1 PREFACE This clan originates with William Warburton born in Urmston in 1760. The only baptism that ﬁts is William, the son of John Owen, or Warburton. The ‘or Warburton is omitted from the Bishop’s Transcripts.

This implies John Owen was illegitimate, and he sometimes used his mother’s name, and sometimes his father’s.

Recent clan details are provided by Andrew Warburton. Andy has DNA results that give his Y-chromosome haplogroup as R-DF98. 1. William Warburton. William was born in Urmston, Lancashire, on 16 Mar 1760. He was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 30 Mar 1760. William died in Urmston, Lancashire, in 1819. He was buried in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 14 Sep 1819.

William is recorded in the parish register as the son of John Owen or Warburton of Urmston. The ‘or Warburton’ is omitted from the Bishop’s Transcripts. The date fits his age at death of 59 on his burial, and there is no obvious alternative baptism of a William Warburton.

There are two possible explanations as to why John was Owen or Warburton.

The first is that John was illegitimate and these were his mother’s and father’s names. No record of an illegitimate birth of a John Owen or Warburton has yet been found.

The second is that John’s father died young and his mother remarried. The second husband’s name may have been used by the whole family for convenience, but when John grew up he began to use his own father’s name.

In either case it isn’t obvious which name was John’s father’s. Also it is possible that John Owen’s son did not use the Warburton name, and that William’s baptism has yet to be discovered.

On 19 Oct 1784 when William was 24, he married Betty Muddiman in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire. Both were ‘of the parish of Flixton’. Betty was born in Flixton, Lancashire, on 6 Feb 1760. She was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 2 Mar 1760. Betty died in 1837. She was buried in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 7 Jan 1837.

4 First Generation They had the following children: i. Martha Warburton. Martha was born in Urmston, Lancashire, in 1785. She was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 31 Jul 1785. ii. John Warburton. John was born in Urmston, Lancashire, in 1787. He was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 27 May 1787. iii. Thomas Warburton. Thomas was born in Urmston, Lancashire, in 1789. He was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 30 Aug 1789. 2 iv. Peter Warburton (1791-1863) v. Samuel Warburton. Samuel was born in Urmston, Lancashire, in 1793. He was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 23 Jun 1793.

On 12 Jan 1815 when Samuel was 22, he married Ann Royle in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester. There is no evidence found that Samuel and Ann had children. Ann was born in 1788. She was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 27 Jul 1788. vi. George Warburton. George was born in Urmston, Lancashire, in 1795. He was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 23 Aug 1795. vii. William Warburton. William was born in Urmston, Lancashire, in 1799. He was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 20 Oct 1799. ■ Census for Wilmslow, Cheshire, in 1851. William (51) is an annuitant lodging in Holly Lane with John Owen (60) a farmer of 20 acres, born in Urmston, his wife Mary (44) from Heaton Noris, and daughter Ellen (18) from Etchells. William died in Urmston, Lancashire, in 1872.

William’s death was registered in 1q 1872 Salford 8d 5, aged 73. Cenuses show he was a schoolmaster who never married and was blind by 1871. In 1851 he was lodging in Wilmslow with John Owen, a farmer who was also born in Urmston.

In February 1854 William was lodging with his brother Samuel, Samuel’s wife Ann, and Ann’s great niece Mary when they were appeared in a number of newspaper articles about the Butter Boggart of Old Lostock (see the Warburton Website for details). William was an unemployed schoolmaster at the time.

2. Peter Warburton (William1). Peter was born in Urmston, Lancashire, in 1791. He was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 21 Aug 1791. ■ Census for Manchester, Lancashire, in 1841. Peter (49) is a painter living in Mill or (sic) Hallsworth Street with Ann (45), George (20) a weaver, Samuel (15) a weaver, Elizabeth Darbyshire (55), Edward Gosling (20) a Police Officer, and his wife Elizabeth (20) a weaver, and their child Mary Ann (3 months). Elizabeth is Peter’s daughter. ■ Census for Manchester, Lancashire, in 1851. Peter (59) is a Chapel keeper (Baptist Chapel) living at 24 Chapel Court, Rochdale Road with Ann (60), Samuel (27) a glass packer, grandson James (7), a lodger and a visitor. ■ Census for Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1861. Peter (69) is a painter and paper hanger living with Ann (69), at the home of his widowed daughter-in-law Mary (48) and her children. Peter died in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1863. He was buried in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 19 Apr 1863.

