E. B. Du Bois and the Vision of Africa’s Past Tracey Lynn Thompson Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2011 Abstract Scholars have examined many aspects of W. E. B. Du Bois’s project of empowering oppressed peoples in the United States and around the world. However they have treated in only a fragmentary way one of the principal strategies that he used to counter hegemonic ideologies of African and African American inferiority. That strategy was to turn to the evidence of history. Here I argue that Du Bois, alerted by Franz Boas to Africans’ historical attainments, confronted claims made by European Americans that Africans and a fortiori African Americans lacked any achievement independent of European or other foreign influence. Du Bois linked African Americans to Africa and laid out repeatedly and in detail a narrative of autonomous African historical accomplishment. I demonstrate that his approach to the history of Africa constituted a radical departure from the treatment of Africa presented by scholars located in the mainstream of contemporary anglophone academic thought. I argue that while his vision of Africa’s history did not effect any significant shift in scholarly orthodoxy, it played a crucial role, at a grave juncture in race relations in the United States, in helping to equip young African Americans with the psychological resources necessary to challenge white supremacist systems. -

Computer-Supported Cooperative Work: Historv and Focus d Jonathan Grudin, University of California, Irvine en years ago, hen Greif of MIT and Paul Cashman of Digital Equipment Corporation organized a workshop that had far-reaching effects. Twenty people from different fields -but with a shared interest in how people work -gathered to explore technology’s role in the work environment and coined the term “computer-supported cooperative work” to describe it. Since then, thousands of researchers and developers have responded to this ini- tiative. Although the first CSCW conferences were held in the United States, the topic was picked up immediately in Europe and Asia, where related work and seri- ous interest already existed. This article describes the people and the work found under the CSCW umbrella. Why i984? An earlier approach to group support, called “office automation,” had run out of steam by 1984. OA’s primary problem was not technical, although technical chal- lenges certainly existed; it was in understanding system requirements. In the mid- CSCW and groupware 1960s, tasks such as filling seats on airplane flights or printing payroll checks had emerged in the 1980s been translated into requirements that resulted (with some trial and error) in suc- cessful mainframe systems. In the mid-l970s, minicomputers promised to support from shared interests groups and organizations in more sophisticated, interactive ways, and OA was born. OA tried to extend and integrate single-user applications, such as word processors and among product spreadsheets, to support groups and departments. Indeed cell phones are now such a commodity, that some fashionable Chinese women wear them as jewelry, on chains around their necks. One young professional I interviewed joked that China is now in a new age, the age of the thumb [muzhi shi dai]. She was referring not only to the remarkable text message traffic in China —an estimated 100 million messages per day for the more than 340 mil- lion cell phone subscribers in that country—but also to the growing sense that mobile technology is ushering in a new era in Chinese histo- ry and culture, as well as a new place for China on the world technolo- gy stage. -

I think we all know Genevieve well, but she is ... Just to remind you, she's the director of the Autonomy Agency and Assurance Institute, the 3A Institute. She's the Florence Violet McKenzie Chair and distinguished professor at the Australian National University, and a Vice President and senior fellow at Intel Corporation. Dr Hartley: The 3A Institute has the mission of building a new applied science around the management of artificial intelligence, data technology, and their impact on humanity. So it's really appropriate that we have someone of immense skills in those areas tonight. Genevieve is ideally placed to lead that work. She's a cultural anthropologist, a technologist and futurist, and best known for her work at the intersection of cultural practice and technology development. Dr Hartley: I'm sure in [inaudible 00:01:05] of the public, what is highly acclaimed Boyer lectures for 2017, which was really fascinating. And she's investigated what some means to be human and Australian in a digital world. Just because that's not enough to fill her day, she's also the Non-Executive Director of the Commonwealth Bank where she has literally left that meeting after three days of board meetings to come here tonight. Dr Hartley: She's a member, as the minister said, of the Prime Minister's National Science and Technology Council and we are very proud to say she's a fellow of this academy. -

More Than Writing Text: Multiplicity in Collaborative Academic Writing Ida Larsen-Ledet Ph.D. Thesis Department of Computer Science Aarhus University Denmark More Than Writing Text: Multiplicity in Collaborative Academic Writing A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Aarhus University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Ph.D. Degree. by Ida Larsen-Ledet November 2, 2020 Abstract This thesis explores collaborative academic writing with a focus on how it is medi- ated by multiple technologies. The thesis presents findings from two empirical stud- ies with university students and researchers: The first combined semi-structured interviews with visualizations of document editing activity to explore transitions through co-writers’ artifact ecologies along with co-writers’ motivations for per- forming these transitions. The second study was a three-stage co-design workshop series that progressed from dialog through ideation to exploration of a prototype for a shared editor that was based on the participants’ proposed features and designs. The contribution from the second study to this thesis is the analysis of participants’ viewpoints and ideas. The analyses of these findings contribute a characterization of co-writers’ practical and social motivations for using multiple tools in their collaborations, and the chal- lenges this poses for sharing and adressing the work. Multiplicity is also addressed in terms of co-writers bringing multiple and diverse needs and preferences into the writing, and how these may be approached in efforts to design and improve support for collaborative writing. Additionally, the notion of text function is introduced to describe the text’s role as a mediator of the writing.
