The network of stakeholders includes the following actors: - Piemonte Region (Land Planning and Landscape Sector); - Province of Cuneo; - Municipalities (8 Municipalities of the pilot area); - The Mountain Unions “Alpi del Mare” and “Alpi Marittime”; - Italcementi SpA HeidelbergCement Group; - Trade associations at the provincial level; - Environmental associations (Legambiente); - Civil Society and citizens. The Mayors of Borgo San Dalmazzo and Valdieri shared with LAMORO info about the territory, development proposal idea and knowledge about past industrial settlement (mining and productive lines). Some information was also shared with Italcementi SpA. The Municipalities’ technical offices have been also involved. Anyway, for data collection it was necessary to involve stakeholders at 3 different administrative levels (regional, provincial and municipal). The major information of the pilot area has been processed on the basis of the Regional Landscape Plan (2017), the Regional Territorial Plan (2011), the Town Plans, the Provincial Territorial Plan (2005). 1.2 OVERVIEW OF THE REGION Table 1: Facts & Figures of the Pilot region Pilot region Valle Gesso e Val Vermenagna - Gesso Valley and Vermenagna Valley Country Italy Location Piedmont Region (NW Italy) Area (in sq. km) About 400 sq. km Inhabitants About 21.000 Page | 3 Borgo San Dalmazzo, Roccavione, Robilante, Roaschia, Valdieri, Municipalities Vernante, Limone Piemonte, Entracque Characteristics Flat and (mainly) mountainous The pilot region is characterized by the presence of many quarries and mines. The pilot area is located in the province of Cuneo, in the Piedmont region borders. Figure 1: The pilot area, in red the quarries and in yellow the pilot site. Page | 4 Figure 2: In red, you can see where the pilot is located in relation to Italy and Europe (the picture is catch up from the Geographic Catalogue of the Piemonte Region (Regional Authority). Page | 5 Figure 3: In blue you can see the pilot area in relation with the regional territory Page | 6 The pilot area is inserted in the Maritime Alps territory which embraces the part of the Alps between the Colle di Tenda (Tenda Pass) and the Colle della Maddalena (Maddalena Pass), including the three valleys that lie on the Italian side of the Maritime Alps: Vermenagna, Gesso, and Stura Valleys. To be more precise the right side of the Vermenagna Valley is in the Ligurian Alps, and the left side of the Stura Valley is in the southern Cozie. The pilot area includes two alpine valleys (Vermenagna and Gesso) and the municipality of Borgo San Dalmazzo. More precisely, the pilot area is identified as follows: - Valle Gesso – Gesso Valley (Municipalities: Entracque, Roaschia, Valdieri); - Valle Vermenagna – Vermenagna Valley (Municipalities: Roccavione, Robilante, Vernante, Limone Piemonte); - the flat and hill territory where the Municipality of Borgo San Dalmazzo is placed. Borgo San Dalmazzo Municipality is settled at end of the flat area and it’s the starting point of different alpine valleys: Gesso Valley, Vermenagna Valley and Stura Valley. Figure 4: The mountain valleys in the province of Cuneo Page | 7 Figure 5: The Municipalities borders (Borgo San Dalmazzo, Roccavione, Robilante, Roaschia, Valdieri, Vernante, Limone Piemonte, Entracque). This territory is characterized by a configuration of small villages with: low population density (lower than the national level), aged population, weak level of migratory dynamism, low prevalence of children under 14 years old (versus the total of the population). Families are small, the demographic dynamism is negative, both in the short both in the long term, and is affected by low birth rates that will impact on the short future. An aggravating factor is the level of education, since the lack of young graduates’ people is alarming. The number of pupils is shocking and it is relevant for a situation of a demographic shock in short term. Moreover, the houses not occupied for various reasons are very numerous. Commercial Structures (shops) are fragmented. The number of public concerns per inhabitant are undersized compared to the territorial surfaces. Tourism also does not constitute an element of strength for these areas (except for the Municipality of Limone Piemonte), in spite of the increasing number of holiday’s homes. From the analysis of wealth, production and services provided, the number of bank branches and money deposits are very low, as well as services to individuals and businesses. Also, agriculture does not seem playing an alternative role in the local development (the use of the soil is low in comparison to the total area). there are few major economic contributors and in the fragmented partition of the production structure there are employees with low income levels. It’s the core zone of the Nature Park of the Maritime Alps . The park is one of the largest protected area in Piedmont and it touches the municipalities of Aisone, Entracque, Roaschia, Valdieri e