Peter’s baptism record is immediately before that of his future wife, Ann Darbyshire. His death was registered in 2q 1863 Chorlton 8c 433, aged 71.

Peter was a weaver on his children’s baptisms (except George whose baptism record hasn’t been found), and on daughter Elizabeth’s marriage in 1840, but by the 1841 census he had become a painter.

On 9 Aug 1813 when Peter was 22, he married Ann Darbyshire in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire. Ann was born in Flixton, Lancashire, in 1791. She was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 21 Aug 1791. Ann died in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1863. She was buried in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 10 May 1863.

Ann’s death was registered in 2q 1863 Chorlton 8c 444, aged 71.

6 Second Generation They had the following children: 3 i. John Warburton (1813-1853) ii. Elizabeth Warburton. Elizabeth was born in Northern Etchells, Cheshire, in 1814. She was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 11 Jul 1814.

Elizabeth’s father is a weaver on her baptism record.

On 26 Jan 1840 when Elizabeth was 26, she married Edward Gosling in Eccles, St Mary, Lancashire. Elizabeth was a minor from Pendleton, father Peter, a weaver. Edward was a fustian cutter from Pendleton, father Edward, a fustian cutter. The marriage was registered in 1q 1840 Barton, Worsley and Flixton 20 73. Including Mary Ann, two girls and two boys were registered at Chorlton by 1846.

Edward was policeman in the 1841 census. He was an Inspector of Police when his son William married Margaret Warburton (his wife’s niece) in 1872. 4 iii. George Warburton (1816-1876) iv. William Warburton. William was born in Northern Etchells, Cheshire, in 1821. He was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 12 Aug 1821.

William’s father is a weaver on his baptism record. 5 v. Samuel Warburton (1824-1910) vi. Thomas Warburton. Thomas was born in Ringley, Lancashire, in 1825. He was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 16 Aug 1825.

3. John Warburton (Peter2, William1). John was born in Urmston, Lancashire, in 1813. He was christened in Flixton, St Michael, Lancashire, on 2 Jan 1814. John died in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1853. He was buried in Chorlton upon Medlock, St Saviour, Lancashire, on 29 May 1853.

John’s father was a weaver on his baptism record. His death was registered in 2q 1853 Chorlton 8c 396, aged 39.

On 11 Jun 1837 when John was 24, he married Mary Rothwell in Eccles, St Mary, Lancashire. John and Mary were both ‘of this parish’. Mary (48) is a widowed manglewoman living at 5 Alice Street with Elizabeth (18) a weaver, Samuel (10), father-in-law Peter (69) a painter and paper hanger, and mother-in-law Ann (69). ■ Census for Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1871. Mary (59) is a widow living at 5 Alice Street with Samuel (20) a glass cutter, Elizabeth (28) a cotton weaver, Letitia (5) probably Elizabeth’s daughter, Margaret Biggs (23) a cotton weaver described as daughter, Sarah Ann Biggs (2), Mary Ellen Warburton (19) a throttle spinner and daughter-in-law (wife of Samuel), and John Warburton (6 months).

They had the following children: i. Ann Warburton. Ann was born in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1837.

Margaret’s birth was registered in 4q 1847 Chorlton 20 256, mother’s maiden name Rotherwell. Her death is probably that registered in 4q 1893 Ashton 8d 362, aged 45, as it is the best fit on age.

On 4 Nov 1868 when Margaret was 21, she first married James Briggs in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester. Margaret was from 5 Alice Street, father John, a weaver. James was from 45 Devonshire Street, Hulme, father Thomas, a hawker. James and

On 3 Feb 1872 when Margaret was 25, she second married William Gosling in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester. Margaret was from 5 Alice Street, father John, a weaver. William was from 2 Alice Street, Hulme, father Edward, an Inspector of Police. James and Margaret had 2 daughters. William was born in 1845. William died in 1882. 7 v. Samuel Warburton (1850-1906) vi. Martha Warburton. Martha was born in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1853. Martha died in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1854.

