XI: Las Vegas’s El Rancho Vegas Another great hotel...and one most people have at least heard of....Thomas E. Hull, a hotelier who had built eight hotels including El Rancho Sacramento and El Rancho Fresno in California, built the El Rancho outside the city limits of Las Vegas, introducing a major element to the development of the Las Vegas style - the theme resort. On April 3, 1941, the $425,000, western themed El Rancho Vegas opened on 66 acres, as the first hotel casino resort on what would become the Las Vegas Strip. Ten gardeners worked the year round keeping up the grounds. El Rancho took as much as 10 million gallons of water a month in the dry summer periods. A neon-lit windmill sat atop the casino for all to see. The El Rancho provided badminton courts, dinner dancing, and an outdoor barbecue serving the terrace. In the 1940s, El Rancho's Chuck Wagon Buffet had seating for 250 people and was the largest in town. The Entertainment that appeared at the El Rancho in the 1940s included Pearl Bailey, Earnie Baron, and world famous clown Grok. Major names continued to appear at the hotel through the 1950s. On June 17, 1960, a fire burned the El Rancho to the ground. All that was left of the central building after more than two hours of burning was a charred shell. Damage was estimated at $5,000,000. The building was constructed of wood in the frontier theme that was Hull's dream. In July of 1960, the owner, Katleman, had promised that he would replace the existing resort with an ultra-modern concrete building. but Katleman's dream was never built. .

Las Vegas was a railroad town, built to house the railroad workers and their families. The clubs, casinos, stores, schools, hotels, professional offices, and railroad station were all downtown. Highway 91 (now the Strip) went from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, passing through Las Vegas. Scattered along the highway, leading into Las Vegas, were some small clubs, but they were few and far between. his new hotel. When the Comstock Lode was discovered near Virginia City in 1859 hundreds of prospectors, entrepreneurs, and adventurists crossed the Sierra Nevada and came to Nevada seeking their fortune. They brought with them a gambling culture. In 1861, the Nevada Territory was created, and Abraham Lincoln appointed James Nye as the Territorial Governor. I claim that behind the Strip’s “reinventions” lies a process of symbolic destruction. Since resorts distinguish themselves symbolically, each new round of capital accumulation relies on the destruction of symbolic capital of existing resorts. A new resort either ups the language within a paradigm, or causes a paradigm shift, which devalues the previous resorts even further. This is why, in the context of the Strip, buildings have such a short lifespan. This dissertation is chronologically structured around the four building booms of new resort construction that occurred on the Strip. Historically, there are periodic waves of new casino resort constructions with continuous upgrades and renovation projects in between. They have been successively theorized as suburbanization, corporatization, Disneyfication, and global branding. Each building boom either conforms to a single paradigm or witnesses a paradigm shift halfway: these paradigms have been theorized as Wild West, Los Angeles Cool, Pop City, Corporate Modern, Disneyland, Sim City, and Starchitecture.

Working from the assumption that the men and women who operated and vacationed in Strip casinos were “more or less rational people acting to maximize their profit,” Schwartz examines the conditions that led to the first flowering of the casino industry outside of Las Vegas in the late 1940s and explains how a variety of factors aided the growth of the Strip through the 1990s. When other states tried to use casinos to provide economic stimuli, however, they often ignored the fact that casino resorts were specific adaptations to the conditions of a suburban strip in an isolated city, and not blueprints for urban redevelopment.
