This project is based on an analysis of newspaper articles published by William Lyon Mackenzie and his contemporaries, diplomatic cables between Washington D.C. and London, letters, and accounts of celebrations, toasts, and public meetings which occurred between 1837 and 1842. I argue Americans and Upper Canadians in the Great Lakes region made up a culture area. By re-engaging in a battle with the British, Upper Canadians, and their American supporters sought redemption. Reacting to geographic isolation from major metropolitan areas and a looming psychic crisis motivated many of these individuals to act.

    From Quaker to Upper Canadian: The Boundaries of Community Identity among Yonge Street Friends, 1801-18501 ROBYNNE ROGERS HEALEY In the spring of 1801, when Timothy Rogers arrived in Upper Canada with twenty Quaker families from Vermont to begin a settlement on Yonge Street, he envisioned the unification of Upper Canadian Quakers and the establish- ment of a stable, thriving faith community based on the fundamental Quaker principles of peace, equality and simplicity. Immediately, his settlers were followed by a similar number of Quaker families from Pennsylvania led by Samuel Lundy. Together, these members of the Society of Friends joined forces to create a strong faith community in the backwoods of Upper Canada.2 This settlement of Friends did not attract a great deal of attention. It was well-removed from other settlements and Quakers were not a troublesome bunch. The colonial government was pleased to have them along Yonge Street. They were hardworking and diligently fulfilled their settlement duties. As plain folk they kept to themselves; in fact, they purposefully set themselves apart from the general population. They were proud to be a “peculiar people.” The Yonge Street settlement, which quickly grew to be the largest community of Friends in Upper Canada, was an extension of the eighteenth- century Quaker retreat from mainstream society. Those who settled in the Yonge Street area established a community where they could live out the tenets of their faith relatively free from the laws of the larger society with which their testimonies often disagreed.     Mackenzie Rebellion – 1837 & 1838 In the wake of an electoral defeat, William Lyon Mackenzie (1795-1861) founded a new newspaper, the Colonial Advocate, which symbolically had its first issue printed on July 4, 1836. In the pages of the Colonial Advocate, Mackenzie began advocating constitutional change for Upper Canada. He now believed that all of the colony's minor grievances could only be rectified through wholesale constitutional reform. In spring 1837, Lord John Russell, the British Whig politician who was then Leader of the House of Commons (the prime minister was then Viscount Melbourne), authored his "Ten Resolutions" on Upper and Lower Canada. The Resolutions removed the few means that the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada had to control the Executive Council. The Ten Resolutions were the final straw for Mackenzie, and he now advocated severing Upper Canada's link to Great Britain and recommended armed resistance to the British oppression. Mackenzie spent summer 1837 organizing vigilance and political unions throughout Upper Canada and holding large Reform meetings in the Home District. These meetings passed resolutions indicating grave concern over how the colony was being governed and called for a convention with delegates from both Upper and Lower Canada to discuss the situation. Moving into fall 1837, Mackenzie attracted large crowds, but also began facing physical attacks from members of the Orange Order. It was during this period that Mackenzie determined that violent rebellion would be necessary. In early October, Sir John Colborne, who was now the acting Governor General of British North America, asked Lieutenant Governor Bond Head to despatch troops to Lower Canada, where the tensions which would lead to the outbreak of the Lower Canada Rebellion in November under the leadership of Louis-Joseph Papineau were high.

The subject is one in which the author has maintained a con- stant and devoted interest. Its preparation is a contribution to the annals of the people called "Quakers," who settled in York County in the early days of the last century, (1800-1840). The author had not anticipated the great interest which has been -manifested in the subject. So much discussion, reminiscence and interest have been aroused that it has been decided to pub- lish it in a more permanent form. This is done in the hope that it will create a new and deeper interest in the Friends, their lives and principles. That will be an ample reward to both the author and publisher. The part taken by the Friends in the pioneer settlements and their influence in the affairs of state, society and religious life is worthy of being known by all. The appendix compiled by the publisher is a concise, though incomplete, chronology that will ibe of interest and value to those whose wish it is to know more of the Religious Society of Friends, and it is hoped that it will stimulate an earnestness in the deeper study of the history of the Quakers and their beliefs.