Martha’s birth was registered in 2q 1853 Chorlton 8c 556, mother’s maiden name Rothwell. As she is missing from the 1861 census her death is probably that registered in 2q 1854 Chorlton 8c 330, aged 0.

4. George Warburton (Peter2, William1). George was born in Manchester, Lancashire, on 11 Jul 1816. George (34) is a power loom weaver living at 6 Seddons Court with Sarah (28), Peter (9), Wm (5), and Ann (3). ■ Census for Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1861. George (44) is a glass packer living at 6 Fletcher’s Square with Sarah (38), James (17) a packer in glass works, William (15) a stoker up (at engine), Ann (13), and Mary (4). ■ Census for Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1871. George (54) is a glass packer living at 26 Clarence Street with Sarah (49), Mary (14) a weaver, Sarah J (7), James (27) a glass maker, daughter-in-law Elizabeth (24), and grandchildren Sarah A (4), and George (5 months). George died in Chorlton, Lancashire, in 1876.

George’s death was registered in 1q 1876 Chorlton 8c 550, aged 58.

On 1 Aug 1841 when George was 25, he married Sarah Morris in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester. George was a weaver from 71 Mill Street, father Peter, a printer. Sarah was from 5 York Street Chorlton upon Medlock, father Edward a coach maker. The marriage was registered in 3q 1841 Manchester 20 426. Sarah was born in Manchester, Lancashire, abt 1823. Sarah died in Manchester, Lancashire, in 1874.

Sarah’s death is probably that registered in 1q 1874 Chorlton 8c 545, aged 50.

Samuel’s father was a weaver on his baptism record. His death was registered in 1q 1910 Chorlton 10 Third Generation 8c 533, aged 84.

On 1 Aug 1852 when Samuel was 28, he first married Hannah Rayner in Manchester, St Mary, Lancashire. Samuel (29) was an overlooker from 5 Chapel Court, father Peter, a weaver. Hannah (27) was from 1 St Michael’s Place, father James, a watchman. Hannah was born abt 1825. Hannah died in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1875.

They had the following children: 11 i. James William Warburton (1854-1937) ii. John Thomas Warburton. John Thomas was born in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1856.

John’s birth was registered in 2q 1856 Chorlton 8c 607, mother’s maiden name Rayner. iii. Ada Victoria Warburton. Ada Victoria was born in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1863. Ada Victoria died in Manchester, Lancashire, in 1925.

Ada’s birth was registered in 3q 1863 Chorlton 8c 604, mother’s maiden name Rayner. Her second name of Victoria was not included so must have been adopted later. Her death was registered in 1q 1925 Manchester South 8d 332, aged 61.

In 1882 when Ada Victoria was 19, she married Joseph Greatorix in Whalley Range, St Margaret, Lancashire. The marriage was registered in 4q 1882 Chorlton 8c 1107. Joseph was born in 1862.

In 1877 when Samuel was 53, he second married Elizabeth Hale in Chorlton upon Medlock, Register Office or Registrar Attended, Lancashire. The marriage was registered in 3q 1877 Chorlton 8c 965.

6. Elizabeth Warburton (John3, Peter2, William1). Elizabeth was born in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1842. Elizabeth died in Stockport, Cheshire, in 1902.

Elizabeth’s birth was registered in 4q 1842 Chorlton 20 212, mother’s maiden name Rothwell. She died sometime after the 1901 census, when she was a widow in the Stockport Union Workhouse. Her death is probably that registered in 1q 1902 Stockport 8a 68, aged 69.

She first did not marry Hardman.

They had one child: i. Letitia Hardman Warburton. Letitia Hardman was born in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1866. Letitia Hardman died in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1901.

Letitia’s birth was registered in 1q 1866 Chorlton 8c 704. Gro.gov gives no mother’s maiden name, implying an illegitimate birth. Lancashire BMD gives mother’s maiden name as Warburton, and sub-district as Hulme. Her death is probably that registered in 4q 1901 Chorlton 8c 465, aged 35, sub-district Didsbury (LancashireBMD).

