Tek cijela posuda ponudila bi pravi odgovor što se na njoj prikazalo. Kad je godine 1991. obnovljen Odjel za prirodoslovlje i matematiku Matice hr­ vatske, okupio je u svojim redovima probrano rodoljubno članstvo, iskusne i razborite poznavatelje struke koje je nesebično radilo na otkrivanju i očuvanju naše prirodoznan­ stvene baštine. Kad se tome pridoda i različitost zanimanja i obrazovanja članstva koje djeluje na zajedničkom cilju, bilo je to pravo bogatstvo znanja i informacija. Najvažnija djelatnost Odjela ogleda se u organiziranju znanstvenih skupova pod nazivom Hrvatski prirodoslovci, kojih je dosad bilo osamnaest. Na tim se skupovima stvara građa hrvatske, ne samo prirodoznanstvene nego i intelektualne povijesti. Čla­ novi Odjela nerijetko su i sami aktivni sudionici stvaranja te povijesti, ili su imali čast raditi ili surađivati s velikanima našega prirodoslovlja ili se pak bave njihovom znan­ stvenom ili stručnom disciplinom. Potvrdu izvrsnosti našim skupovima odaje i Hrvat­ ska akademija znanosti i umjetnosti, svojim redovitim pokroviteljstvom. U svome časopisu Prirodoslovlje, kao pisanom spomeniku hrvatskim prirodoslov­ cima koji se ne smiju zaboraviti, posebice oni koji su tijekom povijesti stvarali pod do­ minacijom drugih naroda, pod raznim ideološkim pritiscima i diktaturama – svemu usprkos. Tako se časopis Prirodoslovlje profilirao kao jedini znanstveni časopis u Repu­ blici Hrvatskoj koji se bavi hrvatskom prirodoslovnom baštinom, pišući o zaslužnim velikanima i pokretačima razvoja prirodnih znanosti na našem tlu, ili pak onima o kojima se nije pisalo ili ih se premalo spominjalo i uvažavalo. Naši skupovi “hrvatski prirodoslovci” sele se diljem Lijepe Naše, svake godine u drugi grad, drugu županiju i onda ćemo ispočetka. Na jednom skupu nije moguće obraditi sve one o kojima treba go­ voriti i pisati. Osim znanstvene baštine, Odjel se bavi i redovitim održavanjem Znanstvenih tri­ bina na kojima njegovi članovi i pozvani eminentni predavači govore o aktualnim znanstvenim temama i postignućima, što je opet građa za jedan drugi profil (u naravi svezak) našega časopisa Prirodoslovlje. Potvrdu izvrsnosti časopisa iskazalo nam je Ministarstvo prosvjete i športa, Za­ vod za unaprjeđivanje školstva, svojim mišljenjem od 26. lipnja 2002., još na počet­ ku izlaženja časopisa: “... utvrdili smo da je časopis usmjeren prema njegovanju hrvat­ PRIRODOSLOVLJE 9(1-2) 1 – 2 (2009) 1 Proslov ske znanstvene baštine i popularnom prikazivanju suvremenih znanstvenih doprinosa. Stoga smatramo korisnim za učitelje i učenike osnovne i srednje škole uporabiti časopis kao dodatni izvor znanja u nastavnom području prirodoslovlja za pripremu nastave, seminarske i maturalne radove te ostale učeničke samostalne radove sa svrhom upozna­ vanja hrvatskih prirodoslovaca i njihova doprinosa znanosti.” Tome cilju teži i sadašnje uredništvo časopisa, III. saziva. Časopis se distribuira bes­ platno po školama, zasad po jedan­dva primjerka, za knjižnicu i nastavnike s podru­ čja prirodoslovlja, a posebno zainteresirani pojedinci, članovi Matice, mogu ga naruči­ ti izravno. U ovome primjerku časopisa Prirodoslovlje predstavljamo Vam dio znanstvenoga doprinosa velikana Vukovarsko­srijemske županije, na čelu s Leopoldom Ružičkom, pr­ vim Hrvatom dobitnikom Nobelove nagrade, kako je napisao akademik Nenad Tri­ najstić. Objašnjenje nastanka, razvoja i povlačenje ledenih doba tijekom 650 tisuća godina približili su nam Tatjana Kren i Branko Hanžek u svome članku o Milutinu Milan­ koviću, a člankom o slavonskim pučkim kalendarima vrijedna Tatjana upoznaje nas sa sustavnim doprinosom obrazovanju, opismenjavanju i očuvanju vjerskog i nacional­ nog identiteta u teškim vremenima nakon oslobođenja od Turaka. S razvojem ljekarništva i farmakologije upoznaju nas autorice Suzana Inić (Juli­ je Domac) i Ljerka Regula­Bevilacqua (Franjo Benzinger). O zaslužnim matemati­ čarima, koji su stasali nakon raspada Austro­Ugarske Monarhije, pišu Darko Veljan (o slavnom Željku Markoviću) i Radoslav Galić (o malo poznatom Stjepanu Bohni­ čeku). Zanimljivo je da su se i dva književnika ogledala u prirodoznanstvenim područji­ ma. O Matiji Antunu Relkoviću kao prosvjetitelju na području stočarstva piše Vesna Vučevac Bajt, a s Josipom Kozarcem kao šumarom upoznaje nas Andrija Kristić. O ras­ koši šumske vegetacije u djelima Đure Rauša piše Joso