2017 SEASON: NEWSLETTER NO. 11 – JULY 1

Top three are breaking away at half-way stage

THE season’s half-way stage was reached on Saturday with low scores the order of the day in the ECB Premier League after a week of wet weather. Didsbury, Grappenhall and Hyde all failed to reach 100. Alderley Edge showed real title form with a 10 wickets win at , while stayed nine points behind after winning at Hyde and Timperley remained an impressive third just six points further back by beating Grappenhall. Timperley’s handicap is that they may be unable to play any 1st XI home fixtures at Stockport Road this season due to the continuing unsatisfactory condition of their relaid outfield. A decision is expected this week. At the Premiership’s half-way stage last season the placings were: 1. Alderley 205 pts.; 2. Bowdon 179; 3= Chester & Hyde 171. At the end in September the top of the table read: 1. Alderley 386. 2. Bowdon 361; 3. Hyde 340, so there was no change. Neston mustered only 123 runs at Parkgate against the champions, for whom Aussie paceman Hamish Winter-Irving took 5-41. In a reply of 127-0, Alan Day hit 63 and Calum Rowe 51. All over in 37 overs Chester’s form remained steady with a nine wickets win at Hyde, whom they bowled out for just 70 in 28 overs, James Duffy 38. Will Owen took 5-30 and the in-form Alex Kegg 4-36. CBH replied with 74-1 in just nine overs, Warren Goodwin 44, the match lasting a mere 37 overs. While Hyde have won only one league game, they are unbeaten in all cup competitions. Timperley were impressive at Grappenhall, producing the premiership’s highest tally of 209-6, thanks to Kiwi Dan Cooper with a painstaking 97 from 52 overs. Grappenhall were all out for 93, Peter Barnes 41. Cheshire paceman Jack White included a lethal treble-wicket maiden in his 7-55 while contemplating a long drive down to Sidmouth later that evening. Grappers lost key all- rounder Albert Pennington with a badly damaged hand and he may miss a month’s cricket. continue to rise after routing Didsbury for 86, number 11 batsman Liam Booth top- scoring with 20 against Jimmy , 5-38 and Ollie Freckingham, 5-47. The Dabbers responded with 87-5 after being in trouble at 52-5, Ryan Brown steadying the ship with 40 not out. Bramhall did their survival chances good with a 27-run home win over Bowdon after posting 201, Adam Wilde 54, Matt Higginbottom 49, Sultan Raja 6-42. Bowdon’s batting improved, but they still fell short at 174, Dewi Jones 67. Higginbottom wound up a good day with 5-34. Toft beat Cheadle by five wickets at Booth’s Park after bowling their visitors out for 131, Greg Dixon 41, Tom Forster 6-50. Forster (30) also shone with the bat in Toft’s reply helping Henry Hughes, 45 reach 134-5. JULY 1 NEWSLETTER: p2

Warrington v Weaverham thriller was unreported

DUE to details not being posted on the league website by the scheduled cut-off time of 12 noon on Sunday, the full story of the game between First Division strugglers Warrington and Weaverham at Walton Lea on Saturday, June 23 was not reported in last week’s Newsletter. Which is a shame because the match was a memorable one, for the following reasons: Put in to bat, wooden-spoonists Weaverham mustered only 108, their top scorers being skipper Ian Eaton with 30 and Jim Lewis, 24, while bowler James Rudd came on late to take four wickets with the last five balls of the innings to finish with an analysis of 0.5-0-0-4 …two lbw, two bowled Warrington’s reply was also dominated by bowlers, their top scorer being Brad McIntosh, with 19. They eventually edged home at 109-8 after being deep in trouble at 85-8 before Man of the Match Rudd, 15 and Ashley Scholes, 10, steered their side home by two wickets at 109-8 and take 25 points to three for Weaverham, whose Kevin Douglas had the fine bowling analysis of 15-5-38-6. O Home clubs are again urged to note the league instruction reproduced on the back page of this Newsletter which requires them to post team totals, points and brief individual details by 10 p.m. on Saturday …and full set out scores by 12 noon on Sunday.

Washout for Forties

THE Over Forties section suffered a complete washout on Wednesday last week, all 16 games in the four divisions being affected by a curtain of rain which failed to lift all day. It’s a ill-wind that blows no one any good, however, Bowdon picked up their first points of the season, but still foot the North-East zone table. Several home clubs failed to register cancellations either on the website or by e-mail, but are assumed to have had their games called off. Clubs are urged to contact Timperley regarding future away games against that club, who continue to have problems with their main ground. The secondary pitch is regularly in use.
