RAJARATNAM SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES SINGAPORE 21 NOVEMBER 2019 Abstract This paper examines the Prosperous and Justice Party (PKS)’s strategy in the 2019 Indonesian general elections. Among the Islamic-based political parties, PKS gained the most significant increase in votes. We aspire to understand the breakthrough by looking at the party’s strategy. On the one hand, our findings confirm the existing studies that correctly noted the moving of Indonesian political parties towards a “catch-all” direction by which they aim to garner wider support beyond a specific type of voter base. On the other hand, our research notes that PKS has started to exploit the phenomenon of rising Islamic conservatism in Indonesia. Despite solely maintaining an inclusive electoral strategy, this research asserts that the party has adjusted its campaign strategy to fit in with the trend of rising Islamic conservatism while concurrently exploiting the anti-incumbent president (Joko Widodo) sentiment. This paper aims to enhance discussion on Indonesian politics as well as Indonesia’s political parties, particularly the PKS.

  • In Search of Hegemony: Islamism and the State in Indonesia
In Search of Hegemony: Islamism and the State in Indonesia LUQMAN NUL HAKIM This thesis is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Melbourne February 2019 Declaration I certify that this thesis is the product of my own research, fewer than the maximum word limit in length, and contains no material which has been accepted as part of the requirements of any other degree at any tertiary education institution, or any material previously published by another person except where due reference is made. Luqman Nul Hakim i Abstract In post-authoritarian Indonesia, but particularly following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Islamism has become a contentious matter of scholarly debate. The prominent accounts emerging from security and democratisation studies place much analytical weight on ideology and culture by often portraying the relationship between Islam and politics in essentialist fashion, associating the dynamics of Islamism with interpretations of Islamic doctrine or the contest between moderate and radical Muslims. The institutionalist literature, on the contrary, explains the rise of Islamism as the result of the weak capacity of the state following the fall of the centralised New Order authoritarian regime. Another variant draws attention to the moderation of Islamic politics as the result of participation in democratic processes, especially electoral politics. Yet, such linear and teleological explanations obscure the complex circumstances that establish the different trajectories of Islamism. They also fail to comprehend how the prevalence of Islamist discourse on power struggles in the current democracy can produce a more conservative and illiberal form of Islamism. In contrast, this thesis utilises the politics of hegemony approach as developed in the traditions of political discourse theory.

  • Konflik Komunikasi Antara Pendukung Calon Presiden 01 Dan 02 Di Media Daring

Ahead of the 2018 electoral election and the 2019 presidential election, religious sentiments are often used for pragmatic political interests. An example is reflected on 2019 Ganti Presiden Movement. In the context of post- truth politics, feelings and opinions influence the discourse of public politics more than objective facts. In other words, the line between facts and opinions is blurred. Hoax, opinions, and distortions of fact dominate the existing political discourses. This paper uses a sociological approach to analyzing post-truth political phenomena in Indonesia as reflected in recent cases of politicization of religion. The paper also provides a brief overview of some popular data and facts in actual political discourse as evidence of disinformation. However, the politicization of religion reflects unhealthy democratic conditions. Issues of religion in Indonesian context is sensitive and prone to be the trigger of conflict. This paper asserts that the politicization of religion in the post-truth era must be addressed critically and seriously, so that the climate of democracy in Indonesia can be well preserved.

Laksmana Dewi Fortuna Anwar Ann Marie Murphy © The National Bureau of Asian Research, Seattle, Washington asia policy Introduction ndonesia’s 2019 general election and the inauguration of Joko Widodo I (Jokowi) for a second term as president took place concurrent with the United States and Indonesia celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations, making this an opportune time to assess the state of democracy in Indonesia and the role the country plays in the Indo-Pacific region. ThisAsia Policy roundtable examines the outcomes and implications of the 2019 Indonesian presidential election. It also addresses Indonesia’s regional leadership role in Southeast Asia and what Jokowi’s foreign policy toward Asia and the United States might look like during his second term. In the roughly twenty years since the fall of Suharto’s authoritarian New Order regime in 1998, Indonesia has made considerable progress toward becoming a fully functional democracy—no small feat in a highly heterogeneous country of over 260 million people dispersed across more than seventeen thousand islands. In April, incumbent Jokowi defeated former three-star general and member of Suharto’s inner circle Prabowo Subianto in Indonesia’s fourth national presidential election. The election campaigns, as well as the election’s aftermath, were highly divisive due to the prevalence of religious-based identity politics and the political polarization of the candidates’ supporters. Prabowo ran an ultranationalist hard-line campaign and allied with conservative Islamist groups that are seeking to expand Islam’s role in public life.

But the landscape could change as PAN, PKS and Democratic Party are likely to leave Gerindra alone. JK’s maneuvers In the midst of political turbulence, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s safest bet for running mate in the upcoming presidential election remains his Vice President Jusuf Kalla. His chance, however, is now in the hands of the Constitutional Court. Concerns remain in the Freeport deal The divestment of Freeport will turn Rio Tinto’s human rights and environmental problem into Inalum’s problem. Both the government and Inalum need to treat the consequences of Freeport’s divestment with delicacy. Poultry lobbying ends in price fluctuation for consumers The lobbying efforts to protect small and medium poultry farms from direct competition with large poultry companies and severe price changes have resulted in fluctuating egg and broiler prices for consumers.