Vukelić, a o srijemskim poduzet­ ništvima grofova Pejačevića i Pongraca saznajemo od Berislava Šebečića, vrsnog po­ znavatelja rudarstva. Svoja sjećanja na Vukovarca akademika Dragutina Fleša iznosi nam njegov školski kolega, također akademik Teodor Wikerhauser. Naše druženje u gradu Vukovaru završit ćemo u subotu, 17. listopada, okupljanjem na Spomen­obilježju Ovčara, Memorijalnom groblju Vukovar, Križu na Dunavu i raz gledanjem znamenitosti samoga herojskoga grad Vukovara i okolice. Kovaˇci´ca 1, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia [email protected] Pharmazie 66: 720–726 (2011) doi: 10.1691/ph.2011.1025 The aim of this article is to describe the foundation and development of the first distinct Institute of Phar- macognosy in the world and to provide a biography of its founder Julije Domac. The Institute was founded in 1896 as a separate institution at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time. In other European university centers, pharmacognosy institutes were founded together with pharmacology, botany, pharmaceutical or general chemistry. Julije Domac (1853–1928) graduated phar- macy from the University of Vienna (1874) and received his Ph.D. from the University of Graz (1880) with a paper elucidating the structure of hexene and mannitol obtained from manna. He lectured pharmacognosy at the University of Zagreb (1887–1924), wrote chemistry and pharmacognosy textbooks, and co-wrote the Croatian-Slavonian Pharmacopoeia. 1. [email protected] Pharmazie 67: 652–657 (2012) doi: 10.1691/ph.2012.1140 The second edition of the Croato-Slavonian Pharmacopoeia was published in Zagreb in 1901. As the origi- nal scientific work of two university professors, Gustav Janecekˇ and Julije Domac, the Pharmacopoeia had strong scientific foundations and introduced a number of innovations. For the first time, a pharmacopoeia prescribed optical rotation for the examination of essential oils, introduced the quantitative analysis of active ingredients in galenic preparations, standardized the boiling points at the atmospheric pressure of 760 mm Hg, and was the only one to prescribe antidotes for herbal drugs and preparations which may cause poi- soning. It received extremely positive reviews from the most prominent European pharmaceutical experts. It was written in two languages, Latin and Croatian, and had a wider significance, since it reflected the aspirations of the Croatian people for independence. 1. First recognition of Mendeleev's work can be seen in the Croatian chemical community through the act of Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts which elected Mendeleev as an honorary member (1882). Julije Domac, a pharmacist, a chemist and university professor of pharmacognosy at Zagreb University published his textbook The Inorganic Chemistry for Senior Real-High School Classes (Zagreb, 1901) which is the first textbook written in Croatian language that includes the periodic system table. Gustav Janeček, professor of chemistry at Zagreb University, deserves the most credit for accepting and promoting the periodic system within Croatian chemistry. First university textbook of chemistry in Croatia Chemistry I, General, (Zagreb, 1919), written by Janeček, also includes the periodic table. Croatian scientific community accepted and understood the significance of the Mendeleev's periodic system of elements. Kovaˇci´ca 1, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia [email protected] Pharmazie 66: 720–726 (2011) doi: 10.1691/ph.2011.1025 The aim of this article is to describe the foundation and development of the first distinct Institute of Phar- macognosy in the world and to provide a biography of its founder Julije Domac. The Institute was founded in 1896 as a separate institution at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time. In other European university centers, pharmacognosy institutes were founded together with pharmacology, botany, pharmaceutical or general chemistry. Julije Domac (1853–1928) graduated phar- macy from the University of Vienna (1874) and received his Ph.D. from the University of Graz (1880) with a paper elucidating the structure of hexene and mannitol obtained from manna. He lectured pharmacognosy at the University of Zagreb (1887–1924), wrote chemistry and pharmacognosy textbooks, and co-wrote the Croatian-Slavonian Pharmacopoeia. 1.
