At this point the units beginning with Fabric 1) to a 31/2" light blue triangle should measure 31/2" x 61/2". (one from Fabrics 8-11). Press toward the light blue triangle. Using the remaining Fabric 1 pink triangles and a variety of light blue triangles, make a total of 7 units. Step 4. Draw a diagonal line on the back side of each of two identical light blue squares. Place a square on one corner of a Fabric 12 rectangle (fig. a). Sew on the line. Trim off the excess corner leaving a 1/4" seam allowance (fig. b). Press the seam towards the triangle (fig. c). Repeat for a second corner on the adjacent side (fig. d). a Repeat with each of the remaining Fabrics 2-4 pink triangles and a variety of light blue triangles of Fabrics 8-11, making a total of 28 units. c d Step 2. Sew a 31/2" Fabric 6 triangle to a 31/2" light blue triangle. Press away from the light blue triangle. At this point the unit should measure 61/2" x 31/2". Repeat with all the Fabric 12 rectangles and light blue squares. Make 28 units. Using a variety of light blue triangles, make a total of 9 units. Step 5. Matching light blue fabrics, sew the Step 3 and Step 4 units together to make the boat blocks, pressing the center seam down. Make 28 total units. At this point the blocks should measure 61/2" square. Repeat with Fabric 5 triangles, making 9 units. Repeat with Fabric 7 triangles, making 10 units. 2 Assembling the Quilt Step 1. Sew four boat blocks and a variety of four 61/2" squares together in a row as shown below. Press towards the squares. Make 4 rows. (Tip: If desired, use a design board to lay out the entire quilt and arrange the blocks to your satis- faction before sewing rows together.) Step 2. Sew four boat blocks and a variety of four 61/2" squares together in a row as shown below. Make 3 rows. Step 3. Sew the Fabric 13 sashing to the top of all the Step 1 and Step 2 rows. Press towards the sashing strip. Alternating Step 1 and Step 2 rows, sew the rows together, ending with a sashing strip at the top and at the bottom. Borders Piece, measure and trim two borders the width of the quilt. Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt, pressing toward the borders. Repeat for the sides of the quilt. Miter the corners (if needed, see Mitered Borders tutorial in Tips section under Projects at www.maywoodstudio.com). Press the seams open. Finishing the Quilt Step 1. Layer the backing, the batting and the quilt top. Baste, then quilt as desired. Before binding, hand-baste a scant 1/4" from the edge of the quilt to hold the layers together. Step 2. Prepare the binding strips by joining with diagonal seams pressed open. Fold the binding in half, wrong sides together and press to make a double binding. Step 3. Sew the binding to the quilt with a 3/8" seam, mitering the corners. Trim the excess batting and backing and turn the binding to the back side. Stitch down by hand with matching thread. 3 Alternate Paper Template (for use in lieu of suggested tool) long edge of fabric strip 1 inch After printing this page, measure this square to ensure that the templates are of accurate size. square If not, adjust print settings until correct. 3½" Easy Angle (3" Finished) long edge of fabric strip 4.
