“Brandon Ezell and Jonathan Lenard are a couple of guys that I bonded with really quick,” Toussaint said. “Maurice McK- night, before he graduated, was another person I bonded with quickly. Maurice was the first person I met when I moved out here. He was my host during my visit and he took me under his wing, because he’s a safety and I’m a cornerback and he knew all the plays. I was like his little brother and he looked after me. I always went over to his house to watch film, play games and things like that.”

As for his actual brother, he, along with several other mem- bers of his family and friends will finally get to see John play college football for the first time in just a few short weeks.

“They will for sure be at our last home game (against Neva- da on November 17) for senior day,” Toussaint said. “My brother, uncle, sister, sister-in-law, my friends – they are all coming out here for that.”

What his family and friends will see on the field that day is a player that has overcome every obstacle thrown his way since he was just a little boy living a tough life in Miami. At the end of the day, that’s just what Toussaint wants people to remember about him when his football career is said and done. Holmes drives a defender to his knees and leaps into the air for a Spartan pass reception and a first down. “I want people to remember just how I went about every- thing, from the JUCO struggle and not giving up and continu- ing to fight,” Toussaint said. “My brother put it in my head to not (HOLMES continued from page 45) give up; never give up. I want to look back on how I just never gave up and kept balling no matter how hard things got. When A communications studies major, Holmes will graduate things got really bad for me, I never looked back and always this December and then has choices about what we wants to kept moving forward and battling to achieve my dream.” do.

“I would love to continue playing after this season. My major gives me a lot of options for what I want to do after graduation, but I have been applying to police departments. I would like to be on the SWAT team as that is as close to going to battle without going in the military. The have to have tight-knit connection with everyone on your team, similar to football. Every member has to depend on someone else to do the job.”

Jaylin even has an opinion about his dad’s play on the field. When asked about his daddy, Jaylin thought for a second, got the biggest smile on his face and tried to tell the story with his arms flailing around like he was trying to swim. While he may not remember his dad playing on the CEFCU field, Jaylin’s love and excitement for his daddy cannot be contained.

John Toussaint moved to a starting roll this fall.
