The company enjoys significant net cash and bank balances because of the healthy cash flow generation, despite the modest capital expenditure undertaken in the past. At the consolidated level, the company had cash and cash equivalents (including liquid investments) of Rs. 746.2 crore as on March 31, 2019 compared to total debt of Rs. 262.7 crore. The ratings also favourably factor in the financial flexibility enjoyed by UEPL by being a part of the Ramoji Group. The ratings continue to reflect the strong market position of Eenadu newspaper and ETV-Telugu channel (under UEPL’s 50.94% subsidiary, Eenadu Television Private Limited or ETPL) in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The same is also reflected in the modest revenue growth and healthy operating profit margins (OPM) of the company over the years. The newsprint prices increased significantly in FY2019, resulting in a moderation in Eenadu division’s OPM to 26.9% in FY2019 (as per provisional financials) from 31.0% in FY2018.

Further, Margadarsi Marketing Private Limited closed seven stores in the last two years which has reduced the operational losses in Kalanjali division. The rating is also constrained by high geographic concentration of revenues with Telangana and Andhra markets together contributing over ~95% of revenues; and high working capital requirement characterised by high inventory holding inherent in the textile retailing business. However, the rating positively factors in MMPL being as part of the Ramoji group with its flagship company Ushodaya Enterprises Private Limited (UEPL, rated at [ICRA]AA (Stable) /[ICRA]A1+) from where it receives considerable financial support by way of advances for the services rendered, leverage its large customer base of Eenadu (regional daily issue by UEPL) with discounts for its ad campaigns in ETV network & Eenadu paper and lower rentals to be paid at 2% of sales from the building facilities leased to MMPL.

Such nexus is further complicated by the involvement of caste. The present essay examines the trajectory of Eenadu, a Telugu daily in Andhra Pradesh, and its political manoeuvrings in favour of the Kamma-dominated Telugu Desam Party. Describing the entry of Eenadu, the essay moves to examine the newspaper’s consistent support of the TDP and its stance against the Congress in AP through the political fortunes for N.T. Ramarao, Chandrababu Naidu and Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. Keywords Andhra Pradesh, anti-arrack, Eenadu, media politics, political power, Ramoji Rao Introduction The media rarely adheres to the cardinal principles of the fourth estate— impartiality and objectivity. Arguably, its current role relies on manufacturing biased views and opinions rather than providing information and an analysis of news, views or events. In this context, the present essay examines the trajectory of the newspaper Eenadu in Andhra Pradesh (AP),3 and its political manoeuvrings in favour of the Kamma caste and Kamma-dominated Telugu Desam Party (TDP). 2019-2906-AJMMC 1 Multiple Media Business Scenario: A Study of 2 Newspaper Houses in India 3 4 The newspaper industry in India has sustained and in fact prospered in times when the print 5 media all around the world, especially in the western countries, is suffering setbacks. In such 6 hard times, when new media and electronic media are everybody’s favorite, not all the 7 newspapers in India have managed to survive. While the vernacular press has deepened its 8 reach, the English press has seen decline, with the exception of The Times of India. Hence, a 9 need arises to understand the business model in terms of how they have managed to thrive 10 under such a competitive market. Also, an attempt needs to be made to explore their ownership 11 pattern, branding, marketing and management techniques. This study aims to analyze and 12 study the present print media scenario. For the purpose of the study, the top newspapers of the 13 country in 2017 (according to ABC), in terms of circulation- i.e. Dainik Jagran, Dainik 14 Bhaskar, Hindustan, The Times of India, Amar Ujala, Malayala Manorama, Eenadu, 15 Rajasthan Patrika, Daily Thanthi and Mathrubhumi have been considered. July 16, 2020 Ushodaya Enterprises Private Limited: Ratings reaffirmed Summary of rating action Previous Rated Amount Current Rated Amount Instrument* Rating Action (Rs. crore) (Rs. crore) Term Loans 240.13 240.13 [ICRA]AA (Stable); reaffirmed Short-term, Fund-based Limits 135.0 135.0 [ICRA]A1+; reaffirmed Short-term, Non-fund Based 10.0 10.0 [ICRA]A1+; reaffirmed Limits Total 385.13 385.13 *Instrument details are provided in Annexure-1 Rationale The ratings reflect the healthy financial profile of Ushodaya Enterprises Private Limited (UEPL) as characterised by robust debt servicing indicators, limited debt levels and strong liquidity position. The company had sizeable unencumbered cash and bank balances and liquid investments of Rs. 1,407.2 crore (at the consolidated level, as on March 31, 2020) against a total consolidated debt of Rs. 253.2 crore as on March 31, 2020. The ratings continue to reflect the strong market position of the Eenadu newspaper and the ETV-Telugu channel (under UEPL’s 50.94% subsidiary, Eenadu Television Private Limited or ETPL) in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The ratings also favourably factor in the financial flexibility enjoyed by UEPL as part of the Ramoji Group. UEPL’s operating profit margins (OPM) at the standalone level had weakened over FY2019 and FY2020 owing to high (imported) newsprint costs and a subdued macro environment, which adversely impacted the advertisement revenues. Newsprint prices had increased by 28%1 in FY2019 owing to the rise in demand for virgin pulp-based newsprint (following the ban on import of waste paper by China). While the newsprint prices softened from Q4 FY2019 onwards, UEPL’s cost of consumption of newsprint, remained high in FY2020 due to accumulation of high-priced newsprint stocks towards the end of FY2019, which were consumed by UEPL till June 2020.
