Duke Energy is providing more than $1 million in grants to 33 Florida-based educational programs through its foundation. More than 100,000 students will benefit directly from the grants, which will help fund projects in science, technolo- gy, engineering and math, or STEM, fields. FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools was awarded $30,000. It is using the grant for envi- ronmental and STEM training for students at Rose Bay and Lyonia Preserve as well as Teacher Mini-Grants, which focus on solar energy related educational programs, said Cynthia Ramirez, FUTURES executive director, in a news release. “This year’s grant also was used for elementary and secondary level solar energy ‘train the teacher’ initiatives. Many of the teachers immedi- ately implemented the les- sons the next day within Volu- sia County classrooms through the use of the hands- on kits purchased through this amazing Duke Energy grant.” Out From page B3
