Therefore, I have chosen to study on one, of the greatest figures of the English literature, E-M Forster and, his best novel A Passage To India. The echo in the Marabar caves levels all meaning to one declares "Everything exist; nothing has value". [Lucy] thought not so much of what had happened as of how she should describe it. ... But ... her words fell short of life. (A Room with a View 68, 94, 229) A Room with a View invites the same question that Charlotte Bartlett asks when she sees George Emerson's "enormous note of interroga- tion": "What does it mean?" (43). The reply might be that Forster's novel is "about" such matters as love, art, self-realization, Edwardian manners, feminism, values and their revision, exposure and conceal- ment, completion and interruption, daily life and celestial life, the subconscious mind, language, myth-and so on. -

Away 0 soul! hoist instancly the anchor! ... And we will risk the ship, ourselves and all. -Wait Whitman's "Passage to India" .M. FORSTER HAS BEEN TARGETED for his status as a member Eof the Empire's elite as often as he has been celebrated for his sensitive portrayal of India's reaction to colonial rule. The subtle degrees to which Forster participated in the pleasures of conquest while writing against impe rialism is complicated by his privately lived marginalization as a homosexual. Nowhere does Forster oscillate more sharply between an Orientalist and anti-imperialist impulse than in those works in which the issue ofhomosexu ality intersects questions of race and empire. In such works, Forster seems as critical of the divisiveness of colonial rule as he is stifled by the lingering pall of Victorian values at the turn of the twentieth century. Yet, Forster's own liberal humanist ideals seem stretched to the limits of the imagination in representations of interracial sexual unions which, even when allowed to run their natural course, invariably culminate in disconcerting scenes of domination, violence and brutality. Forster's contradictions notwithstanding, his writing rarely fails to articulate the central role of sexual politics in the discourse of colonialism, at home and abroad. The inextricable relationship between sexuality and empire is vividly imagined in Forster's posthumously published collection, The Life to Come and Other Stories ( 1972). -

M. Forster (1879-1970) can be regarded as one of the most controversial writers of his time, and Howards End has always been the most controversial of his novels. Divergences of the criticism on the novel reside mainly in its ambivalence and ambiguity as a result of Forster’s “double vision,” and its happy, but unconvincing ending that seems to embody the ultimate and comprehensive “connection” of all those opposing forces Forster has discerned in modern society. The present thesis aims to reveal the connotation of the epigraphy “Only connect…” and Forster’s real intention to conceive such a happy ending whose “connection” is actually one-sided, so as to justify Forster’s “double vision.” The present thesis consists of six chapters, an “Introduction,” and a “Conclusion.” “Introduction” briefly traces the vicissitudes of Forster criticism and scholarship, then introduces the main points of controversy on Howards End: whether Forster’s “double vision” in Howards End is its strength or weakness, with Woolf on one side and Widdowson on the other. -

Forster, 'The Other Boat' In one of his many essays on the East that date from the early 1920s, E.M. Forster turns his attention to a geographical location that, for decades to come, would exert extraordinary emotional and political pressures upon him. Writing at a time when Egyptian resentment against the British occupation was starting to die down, Forster focuses on the large brooding figure whose imperialist shadow loomed over Port Said. 'Salute to the Orient!' he exclaims, in tones that quickly deepen in their mockery. Beyond the Traditional: An Attempt to Reassess E. M. Forster’s Fiction Anna Grmelová Charles University, Prague E. M. Forster’s position within the development of the 20th century British novel has been somewhat ambivalent: on the one hand his traditional poetics has been stressed (cf. both Czech academic surveys of English Literature), while on the other his attachment to the Bloomsbury Group has been foregrounded. Following an analysis of all his six novels, a major part of his short stories and literary critical essays I intend to document the tendency of his fiction towards modernist aesthetics. At the outset I would like to mention only some essential factographic data: four of Forster’s novels, namely, Where Angels Fear to Tread, A Room With a View, The Longest Journey and Howards End were published during the Edwardian period, his novel A Passage to India was brought out in 1924, and only posthumously, in 1971, was his homosexual novel Maurice (which was completed in 1914) published, along with his short stories focusing on the same subject. It must have been the polyvalence of Forster’s novels, with their deceptive air of simplicity, which brought them such a wide readership in the first quarter of the 20th century when compared to the novels of the great modernist triumvirate, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce and D. H. Lawrence. Yet the meaning of Forster’s novels is not revealed through their plots but through symbolic moments in the lives of the characters which are not immediately entirely comprehensible to them. Daniel Schwarz characterises Forster aptly when he claims that Forster’s plots reflect discontinuity and flux and that his characters are victims of confusions (Schwarz 1989: 136). -

Adaptation, Inspiration, Dialogue: E.M. Forster and His Oeuvre in Contemporary Culture Krzysztof Fordoński University of Warsaw Abstract The article aims at charting the position of Edward Morgan Forster and his works in contemporary English language culture. It presents various forms of adaptations of or responses to the works of Forster, concentrating on those which have been created since the writer’s death in 1970. The discussed material consists of approximately one hundred instances of various works of art related in a number of ways to Forster’s oeuvre and biography: adaptations, works inspired by Forster’s oeuvre or biography, and, finally, works which enter into a dialogue with Forster and his views. Radio plays, operas, plays, movies, musicals, comic books, concept albums, etc. have been included as well. The paper also touches upon Forster’s reception among scholars and in political journal- ism. The paper is supplemented with lists of various adaptations. Keywords: E.M. Forster have played an important role in the English-speaking world and beyond it1 ever since his position was first generally recognised after the publication of Howards End in 1910.2 Forster’s presence was originally felt the most clearly through his literary works, namely novels and short stories. Yet, with the passage of time, he began to exert influence also as a reviewer, an essayist, and a radio broadcaster. Artists – at first fellow novelists but gradually also playwrights, composers, graphic artists, and others – found in Forster’s oeuvre and life a greatly various source of creative inspiration which continues to be fruitful fifty years after the writer’s death. -

REVOLT AND THE IDEAL IN BLOOMSBURY* LINDA HUTCHEON McMaster University One good justification for a study of revolt and the ideal in the sex and art of Bloomsbury-at a time when feminism and homosexuality are current issues-can be found in the public response to members of the Bloomsbury group' during their own lifetimes. Although the aim of their contemporaries' criticism ran the gamut from class to personality, from financial status to ideology, the major emphasis seems to have rested upon their art and their sexual mores. At first the relationship between these two points of attack seems rather startling, given the relative lack of explicit sex in the published works of E. M. Forster, Lytton Strachey, and Virginia Woolf-the three major writers of the group. Their books were never banned, as were those of D. H. Lawrence or Radclyffe Hall, yet critics such as Roy Campbell attacked them as both artists and as "sexless folk whose sexes intersect." In The Georgiad, Campbell set out, among other things, to parody Vir ginia Woolf's Orlando with his own Androgyno, a "joint Hermaphrodite-of letters," complete with long blue stockings and a sexual metamorphosis. His multi-directional satire seems to be directed against Vita Sackville-West and also Woolf's androgynous literary creation, since he specifically calls his crea ture a "new Orlando" speaking with a "Bloomsbury accent." However, the homosexuality of Bloomsbury in general also comes under attack; Both sexes rampantly dispute the field And at alternate moments gain or yield. This was no neuter of a doubtful gender, But both in him attained their fullest splendour, Unlike our modern homos who are neither He could be homosexual with either.
