The Giants are clearly going to be gearing up for a long playoff run. General manager Bobby Evans and Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Brian Sabean are known for making savvy moves come this time of year. During the years they won the World Series, the Giants always made smaller trades that paid off big time. Their front office knows what it needs to do to reach the promised land. In 2010 they locked down the bullpen, acquiring Javier Lopez from the Pirates and Ramon Ramirez from the Red Sox. Both deals cost the Giants minor leaguers who have done nothing in the six years since those deals. In August they also claimed Cody Ross off waivers from the Marlins. In 2012 it was more about the bats. Marco Scutaro was acquired from Colorado, with the Giants once again giving up virtually nothing. Deadline day saw a larger acquisition, with Hunter Pence being brought into the fold. They needed to give up top prospect Tommy Joseph, who is finally getting a chance with the Phillies now.

    SF Giants Press Clips Tuesday, April 18, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Giants Triple-A reliever Kyle Crick sidelined by freak injury Henry Schulman KANSAS CITY — Right-hander Kyle Crick, who was off to a good start in his first Triple-A season, as a reliever, has gone on Sacramento’s disabled list because of a freak injury. Crick was hit in the head by a foul ball Sunday while sitting in the visiting dugout at Cashman Field in Las Vegas and sustained a concussion. Crick, 24, was the Giants’ sandwich-round pick in the 2011 draft. He fell off the prospect board as a starter because he could not harness his wildness. But the organization has stuck with him because of his stuff, including a swing-and-miss fastball. After a good big-league spring training, Crick pitched in three games for Sacramento and had four scoreless innings, no walks, five strikeouts and a save. He did not sustain any other head injuries in the mishap. Morse rehab: Outfielder Michael Morse (hamstring) and right-handed pitcher Bryan Morris (foot) have been assigned to Classs A San Jose on rehab assignments. 1 They were supposed to play Monday night against Visalia, but the game was rained out. The four-games series is expected to begin Tuesday, with a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday. Both players were injured in spring training. The group includes University of North Carolina men's coach Roy Williams, Louisiana State University women's coach Van Chancellor, the 1966 Texas Western University men's team, referee Marvin "Mendy" Rudolph and international coaches Pedro Ferrandiz of Spain and Mirko Novosel of Yugoslavia. Jackson, 61, has won nine NBA championships as a coach — six with the Chicago Bulls and three with the Lakers — tying Hall of Famer Red Auerbach's record. He has coached some of the NBA's greatest players, including Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with the Bulls and Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal with the Lakers. Jackson gets players to buy into his coaching philosophy, which is influenced by Native American and Eastern beliefs. "The great thing about Phil is the way he has handled players," Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said. "He has a different style, too, that old Zen thing. I love him because he never gets too high and never gets too low and always wants to help the guys grow as men. He teaches them basketball and also teaches them outside the sport." One of his more renowned strategies is handing out books for players to read during road trips. "He's trying to get players to see that there's more to life than the NBA and your performance today," said NBA TV analyst Steve "Snapper" Jones.