The Decision support system: Gesso and Vermenagna valleys Picture by Parco Naturali Alpi Marittime Short description The pilot area Gesso and Vermenagna valleys is located in the south west of Italy, Piedmont Region, Cuneo Province, close to the French border. About 32.000 ha are situated in protected areas (parks or Nature 2000 sites). Maritime Alps Natural Park and Nature 2000 site Maritime Alps are the most important protected areas of the pilot area. The main land uses are forests (42%) and pastures (33%). The main forest types are the European beech forests (11.500 ha) and the chestnut forests (2.700 ha). The principal renewable energy actually used is hydropower. The local economy is based on tourism and secondarily on agriculture and forestry. In order to analyse trade-off between energy production and ecosystem services valorisation, the following approach is applied: 1) Input data (knowledge of current renewable energies development): - Basic data collection (basic geographic data, existing power plants…) - Local experts identification (chosen by their expertise on ecosystem services and/or renewable energy and their knowledge of the local context) - Questionnaire survey in which the local experts evaluating the potential effects of renewable energy development on ecosystem services and local actual development 2) Output data (Decision Support System): - Definition of current renewable energies development - Study of perceived effects of renewable energies development 2 - Social network analysis of the professional relationships between local stakeholders - Total Economic Value maps Several scenarios of production and ecosystem valorisation by means of r.green.biomass and r.green.hydro tools. 3) Stakeholders and local community involving: - Round tables and meetings Link(s) to further information Software (r.green.biomass, r.green.hydro, r.green).

In 25 this paper, we conducted a systematic revision of the Troglohyphantes species of the Italian Alps, 26 with a special focus on the Lucifuga complex, including the description of two new species (T. 27 lucifer n. sp. and T. apenninicus n. sp). In addition, we provided new diagnostic drawings of the 28 holotype of T. henroti (Henroti complex) and established three new synonymies within the genus. 29 The molecular analysis of the animal DNA barcode confirms the validity of this method of 30 identification of the Alpine Troglohyphantes and provides additional support for the morphology- 31 based species complexes. Finally, we revised the known distribution range of additional 32 Troglohyphantes species, as well as other poorly known alpine cave-dwelling spiders.

  • Dalla Mobilità All'emigrazione. Il Caso Del Piemonte Sud-Occidentale
Dalla mobilità all'emigrazione.

Abstract: A new subspecies of Papilio alexanor Esper from Val Gesso (Cuneo Province), Italian Maritime Alps, is described and named radighierii. Some notes about its biology and ecology are given. Introduction The presence and distribution of Papilio alexanor Esper in Italy have not been modified from 1927 until today, except for its confirmed presence in Sicily (Henricksen , 1981) and the Italian Maritime Alps (Balletto & Toso, 1976). Verity (1947) had reported the species in Sicily (Nizza di Sicilia), Calabria (S. Luca) and the oriental Maritime Alps. During some investigations into the Italian Papilionidae the authors, especially because of indications and the kind cooperation of Elvio Córtese and Camillo Forte , put together a significant number of specimens collected in Val Gesso (Cuneo Province) and made observations about their larval and imaginal stages. The results of the morphological analysis compared with those obtained from the nominal subspecies and P.

WMO/GWP Associated Programme on Flood Management ITALY: PIEMONTE REGION METEO-HYDROLOGICAL ALERT AND REAL-TIME FLOOD FORECASTING SYSTEM D. Rabuffetti, S. Barbero1 Abstract. Information is provided on the approach and experience in flood management in the Piemonte Region. Actual practices comprise mainly: (i) the structural mitigation of floods; and (ii) non-structural safety measures subdivided into land use planning and emergency plan activation through hydrometeorological forecasting and the development of an Alert System for flood forecasting and warning. Of particular interest is the comprehensive description of the hazard map developed to establish the interaction between human activities, river and hill slope dynamics, of the risk scenario identification as well as of the Information System for Operational Flood Forecasting 1. Location The Piedmont Region, located in the northwestern part of Italy, is a predominantly alpine region covering 25,000 km2. It is situated on the Padana plain and bordered on three sides by mountain chains covering 73% of its territory. The entire area drains to the Po River. The Upper Po River basin is characterized by a number of fast responding boulder-lined tributaries from the Alps (North and West) and Appenines (South). The mid Po River is moderately flat and contains wide floodplains and a meandering cobbled and sandy riverbed. The mountainous part of the territory is mainly natural and covered by forest and the pastures have been decreasing for the past decades. The lower areas are mainly used for agriculture and the land-use patterns have not changed significantly. The border between mountain and lowlands, as well as the major valleys, are more populated and industrially developed.
