This book is a joy. When being a rock star doesn't work out, he tries his hand at being a member of the music press. A final sign of the overall warmness of the book. The description of how his parents, who had survived World War 2 and now couldn't understand their children's love of the "loutish" Kinks let alone the "weird looking" Frank Zappa, reminded me a little of reading my Dad's memoir about growing up in the s. Some of the tales are well worn, some brand new to me at least, but all of them are told with Ellen's trademark easy charm. Starting with a near life threatening encounter with Elvis Costello for Record Mirror, he moves on to NME in the Tony Parsons, Julie Birchall era where his uncynical enthusiasm seems somewhat at odds with the prevailing mood, although he does find a kindred eclectic spirit in the afore mentioned Baker. I wore out my home recorded video of Live Aid and could probably recite all the words in interviews and links. The author has managed to laugh both himself, and at the business he has spent his life working in, yet also convey his immense fondness and affection for the music which has provided the soundtrack of our lives — including his own. The book is packed with funny anecdotes about various musicians he's met over the years and all their various idiosyncratic behaviours. As a lover of music, let me thank Mark Ellen for his contribution to the music business. Mark Ellen's memoir should be perfect for me and I suppose it is, but I got into music ten years after Ellen so I found the early seventies chapters a little slow hence the loss of one star in this review but as soon as the author starts working for the NME the book really takes off.

For the published version please visit https://academic.oup.com/ml/article- abstract/92/4/607/1141626 Authorship and the popular song Within the broad field of musicology and music criticism the author as creative originator and authority remains a central figure. Whether a critic is concerned with the canonical greats of Western art music or an emerging canon of popular musicians; whether a scholar’s focus is critical, formally analytical or biographical - repertoire is located within a clear framework of assumptions about the individual authorial self. An obvious response might be; why not? There are usually objectively identifiable individuals, collaborators or groups of people that are legally recognised, economically rewarded and socially recognised as the creators of a musical work (whether a song, a string quartet or film soundtrack). In addition, there is considerable evidence to suggest that music listeners interpret and understand songs or symphonies as motivated, authored and intentionally created – not necessarily in a mystical or magical manner, but according to the techniques and mechanisms of composition that are routinely discussed within and presented by the press and broadcast media, along with information about musical activities acquired over the internet.
