So, how can you help? • If you have enough horological items to sell and are able to get to the Hall, you could hire a table. If not, perhaps you know someone, such as a collector or dealer, who would like to have a table. Anything to do with clocks and watches, tools, equipment, books etc., old and new. We are expecting to have up to 50 tables available. • If you live within easy distance and you can’t get to the fair, maybe you have something you would like to sell? You can drop it at Upton Hall with a clear note Figure 1. of the price you want and the price you would accept. We will try and sell it for you and take 10% for the BHI. Perhaps you could leave a number as well so that if we got a decent offer we could call you to check we can sell. • Are you prepared to act as a steward for all or part of the event? We will need people to carry out several different roles from being on the door, collecting the door fee and issuing tickets, walking the floor ensuring the sellers and buyers are happy and safe, directing customers to the people you think can help them the best with queries, running the table containing members’ items and last, but not least, providing tea and coffee throughout the fair. She had been asked to sort out various papers from the estate of R. M. Clarkson, formerly Research Director at the de Havilland Aircraft Company which was based in Hatfield for many years. Amongst the papers was a set of photographs of the Moon taken by Clarkson’s uncle - C.C. Walker CBE - when he was a young man. Miss Ewens had watched the University of Hertfordshire team battling to the quarter finals of University Challenge and had noticed two members of the team were studying astrophysics. Deducing that astronomy must be an important subject in the University, she wondered if a donation of the pictures would be welcome and got in touch. The photographs had been printed with rather atmospheric vignettes and as Miss Ewens withdrew each century-old image from the reinforced envelope in which they had been stored, we enjoyed glimpses of the challenge and excitement that must have accompanied early lunar photography.

    1 L’EPEE 1839 – the premier clock manufacture in Switzerland For over 175 years, L'Epée has been at the forefront of watch and clock making. Today, it is the only specialised manufacture in Switzerland dedicated to making high-end clocks. L'Epée was founded in 1839, initially to make music box and watch components, by Auguste L’Epée who set up the business near Besançon, France. The L’Epée hallmark was that all parts were made entirely by hand. From 1850 onwards, the manufacture became a leading light in the production of ‘platform’ escapements, creating regulators especially for alarm clocks, table clocks and musical watches. By 1877, it was making 24,000 platform escapements annually. The manufacture became a well-known specialist owning a large number of patents on special escapements such as anti-knocking, auto-starting and constant-force escapements and the chief supplier of escapements to several celebrated watchmakers of the day. L'Epée has won a number of gold awards at International Exhibitions. During the 20th century, L'Epée owed much of its reputation to its superlative carriage clocks and, for many, L'Epée was the clock of the influential and powerful; it was also the gift of choice by French government officials to elite guests. In 1976 when the Concorde supersonic aircraft entered commercial service, L'Epée wall clocks were chosen to furnish the cabins, providing passengers with visual feedback of the time. In 1994, L'Epée showed its thirst for a challenge when it built the world's biggest clock with compensated pendulum, the Giant Regulator.

The information contained in this research seeks to solve some of these and has recently unearthed some interesting and informative old documents, copies of which are referred to in this document and can be found in the Appendices. Design St Paul’s Church Woodhouse Eaves and St Peter’s Copt Oak were two of many of the churches designed by architect William Railton. For these two local churches he used the same design as can be seen at the bottom of original sketch ‘Design of the churches at Woodhouse Eaves and Copt Oak of Charnwood Forest Leicestershire’ [Figure 1] and were built about the same time in 1836/7. However St Paul’s has undergone many alterations over the years, including the installation of the clock and two clock faces. St Peter at Copt Oak [Figure 2] remains today with no clock installed and with the original ‘window’, hood moulds and foliage label stops, which can be seen clearly over the front door and triple lancet bell openings on each face with parapet and pinnacles.
