  • Lobero LIVE Presents the David Bromberg Quintet • Thursday, June 23 at 8 PM • Called, “The Godfather of Americana” • Virtuoso on Guitar, Mandolin, Dobro and More
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: Angie Bertucci | 805.679.6010 | [email protected] Tickets: Lobero Box Office | 805.963.0761 | Lobero.com Lobero LIVE presents The David Bromberg Quintet • Thursday, June 23 at 8 PM • Called, “the Godfather of Americana” • Virtuoso on guitar, mandolin, dobro and more Santa Barbara, CA, May 12, 2016 – Lobero LIVE is proud to welcome back David Bromberg and his phenomenal quintet on Thursday, June 23 at 8PM. David Bromberg, an acknowledged virtuoso on guitar, mandolin, dobro and other stringed instruments and a wry, distinctive vocalist, first made a name for himself in the late 1960s and early 1970’s as a musician’s musician, working as a session man for Bob Dylan (on New Morning, Self Portrait, and Dylan), Kris Kristofferson, Tom Paxton, Jerry Jeff Walker (with whom he toured for several years), Eric Andersen, John Prine, Dion, Link Wray, Ringo Starr, and many others. The David Bromberg Big Band, with which he performed and recorded in the late 1970’s and still reconvenes on occasion, was a raucous, loose-limbed approach to American roots music. After touring and recording extensively, Bromberg moved from San Francisco to Chicago in 1980 to study violin making. Bromberg has been operating David Bromberg Fine Violins, a retail shop. Frequent participation in the city’s weekly jam sessions helped rekindle Bromberg’s desire to make music again, as did the encouragement of fellow musicians Chris Hillman (The Byrds, Desert Rose Band, Flying Burrito Brothers) and bluegrass wizard Herb Pedersen. In 2013, content with the balance of both his violin business and performing career, David was ready to record again with his live band.

  • The World Before Scruggs
THE WORLD BEFORE SCRUGGS "Try to imagine the world before Earl Scruggs -- it's unbelievable!" This exclamation by Rick was how our May, 1985 talks began, and it offers a keynote for his music and his thinking. To hear this makes you realize there's a lot more to Rick Shubb than "the guy who makes those capos." Still, one little invention has made Rick's name a musical household word: the ingenious and beauti- ful guitar (and banjo) capo known, simply, as the Shubb capo. Actually, Rick's other products include the innovative Shubb banjo fifth-string sliding capo, the Shubb compensated banjo bridge, the Shubb- Pearse steel (a distinctive bar for Dobro and steel guitar), a pickup and amplifier designed specifically for the banjo (no longer on the market). Most recently, his aptitude for computer database develop- ment has led him to produce a line of computer software for musicians. The first in this line is SongMaster, which will keep track of your songs, followed by GigMaster, a booking tool for musi- cians. Both are easy and affordable, and now available. But the guitar capo in particular has really put his name on the map. • The Scottsville Squirrel Barkers, from the Blue Guitar to Country Rock
THE SCOTTSVILLE SQUIRREL BARKERS, FROM THE BLUE GUITAR TO COUNTRY ROCK In the early 60’s the “folk music revival” was having a strong impact on bluegrass music across the country. In 1959 The Stanley Brothers had played the Newport Folk Festival and in 1960 both The Stanleys and The Osborne Brothers performed at Antioch College in Ohio. In 1962 The Stanley Brothers played at Oberlin College and that same year Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs recorded a project entitled Folksongs of our Land which included 2 songs written by Woody Guthrie. These were not isolated incidents as many of the established bands as well as some regional groups were taking advantage of the interest in their music among a new generation of urban youth. Many would argue that the music was diminished by these efforts to appeal to the folk music fans, particularly the changes in repertoire, but there was no question that it’s popularity was increasing. Bluegrass was attracting new disciples to new venues in new areas of the country. One of those places was San Diego, California where a group of young men from different backgrounds were gathering to make music. Although the group was an amalgam of musical genres from folk to flamenco, one sub- group was drawn to traditional bluegrass and the individuals in this group were destined to make their mark on the soon to be born genre of country rock. That group, formed in 1962, was the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers . Bernie Leadon, contemporary of the Squirrel Barkers and later founding member of the Eagles was living in San Diego at the time and in an e-mail interview described one component of the community which would have readily embraced the sounds of bluegrass and talked about his introduction to the music scene.
