Dear Friends of Marmion,

Marmion is blessed to have the generous support of our alumni, parents (past and present) and dear friends who invest in the many ministries of the Marmion monks. This 2017-18 Annual Report recognizes those who provided financial support to the Abbey, Academy, Abbey Farms and Guatemala Priory over this past fiscal year (July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018).

During this fiscal year, Marmion was blessed to receive $3,545,298 in donations in support of the Abbey, Academy, Abbey Farms and the Guatemala Priory. These generous gifts came from 1,929 individual donors (couples are counted as one) from 47 states and 4 countries outside of the U.S. (see map below).

With your help, we educated 600 young men (Marmion and Colegio Seminario San José), provided $800,000 in financial aid and scholarships, installed air conditioning on the bottom floor of the YenderHall Classroom Building, renovated and reopened the after-school snack shop, purchased new curtains for the stage and reroofed Alumni Hall and the main Abbey building, added new dual-credit courses and additional educational programing, planned the groundbreaking of the Abbey Farms Apple Orchard, and continued to serve the people of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. This is just a snapshot of what was achieved as a result of donations to Marmion.

We are excited to announce that for the first time the MARMION FUND goal of $1.25 million was not only achieved, but exceeded. Participation in the annual fund mailing, Giving Tuesday, Marmathon, Salute to Youth, the BIG GIVE, the Guardian Angel Fund and Alumni Association events support the MARMION FUND efforts to fill the gap between tuition ($12,150) and the cost of educating our students (a gap of $2,250 per student).

Donations that are directed to the Abbey help defray the cost of health care, education for our younger monks, and building maintenance. Abbey Farms continues to grow with its goal of providing additional revenue for the monks. The Farm itself collects donations to continue to build and maintain over 100 acres of farmland and buildings.

The Guatemala Mission relies on donations from the United States in order to continue to educate the underserved area of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. The monks at the San José Priory provide educational training for young men and extensive pastoral work to the area residents.

Hammes Marycrest House to serve as athletic storage and support space for Abbey Farms By Nancy Hansen, Assistant Director of Advancement

Once again, thanks to the philanthropic efforts of some special Marmion supporters, renovations of the Hammes Marycrest House are underway to turn the former infirmary (when Marmion was a residential school) into more usable space. The original donors in 1966 were Jerry and Dorene Hammes ‘49. Once finished, Hammes Marycrest will serve as much needed storage for athletics, as well as offices, a showroom and a meeting room to support the growing activities of Abbey Farms. Abbey Farms is continuously looking for new ways to generate resources to support the monks of Marmion Abbey and is in need of additional space to advance all of its endeavors. The Farm offers a variety of fun activities for the family, including the annual fall festival, Pumpkin Daze; sale of Christmas trees; a seasonal store; produce and more. Abbey Farms’ primary venue space is The Nagel Emporium, with over 8,000 square feet of private space. The vintage- inspired barn seats up to 300 guests. All proceeds from events and product sales at Abbey Farms benefit the monks of Marmion Abbey and we are blessed to see increased activity on the farm. This past year Abbey Farms was recognized as a winner of the Daily Herald Business Ledger’s 28th Annual Award for Business Excellence in the not-for-profit category this year.

John G. Bryan ’50 Memorial Scholarship Fund By: Fr. Charles Reichenbacher OSB ’59, Director of Planned Giving

John Bryan ’50 of Aurora died April 21, 2012. His wife Marge began a perpetual Scholarship Fund in John’s memory, with the first scholarship being offered this winter to a future member of the class of 2023. This new fund will be formally announced at the Abbot Marmion Society Dinner in October 2018. John and Marge are the parents of John ’81, Michael ’82, and Dr. Kevin ’85.

John was president and owner of the Geneva Construction Company, a leading road building company in northern Illinois. John was an avid golfer (two-time champion of the Aurora Country Club) and a Notre Dame University graduate and a passionate Irish fan.

All Marmion scholarships are awarded based on a competitive entrance exam, are for academically gifted students and awarded for four years. The restriction on the Bryan scholarship is that it must be awarded to a Catholic student.

Perpetual funds have to reach special funding levels ($50,000+ for academic scholarships) and only the annual interest earned is expended, but the principal can be invaded if necessary. These funds can be established with once-only gifts or bequests, or through a series of gifts.

Snack Shop Reopens The Snack Shop reopened in August of 2017 thanks to donations from the Mothers’ Club and others. Located adjacent to the Lux Dining Hall, the Snack Shop now provides a variety of food options for students staying after school for athletic practices and extra-curricular activities.

Students and faculty/staff alike can enjoy a break and refuel on school days from the hours of 2:45-5:00 PM. Belgio’s Catering stocks the Snack Shop with cold drinks, wraps, fruit and pasta salads, soup and pasta bowls, candy bars, chips, popcorn, fruit smoothies and soft pretzels. “We will be adding a few more items this year like milk shakes and personal pan pizzas,” shared Tom Belgio of Belgio’s Catering. “And if a student requests a certain item we try to bring it in and if it sells well we continue to offer it,” he added. “We truly appreciate our partnership with Marmion and we are very excited to expand our offerings in the snack shop this coming fall.” Next time you are on campus, we encourage you to stop by and check it out. Mothers’ Club donation provides new student furniture At Marmion moms love to get involved and accomplish a great deal on and off campus. Some of the activities include: Back to School Night, Christmas Dinner Dance, Grandparents’ Day and the Mothers’ Club Spring Luncheon. Although they are not a fundraising organization, they occasionally surprise us with a check to support a special project.

Mothers’ Club donations from the past two years were used for new furniture in the foyer between the Alumni Hall Gymnasium and Snack Shop.
