Nelson and Victoria Birkbeck Texas Tech University Brigham Young University This study examined level of engagement with Disney Princess media/products as it relates to gender- stereotypical behavior, body esteem (i.e. body image), and prosocial behavior during early childhood. Participants consisted of 198 children (Mage = 58 months), who were tested at two time points (approxi- mately 1 year apart). Data consisted of parent and teacher reports, and child observations in a toy prefer- ence task. Longitudinal results revealed that Disney Princess engagement was associated with more female gender-stereotypical behavior 1 year later, even after controlling for initial levels of gender-stereotypical behavior. Parental mediation strengthened associations between princess engagement and adherence to female gender-stereotypical behavior for both girls and boys, and for body esteem and prosocial behavior for boys only. “I am a princess.     The Normalization of Sara: An Inversion of Queerness in Filmed Versions of Burnett's A Little Princess Vibiana Bowman Cvetkovic A Little Princess (ALP)1 is one of Frances Hodgson Burnett's most popular works. It is the riches-to rags-to riches story of a plucky orphan, Sara Crewe, and chronicles her adventures and misadventures at a boarding school run by the cold and cruel Miss Minchin. As she did with several of her other stories, Burnett reused and reworked the tale of Sara in a variety of formats and genres: a three-part short story “Sara Crewe or What Happened at Miss Minchin's,” which appeared in St. Nicholas Magazine (December 1887 through January 1888); a novella of the same name (1888); a play, The Little Princess (1902); and a novel, A Little Princess: Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe, Now Told for the First Time (1905) (Bixler “Chronology”). The character of Sara, the eponymous “Little Princess,” has a powerful pull. To date, there have been three major film adaptations of ALP: a black-and-white silent film version starring Mary Pickford (1917); a Technicolor, musical version with Shirley Temple (1939); and a 1995 version directed by Alfonso Cuarón with Liesel Matthews (IMDB). Sara's magnetism rests in her strength of character. The objective of this study is to describe the importance of social skill in the novel based on the sociological approach. The writer uses qualitative method. The data sources consist of primary data and secondary data sources. The primary data source is A Little Princess novel and the secondary data sources are the other sources related to the analysis. The method of the data collection is library research. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis. The outcome of the study is shown in the following conclusions. First, Burnett describes the theme of the novel that life is unbearable without the ability to draw courage and to build hope. It gives emphasis that people should be aware of the way of treating others and should appreciate and respect each other as well as they respect themselves. Second, based on sociological analysis, it shows that there is a correlation between A Little Princess novel and social realities of English society in the early twentieth century.

This thesis will argue that these transformations in the original tale reveal the cultural changes that have occurred since each previous adaptation. The A Little Princess tale was rewritten two times after it was first published. The first edition of this story was called Sara Crewe, or, What Happened at Miss Minchin’s. After the story was rewritten as a serial and then reworked as a children’s play, Burnett rewrote the entire story, adding new passages and sections to it until it appeared as A Little Princess, Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe Now Told For the First time (Marian E. Brown 199).