On 29 Sep 1872 when Elizabeth was 30, she second married Samuel James Cooper in Salford, St Simon, Lancashire. Elizabeth (29), father John a weaver. Samuel (27), father Thomas a finisher. Samuel and Elizabeth had three sons. Samuel James was born in Salford, Lancashire, on 15 May 1846. He was christened in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, on 19 Jul 1846. Samuel James died in Stockport, Cheshire, in 1893.

Samuel’s death was registered in 4q 1893 Stockport 8a 47, aged 50.

7. Samuel Warburton (John3, Peter2, William1). Samuel was born in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1850. Samuel died in Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1906.

Samuel’s’s birth was registered in 3q 1850 Chorlton 20 277, mother’s maiden name Rothwell. His death is probably that registered in 2q 1906 Manchester 8d 141, aged 58. The age is a little high but it is the closest local registration.

On 7 Aug 1870 when Samuel was 20, he married Mary Ellen Conley in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester. Samuel (20) was a glass cutter from Booth Street, father John, a weaver. Mary (20) was from Booth Street, father Thomas, a printer. Mary Ellen was born in Wigan, Lancashire, in 1850. Mary Ellen died in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1928.

Mary’s death was registered in 3q 1928 Manchester South 8d 227, aged 77, sub-district Hulme (LancashireBMD). 12 Fourth Generation They had the following children: i. John Warburton. John was born in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1870. He was christened in Hulme, St Philip, Lancashire, on 25 Sep 1870. John died in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1872.

John’s birth was registered in 3q 1870 Chorlton 8c 733, mother’s maiden name Connolly. ii. Martha Ann Warburton. Martha Ann was born in Ardwick, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1876. Martha Ann died in Ashton, Lancashire, in 1950.

Martha was born at 14 Water Street. Her birth was registered in 4q 1876 Chorlton 8c 717, mother’s maiden name Conly.

In 1895 when Martha Ann was 19, she married James Miller in Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire. The marriage was registered in 3q 1895 Manchester 8d 422. iii. Emily Warburton. Emily was born in Manchester, Lancashire, in 1881.

On 5 Apr 1862 when Peter was 20, he married Sarah Mercer in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester. Peter (20) was a glass maker from 113 Water Street, father George, a glass maker. Sarah (18) was from Liverpool Road, father Samuel, a porter. The marriage was registered in 2q 1862 Manchester 8d 122. Sarah was born in Manchester, Lancashire, in 1845. She was christened in Manchester, Lancashire, on 16 Feb 1845.

On 30 Dec 1888 when Alice was 20, she married Joseph Rawson in Hulme, St Stephen, Lancashire. Joseph was born abt 1867. iv. Peter Warburton. Peter was born in Manchester, Lancashire, in 1870. He was christened in Ancoats, St Jude, Lancashire, on 13 Nov 1870. Peter died on 15 Apr 1871. He was buried in Miles Platting, Philips Park Cemetery, Lancashire. v. Samuel Warburton. Samuel was born in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, in 1872.

George is a glass fire stoker living at 2 Garden Street with his daughter Elizabeth, her husband Albert Jones, and her invalid son George. Also present is son Thomas a press moulder. George’s birth registration has not been found. There is no registration that matches his date of birth as recorded in the 1939 Register. His death was registered in 2q 1950 Salford 10f 522, aged 81.

Neither Elizabeth’s marriage to Albert Jones, nor her marriage to Mr Biggs has not been found.

A birth registration in 1q 1923 Salford 8d 180 for George A Jones, mother’s maiden name Warburton, exactly matches the date of birth of her son George in the 1939 Register. This would imply that Mr Biggs died and Elizabeth remarried in the less than 2 years between the births of Rose and George.

The only birth registration that matches Gladys’s date of birth from the 1939 Register is that in 3q 1908 West Derby 8b 649, mother’s maiden name Maddox.

No death registration has been found for Gladys under the name Warburton, though it is believed she didn’t remarry.
