Be Yourself, Osho , 2007, 1429907711, 9781429907712. In Freedom, Osho outlines three stages of freedom. The first is "freedom from," which is a freedom that comes from breaking out of what he calls the "psychological slavery" imposed by outside forces such as parents, society, or religion. The next stage is "freedom for," a positive freedom that comes from embracing and creating something---a fulfilling relationship, for example, or an artistic or humanitarian vision. And lastly there is "just freedom," the highest and ultimate freedom. This last freedom is more than being for or against something; it is the freedom of simply being oneself and responding truthfully to each moment. The Insights for a New Way of Living series aims to shine light on beliefs and attitudes that prevent individuals from being their true selves. The text is an artful mix of compassion and humor, and readers are encouraged to confront what they would most like to avoid, which in turn provides the key to true insight and power.Freedom helps readers to identify the obstacles to their freedom, both circumstantial and self-imposed, to choose their battles wisely, and to find the courage to be true to themselves. Depraved English, Peter Novobatzky, Ammon Shea , 2011, 0709091745, 9780709091745. From "aboiement" to "zooerastia," a guided tour of the lantrified underbelly of the English langauage This unusual, un-put-downable little volume collects more than three hundred of the English language's most disgusting, offensive, and obscene words--words that have fallen out of common usage but will no doubt delight, amuse, and in some cases prove surprisingly useful. Who hasn't searched for the right word to describe a colleague's "maschalephidrosis" (runaway armpit perspiration), a boss's "pleonexia" (insane greed), or a buddy's "fumosities" (ill-smelling vapors from a drunken person's belches)? Word lovers, chronic insulters, "berayers," "bescumbers," and "bespewers" need feel like tongue-tied "witlings" no more: Finding the correct, "keck"-inspiring word just got a whole lot easier. • WSOP 2008: Sieben Topspieler Erreichen Den Final Table Beim No-Limit 2-7 Lowball

  • 466 Make Main Event Day 2A Cut
WSOP 2008 Day 41: 466 make Main Event Day 2a cut There may have been 1,251 players coming into Day 2a of the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event on Tuesday, but only 466 came out of it by the time the last hand was dealt for the day. By the end of the day, all eyes were on Brian Schaedlich, from Cleveland, Ohio, who was sitting with one of the most impressive chip leads for a player at the end of a Day 2 that the WSOP has seen in years. He ended the day with about USD 801,000 in chips, and his closest rival is sitting with just USD 397,000. Brandon Adams is sitting in a strong position as well after Day 2a with USD 353,600. The Full Tilt Poker pro had a good stack of more than USD 70k after his Day 1 and said he played a lot of smaller and mid-size pots on Day 2a to continue his climb. „Today I started out playing very fast but then treaded water for a while,“ Adams said in his interview with PokerListings. „I think I ended up the second level of the day with around USD 160,000. I just had a good level and got it all the way up to USD 207,000.“ As he continued to accumulate chips, Adams landed at the ESPN feature table as well, where he had to play under the watchful eyes of the cameras. Adams is a renowned cash-game player who has managed to keep a fairly low tournament profile so far, but his exposure in the Main Event if he goes deep could change all that.
