Wheat gluten proteins were assessed for the 6 presence of opioid peptides on the basis of tyrosine and proline within their sequence. Eleven 7 peptides were identified and occurrence of predicted sequences or their structural motifs were 8 analysed using BIOPEP database and ranked using PeptideRanker. Based on higher peptide 9 ranking, three sequences YPG, YYPG and YIPP were selected for determination of opioid 10 activity by cAMP assay against µ and κ opioid receptors. Three peptides inhibited the 11 production of cAMP to varied degree with EC50 values of YPG, YYPG and YIPP were 5.3 12 mM, 1.5 mM and 2.9 mM for µ-opioid receptor, and 1.9 mM, 1.2 mM and 3.2 mM for κ- 13 opioid receptor, respectively. -

HIV and Substance Use October 2016 Fast Facts • Alcohol and other drugs can affect a person’s judgment and increase risk of getting or transmitting HIV. • In people living with HIV, substance use can worsen the overall consequences of HIV. • Social and structural factors make it difficult to prevent HIV among people who use substances. Substance use disorders, which are problematic patterns of using alcohol or another substance, such as crack cocaine, methamphetamine (“meth”), amyl nitrite (“poppers”), prescription opioids, and heroin, are closely associated with HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Injection drug use (IDU) can be a direct route of HIV transmission if people share needles, syringes, or other injection materials that are contaminated with HIV. However, drinking alcohol and ingesting, smoking, or inhaling drugs are also associated with increased risk for HIV. These substances alter judgment, which can lead to risky sexual behaviors (e.g., having sex without a condom, having multiple partners) that can make people more likely to get and transmit HIV. In people living with HIV, substance use can hasten disease progression, affect adherence to antiretroviral therapy (HIV medicine), and worsen the overall consequences of HIV. Commonly Used Substances and HIV Risk • Alcohol. Excessive alcohol consumption, notably binge drinking, can be an important risk factor for HIV because it is linked to risky sexual behaviors and, among people living with HIV, can hurt treatment outcomes. • Opioids. Opioids, a class of drugs that reduce pain, include both prescription drugs and heroin. They are associated with HIV risk behaviors such as needle sharing when injected and risky sex, and have been linked to a recent HIV outbreak. -

THE ADDIS SEDIMENT COUNT IN NORMAL CHILDREN By JOHN D. LYTTLE (From the Babies Hospit and the Department of Pediatrics, Colege of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York City) (Received for publication August 9, 1932) THE METHOD In 1925 Addis (1) described a method by which, in a concentrated acid urine, the rate of excretion of protein, casts and red and white cells could be determined. His method, with certain modifications, has been followed here. All of the counts were made on the 12 hour night specimen from 7 or 8 P.M. to 7 or 8 A.M. Addis recommended that fluids be restricted during, and for 12 hours preceding the collection, since in dilute and alkaline urine hyaline casts dissolve and red cells may be completely lysed. With children this rigid restriction of fluid proved impossible. Withholding fluid during the afternoon and night except for 200 cc. at the evening meal, gave urines of such concentration and acidity that they were suitable for a count. Most children had an early supper and col- lections were started at 7 or 8 P.M. Under these conditions, the urinary pH was between 5.0 and 6.0 and the specific gravity usually well above 1.020. The specimens were treated as described by Addis: "the con- centrated night urine is thoroughly mixed by repeated inversion of the rubber-stoppered bottle and a 10 cc. sample is transferred to a special graduated tube, and centrifugalized for five minutes at 1,800 revolutions per minute. The supernatant urine is decanted and pipetted down to a known volume which varies with the amount of sediment as judged by direct observation. -

It is used for the treatment of pain and heroin addiction. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate sublin- gual delivery systems containing ThH. Dimethyl-β-cyclodextrin (DM-β-CD) can enhance the solubility and permeability of hydrophobic drugs. In this paper, ThH cyclodextrin inclusion complexes were prepared and administrated sublingually with the objective of improving the drug’s aqueous solubility, in vitro permeation rate, and in vivo absorption rate. The formulation was prepared with DM-β-CD using the freeze-dried meth- od and characterized using phase solubility, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray and NMR analy- ses. The results of each test indicated the formation of dynamic inclusion complexes between ThH and DM- β-CD. The inclusion complexes also showed significant increases in in vitro aqueous solubility and mucosal permeability. According to the pharmacokinetic study of the complex in rats, the AUC and Cmax values of the sublingual delivery group were 40 and 46 times higher than those of the gastrointestinal group, whereas tmax was shorter, which proved that in vivo absorption and metabolism had been improved. -

This bibliography includes selected articles from the 1,075 found by searching during May, 2008, which represent key findings in the study of opioids. Articles for which there is no abstract are excluded. Also case reports and initial clinical trial reports are excluded. This is a compendium of all articles and do not lead to a specific target.
