Corresponding Author: S.Thangamalathi1 Abstract: The present studies were made on the analysis of heavy metals in relation to physico-chemical parameters with respect to pollution status of lake water from various regions (Ambattur lake, Chembarambakkam lake, Korattur lake, Porur lake, Pulicat lake, Puzhal lake and Retteri lake) in Chennai, Tamilnadu, during April 2017 to November 2017, Tamil Nadu, India. Surface water samples were collected from seven different regions at monsoon, post monsoon, summer and pre-monsoon seasons. The samples were analyzed for physico – chemical parameters include colour, odour, pH, EC, TH, Turbidity, TDS, BOD, COD, DO, F, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cl, Fe and SO₄. In the present study results showed that higher level of heavy metal concentration in the water has a high potential to concentrate heavy metals like lithium, Cd, Pb, As, Al, Ni and Cr though the observed concentrations are above the permissible limits except two metals (Zn and Al) are within the permissible limits. Based on these results there is serious heavy metal pollution in these lake.

The northern part of Chennai basin is occupied by Andhra Pradesh and Pulicat lake, south and west by the Palar river basin and east by Bay of Bengal. The total geographical area of Chennai basin within Tamil Nadu is 6118.34 sq km totally. It covers in the Survey of India toposheets 57‘O’, 57 ‘P’, 66’C’, and 66 ‘D’ and it also covers in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Vellore districts. Increased sanitation coverage is directly linked to improvement of health status. Water Supply is perhaps the most important and basic need that has to be provided with reliability, sustainability and affordability. In a water starved State like Tamil Nadu, which depends largely on seasonal rainfall, the provision of drinking water to the population acquires even more significance. With successive governments focusing on the need to improve the quality of life, water supply coupled with sanitation are essential in order to facilitate the citizens to lead a health and productive life. Water Supply Water Security has been one of the important objectives of the Government of Tamil Nadu during successive Five Year Plan Periods. Provision of drinking water security is seen not only as an end in itself but as a means of achieving health and ecological security. The lake has a surface area of 4500 acres and the capacity to hold 3300 million cubic litres of water. The lake currently holds 2 million cubic litres of water which is full of silt. Porur lake along with Chembarambakkam lake are providers of the drinking water to Chennai. The lake has almost completely gone dry with no vegetation at all. The sand has become completely sun baked. Though authorities claimed there is 2 million cubic litres of water in the lake but our ground check show not a single drop of water in the lake. Earlier, Mirror Now reported that the Chennai residents have started to move out of the city or shifting to other locations hoping to get better water supply. The failed monsoon in 2018 and insufficient rainfall in 2017 have led to depletion of ground water thereby causing severe water crisis in the city. The state government declared nearly 17 districts including Chennai and Kancheepuram as drought-hit earlier last month.

Even the most vociferous and arrogant stalwarts of the ruling classes and imperialism at The Economist were sceptical, if not outright cynical about this agreement and the elections. It describes the scene of the accord ceremony in its latest issue: “Neither man spoke, and neither looked quite at ease… The four-page document, signed in the presence of outgoing President Hamid Karzai, and later by witnesses James Cunningham, the American ambassador, and Jan Kubis, the United Nations’ senior Afghanistan representative (both of whom were banned from the palace ceremony by Mr Karzai), divests the president of his vast powers. “The so-called National Unity Government intends for Mr Ghani, a Western-educated technocrat and former World Bank employee, to become president, and for Dr Abdullah (or his nominee) to assume the role of Chief Executive Officer, newly-created by decree and similar to the position of prime minister. They have also pledged to fix the country’s election system, which allows voter fraud to flourish. “The secret back-room deal, which many think usurps democratic process, was announced hours before the election commission declared Mr Ghani the winner, and Dr Abdullah the CEO. In a strange kowtowing to Dr Abdullah, who had argued that the poll was poisoned by undetectable fraud, neither the vote tallies nor the turnout were announced.
