In the last few years, a sharp increase in the number of descriptions of new species of West African cone snails, particularly from the Cabo Verde Archipelago, has taken place. In previous studies, we used mitogenome sequences for reconstructing robust phylogenies, which comprised in total 120 individuals representing the majority of species (69.7%) described from this biogeographical region (except Angolan endemics) and grouped into seven genera within the family Conidae. -

Fossile vivente?) a cura di Paolo Cesana In biologia, Chimera è un organismo che ''ha caratteri di molti altri'' (vedi nella mitologia il favoloso essere mostruoso. Le prime notizie della Chimera sono nel libro dell' Iliade). Qui di mostruoso non vi è nulla, ma anzi di meraviglioso, di una bellezza che abbaglia gli occhi (del malacologo e non). Parliamo della stupenda quanto misteriosa,enigmatica e rarissima CHIMAERIA INCOMPARABILIS (la Chimera incomparabile - BRIANO B. 1993). Chimera è il nome appropriato, perché questa splendida conchiglia (se ne conoscono, dati al 2009 solo 6 esemplari nelle collezioni di tutto il mondo) è un po’ un enigma per gli studiosi, chi la classifica nella grande Famiglia delle Cypraee - eocypraeinae - sottofam. Cypraeovulinae ? Chi nella Fam. Ovulidae - ovulinae. Anche il genere è contrastato, alcuni la classificano col genere SPHAEROCYPRAEA (con specie fossili molto simili l'attuale, risalenti all' Eocene, vedi fig. allegata ). EOCYPRAEIDAE è una piccola famiglia di Sphaerocypraea tardivelae grandi lumache di mare, consiste come detto principalmente di specie fossili (dall' Eocene inf. circa 55 milioni di anni) fino ai giorni nostri, vedere schema illustrativo. Linnaean specimens The UUZM catalogue of type specimens is issued in four parts: 1. C.P.Thunberg (1743-1828), Insecta 2. General zoology 3. Entomology 4. Linnaean specimens (this part) Unlike the other parts of the type catalogue this list of the Linnaean specimens is heterogenous in not being confined to a physical unit of material and in not displaying altogether specimens qualifying as types. Two kinds of links connect the specimens in the list: one is a documented curatorial tradition referring listed material to collections handled and described by Carl von Linné, the other is associated with the published references by Linné to literary or material sources for which specimens are available in the Uppsala University Zoological Museum. The establishment of material being 'Linnaean' or not (for the ultimate purpose of a typification) involves a study of the history of the collections and a scrutiny of individual specimens. An important obstacle to an unequivocal interpretation is, in many cases, the fact that Linné did not label any of the specimens included in the present 'Linnaean collection' in Uppsala (at least there are no surviving labels or inscriptions with his handwriting or referable to his own marking of specimens; a single exception will be pointed out below in the historical survey). A critical examination must thus be based on the writings of Linné, a consideration of the relation between between these writings and the material at hand, and finally a technical and archival scrutiny of the curatorial arrangements that have been made since Linné's time. -

Ecological Study of the Molluscan Fauna on Intertidal Artificial Rocky
1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background to the Study The Nigerian coastline is characterized by natural sandy and muddy beaches. There are no naturally occurring rocky shores along the Nigerian coast (Edokpayi et al, 2010). However, between 1908 and 1912, three moles were built seaward to forestall powerful East- West along shore currents that silt the entrance of Lagos harbour (Awosika, 2001; Nwankwo, 2004). These three moles at Tarkwa Bay in Lagos provide artificial rocky surfaces for the littoral molluscan communities (Lewis, 1964; Addessi, 1994; Edokpayi et al, 2010). Intertidal rocky shores contain critical habitats which include: migrating route, feeding, nesting, breeding, nursery areas for marine fauna and flora. It also serves as focal points for urban tourism, shell fisheries and scientific research (Asakura and Suzuki, 1987; Nwankwo, 2001; Clarke et al., 2002). Rocky intertidal communities develop in response to a wide range of interacting factors. The effect of the daily tidal cycles of submersion and emersion established basic vertical gradients of species richness and biomass (Menge and Daley, 1999; Murray, 2006). The other significant abiotic influences on these communities include the degree of wave action, substrate instability, substrate hardness and heterogeneity, sand inundation, desiccation stress, hydrographic variations i.e currents, upwelling, human induced and natural disturbance (Littler, 1980; Clarke and Grahame, 1999, 2002). The community structure are further and often profoundly, influenced by biotic interactions, especially by the presence of algae, seaweeds, filter feeders, grazing, competition and predation (Wood, 2001; Rose, 2003; Smith, et al., 2008). According to Chapman (2000), habitat, temperature, desiccation, salinity, food, predation and reproduction are the major factors limiting the distribution and abundance of littoral molluscs on global intertidal rocky 1 ecosystems. -
