THE MAJOR SCHOOLS OF TIBETAN BUDDHISM By Pema Khandro A BIRD’S EYE VIEW 1. NYINGMA LINEAGE a. Pema Khandro’s lineage. Literally means: ancient school or old school. Nyingmapas rely on the old tantras or the original interpretation of Tantra as it was given from Padmasambhava. b. Founded in 8th century by Padmasambhava, an Indian Yogi who synthesized the teachings of the Indian MahaSiddhas, the Buddhist Tantras, and Dzogchen. He gave this teaching (known as Vajrayana) in Tibet. c. Systemizes Buddhist philosophy and practice into 9 Yanas. The Inner Tantras (what Pema Khandro Rinpoche teaches primarily) are the last three. d. It is not a centralized hierarchy like the Sarma (new translation schools), which have a figure head similar to the Pope. Instead, the Nyingma tradition is de-centralized, with every Lama is the head of their own sangha. There are many different lineages within the Nyingma. e. A major characteristic of the Nyingma tradition is the emphasis in the Tibetan Yogi tradition – the Ngakpa tradition. However, once the Sarma translations set the tone for monasticism in Tibet, the Nyingmas also developed a monastic and institutionalized segment of the tradition. But many Nyingmas are Ngakpas or non-monastic practitioners. f. A major characteristic of the Nyingma tradition is that it is characterized by treasure revelations (gterma). These are visionary revelations of updated communications of the Vajrayana teachings. Ultimately treasure revelations are the same dharma principles but spoken in new ways, at new times and new places to new people. Because of these each treasure tradition is unique, this is the major reason behind the diversity within the Nyingma. -

The Tibetan Book of the Dead: Its History and Controversial Aspects of its Contents Michael Nahm, Ph.D. Freiburg, Germany ABSTRACT: In recent decades, the Tibetan Book of the Dead (TBD) has attracted much attention from Westerners interested in Eastern spirituality and has been discussed in the literature on dying and near-death experiences. However, the history of the TBD has practically been ignored in that literature up to now. This history has been elaborated in detail by Tibetologist Bryan Cuevas (2003). To bring this history to the attention of scholars in the field of near-death studies, I present in this paper a summary of the TBD’s development based primarily on the work of Cuevas (2003). The summary shows that the TBD was gradually elaborated within a specific Tibetan Buddhist context, the Dzokchen tradition. In comparing features of first-hand reports of the death and dying process as reported in the TBD with those reported in four other categories—Tibetan délok, near-death experiencers, mediums, and children who remember previous lives— I find that some features are consistent but that other key features are not. Be- cause it seems likely that inconsistent features of the TBD reflect idiosyncratic dying and afterlife concepts of the Dzokchen tradition, scholars in the field of near-death studies and others should be careful about adopting the contents of the TBD without question. Mingyur Rinpoche – Detailed Biography
MINGYUR RINPOCHE – DETAILED BIOGRAPHY Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche was born in 1975 in a small Himalayan village near the border of Nepal and Tibet. Son of the renowned meditation master Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, Mingyur Rinpoche was drawn to a life of contemplation from an early age and would often run away to meditate in the caves that surrounded his village. In these early childhood years, however, he suffered from debilitating panic attacks that crippled his ability to interact with others and enjoy his idyllic surroundings. At the age of nine, Rinpoche left to study meditation with his father at Nagi Gonpa, a small hermitage on the outskirts of Kathmandu valley. For nearly three years, Tulku Urgyen guided him experientially through the profound Buddhist practices of Mahamudra and Dzogchen, teachings that are typically considered highly secret and only taught to advanced meditators. Throughout this time, his father would impart pithy instructions to his young son and then send him to meditate until he had achieved a direct experience of the teachings. When he was eleven years old, Mingyur Rinpoche was requested to reside at Sherab Ling Monastery in Northern India, the seat of Tai Situ Rinpoche and one of the most important monasteries in the Kagyu lineage. While there, he studied the teachings that had been brought to Tibet by the great translator Marpa, as well as the rituals of the Karma Kagyu lineage, with the retreat master of the monastery, Lama Tsultrim. He was formally enthroned as the 7th incarnation of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche by Tai Situ Rinpoche when he was twelve years old. -

