Other Contributions NATURE NOTES Amphibia: Caudata Ambystoma ordinarium. Predation by a Black-necked Gartersnake (Thamnophis cyrtopsis). The Michoacán Stream Salamander (Ambystoma ordinarium) is a facultatively paedomorphic ambystomatid species. Paedomorphic adults and larvae are found in montane streams, while metamorphic adults are terrestrial, remaining near natal streams (Ruiz-Martínez et al., 2014). Streams inhabited by this species are immersed in pine, pine-oak, and fir for- ests in the central part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (Luna-Vega et al., 2007). All known localities where A. ordinarium has been recorded are situated between the vicinity of Lake Patzcuaro in the north-central portion of the state of Michoacan and Tianguistenco in the western part of the state of México (Ruiz-Martínez et al., 2014). This species is considered Endangered by the IUCN (IUCN, 2015), is protected by the government of Mexico, under the category Pr (special protection) (AmphibiaWeb; accessed 1April 2016), and Wilson et al. (2013) scored it at the upper end of the medium vulnerability level. Data available on the life history and biology of A. ordinarium is restricted to the species description (Taylor, 1940), distribution (Shaffer, 1984; Anderson and Worthington, 1971), diet composition (Alvarado-Díaz et al., 2002), phylogeny (Weisrock et al., 2006) and the effect of habitat quality on diet diversity (Ruiz-Martínez et al., 2014). We did not find predation records on this species in the literature, and in this note we present information on a predation attack on an adult neotenic A. ordinarium by a Thamnophis cyrtopsis. Ratsnakes generally preferred habitats with greater canopy heterogeneity early in the active season, and greater temperature heterogeneity later in the season. This sea- sonal shift potentially reflects differences in resource requirements and thermoregula- tion behavior. -

HIS AND TNEWS AND INFORMATION FROM THE SOUTHEASTL LAND TRUST OF NEW HAMPSHIRE Managing Forests for Today and Tomorrow by Pete Ingraham The 30-acre Ahl Memorial Forest in Kingston – donated to the Southeast Land Trust in 2006 – is a classic mix of pine, oak, and hemlock forest dotted with swamps and vernal pools. A few small ridges run through the otherwise flat property, probably created by retreating glaciers 12,000 years ago. Stone walls cross here and there – remnants of 19th century pastureland now reclaimed by the forest. It’s the sort of southeast New Hampshire woods you see everywhere… except for the paint. This past January, blue slashes, dots, and arrows on some trees (which will eventually fade) marked this as the Land Trust’s first timber harvest. This was one part of a comprehensive management strategy set by the Land Trust that will enhance wildlife habitat, promote forest health, and provide native and renewable timber to local markets while protecting wetlands and water quality. Common Species on District Lands The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) manages water resources in the west- central portion of Florida according to legislative mandates. The District uses public land acquisition funds to protect key lands for water resources. The natural communities, plants and animals on these lands also benefi t from a level of protection that can be experienced and enjoyed through recreational opportunities made available on District lands. Every year, approximately 2.5 million people visit the more than 436,000 acres of public conservation lands acquired by the District and its partners. The lands are open to the public for activities such as hiking, bicycling, hunting, horseback riding, fi shing, camping, picnicking and studying nature. The District provides these recreational opportunities so that residents may experience healthy natural communities. An array of natural landscapes is available from the meandering Outstanding Florida Southwest Florida Water Management District Waters riverine systems, the cypress domes and strands, swamps and hammocks, to the scrub, sandhill, and pine fl atwoods.
