The utilization of bioresources by local communities at Giam Siak Kecil-Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve, Riau Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 17: 873-886. This study aims to assess the use of bioresources of Giam Siak Kecil Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve by the local community. The use of bioresources was characterized by the level of utilization of bioresources in the household economy. It classified into five groups; (i) subsistence group (SG), (ii) supplementary group (SpG), (iii) integrated group (IG), (iv) specialized extraction group (SEG), and (v) specialized cultivation group (SCG). The results showed that the local community used bioresources as main source of livelihood at the core zone and buffer zone. There are 36 species of fish, 17 species of non-timber, and 28 species of timber used by local community. Core area and buffer zone are dominated by SEG and SCG. In the core area, the relationship between SEG non-timber and timber is very significant. -

Two survey conducted in Ulu Belayan river streams, Mahakam river drainage, District Kembang Janggut, Regency Kutai Timur, Province East Kalimantan. This third survey studied the freshwater fish diversity around Mesangat watershed, District Muara Ancalong, Regency Kutai Kartanegara, Province Kalimantan Timur. There is a quite big swampy area in the District Muara Ancalong, Mesangat swamp or in Bahasa Indonesia we call it Rawa Mesangat. This swamp area is the habitat of the protected species of long snout crocodile, Tomistoma schlegeli. The aim of this survey is to get the information of the fish diversity around Mesangat watershed, the distribution of each site and the status of the species. The results of this survey could be use as the basic data for REA KON to manage the area for the continuation and conservation of the species. -

Abstract The population structure and genetic diversities of Clarias gariepinus from the cultured population at Chi Farm (Ajanla) and wild population at Asejire Reservoir (Asejire) were analysed using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Microsatellite DNA markers. Using a CTAB protocol, genomic DNA was extracted from the caudal fins of 20 samples of live specimen collected from each population. Seven RAPD primers and seven pairs of microsatellite DNA primers were used to amplify different loci on the extracted genomic DNA by Polymerase Chain Reaction and the resultant DNA fragments were analysed on agarose gel. The RAPD primers amplified a total of 474 loci with 697 bands in all samples for the seven primers studied. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Clarias gracilentus, a new Southeast Asian walking catfish species, is described from Phu Quoc Island (Vietnam) off the coast of southeastern Cambodia and from mainland southeastern Cambodia. The new species is a member of the C. nieuhofii species complex, and can be distinguished from congeners in the complex in having a combination of: head width 11.9–12.9% SL, distance between the occipital process and the base of the first dorsal-fin ray 5.3–8.4% SL, pecto- ral-fin length 8.5–10.1% SL, body depth at anus 8.2–11.7% SL, pelvic-fin length 4.3–5.5% SL, length of anal-fin base 60.0–63.9% SL, eye diameter 5.4–7.2% HL, interorbital distance 42.7–48.0% HL, occipital-process length 7.8–14.7% HL, 96–101 dorsal-fin rays, 84–89 anal-fin rays and 80–84 total vertebrae. 1342 ARTICLE Seasonal hydrology shifts production sources supporting fishes in rivers of the Lower Mekong Basin Chouly Ou and Kirk O. Winemiller Abstract: Seasonal hydrology is assumed to be an important reason why the Lower Mekong Basin supports highly productive and biodiverse inland fisheries. We used C and N stable isotope ratios of tissue samples to estimate primary production sources supporting fish biomass in the Mekong and three large tributaries in Cambodia. We used a Bayesian mixing model to estimate relative contributions of four alternative production sources — seston, benthic algae, riparian grasses, and riparian macro- phytes. There was little seasonal variation in isotopic signatures of riparian plants, but benthic algae and seston showed large seasonal shifts in carbon ratios. Seston and benthic algae were the most important production sources supporting fish biomass overall during the dry season, and riparian vegetation was the most important source during the wet season. Sources contributed differentially to biomass of trophic and habitat guilds, especially during the dry season. A dam on the upper Sesan River has changed hydrology, channel geomorphology, and other factors and, compared with the other three rivers, its fish biomass appears to derive from algae to a greater extent. Nous avons utilisé les rapports d’isotopes stables du C et du N d’échantillons de tissus pour estimer les sources de production primaire qui supportent la biomasse de poissons dans le Mékong et trois grands affluents au Cambodge. -

The limnological habitats are receptors of pollution, thus local fish species richness is a plausible biological indicator to reflect the quality of a particular water body. However, database on species occurrence that corresponds with the water physico-chemistry constituents is often not available. The problem is compounded by the lack of species identification description to assist those working on river and freshwater resource conservation projects. This paper attempts to fill the gaps in the context of Kampar River drainage. Based on sampling exercises conducted from October 2015 to March 2017, an annotated list with visual data for 56 species belonging to 44 genera and 23 families is presented. The water physico-chemistry data is also summarized with the corresponding visual data of limnological zones studied. The species diversity results are further compared with other local drainages and the correlation between area size and their relationship is expressed by y = 17.627e0.0601x. -