Biography of Kalu Rinpoche
Biography of Kalu Rinpoche Compiled by Hans Taeger Kalu Rinpoche was born in the district of Treshö Gang chi Rawa in the Hor region of Kham, Eastern Tibet, in 1905. This mountainous area, bordering on China, is known for the independent, rough and wild spirit of its people. His father, Karma Legshe Drayang, the thirteenth Ratak Palzang Tulku, was noted for his skill in the practice of medicine, as well as for literary accomplishments and mastery of Vajrayana meditation practice. He and his wife, Drolkar (White Tara) Chung Chung, Rinpoche's mother, were students of Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrö Taye, Jamyang Chentse Wangpo and the famous Mipham Rinpoche, all founders and leaders of the Rime Movement which revitalised the religious life of Tibet towards the end of the 19th Century by minimising the importance of sectarian differences and emphasising the common ground of the lineages and stressing the importance of meditation. Both husband and wife were devoted to practice, and immediately after their marriage undertook a religious retreat. They saw little of each other during this period, but one night together each dreamed that they were visited by the great meditation teacher and scholar, Jamgon Kongtrul, who announced that he was coming to stay with them and asked to be given a room. Not long afterwards Drolkar Chung Chung discovered she was pregnant. The dream had been auspicious; the pregnancy passed joyfully, without complications. Drolkar Chung Chung continued to work with her husband, and was gathering medicinal herbs with him one day when she realised the baby would soon be born. -

~ Padmasambhava and the Nyingma Lineage ~ Mingyur Rinpoche Guru Rinpoche brought the Dzogchen teachings to Tibet, as well as Vimalamitra. Vimalamitra was also Shri Singha's student. They each brought Dzogchen teachings to Tibet in different forms. And Guru Rinpoche had another student called “Vairotsana.” Vairotsana was a translator. He translated a lot of texts from Sanskrit to Tibetan. Guru Rinpoche sent him to India to also learn the general buddhadharma and Dzogchen. Vairotsana also learned a lot of Dzogchen. Vairotsana, Guru Rinpoche, and Vimalamitra — the three of them brought all the Dzogchen teachings from India to Tibet. And from there, the Dzogchen teachings continued until now as the unbroken lineage that came to Tibet. Mainly, Guru Rinpoche taught this to twenty-five students who were his main disciples. One of them was Vairotsana, and Vairotsana also continued to teach other students. And then Vimalamitra taught Dzogchen to Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo. Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo was a meditator who was very good at shamatha meditation. He did not know anything about vipashyana but was a very good shamatha meditator. He was one of the first teachers of the Tibetan king. later, he became Vimalamitra's student, and from there, Vimalamitra's Dzogchen teaching also continued. But in general, in Dzogchen, Guru Rinpoche, or Padmasambhava, is a really important lineage holder, especially in Tibet. Guru Rinpoche taught Dzogchen to many students in Tibet. And also, Guru Rinpoche put a lot of all these Dzogchen teachings into treasure form. Treasure is another lineage. There were twenty-five main disciples, another 108 disciples, and then thousands of disciples more of Guru Rinpoche. -

Chapter one provides a reception genealogy of the Tibetan guru/disciple relation in Western scholarship, followed by historical-anthropological descriptions of its practice reception in both Tibetan and Euro-North American formations. -
The Dzogchen Path ~
~ The Dzogchen Path ~ Mingyur Rinpoche Dzogchen is called "Ati yoga" in Sanskrit and the “Great Perfection" in English. The Nine yanas encompass the complete practices of all of Buddhism. Including the Dzogchen tradition, practices are categorized into nine yanas that give a complete picture of the entire buddhadharma. Within the nine yanas, the highest one is Ati. The way that Ati yoga is structured, most of the teachings are categorized as the ground, path, and fruition. These are the three categories. The ground means the “principle” because the main focus of Dzogchen is the view. The view is the perspective or the principle, which is very important in Dzogchen. Before meditation, we have what we call "the ground." “The ground” means “who we are, who you are, who I am.” The fundamental nature of all of us is explained in the ground. I will teach you about the ground aspect of Dzogchen later. Now, I would like to focus on the Dzogchen path. In Dzogchen, normally there is not too much shamatha meditation. In Mahamudra, we have this step-by-step shamatha meditation practice. First, we look at how our minds relate to meditation and how we can free our minds. Next, experience comes, and then the next level of meditation. That is the Mahamudra style. In Dzogchen, there is not so much of this step-by-step shamatha practice. The main teaching of Dzogchen is what we call "trekchö," meaning "cutting through." In the teachings of trekchö, the first important thing is pointing out the nature of mind. Of course, we need to have a foundational practice before that. -
