Numerous societies, the argument goes, have a seemingly innate need to purge sins via an innocent victim. The killing of this victim constitutes the core of sacrifice traditions; explaining the efficacy of these rites outlines in turn the inner workings of all sacrifices, if not all rituals. I do not believe, however, that the enigmatic figure of the scapegoat can support a universal theory of sacrifice, especially if the general term “scapegoat” turns out refer to a variety of rituals with very different goals. Rene Girard’s extremely influential theory of the scapegoat includes a biological basis for the importance of the figure (Girard, 1977). According to Girard, humans are naturally aggressive, a la Konrad Lorenz. This innate aggression was channeled into an unending series of attacks and counterattacks during the earliest periods of history. A better outlet for aggression was to find a scapegoat whose death would stop the cycle of retribution (p. 2). For Girard, Oedipus was a human scapegoat, placing this model 2 at the center of Greek culture in addition to Biblical religious traditions (p. 72). Jonathan Smith’s observations on Girard’s model in “The Domestication of Sacrifice” are both simple and devastating (1987). -

Shivalik Elephant Reserve: Uttarakhand drishtiias.com/printpdf/shivalik-elephant-reserve-uttarakhand Why in News The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has asked the Uttarakhand government to consider avoiding sensitive areas of the Shivalik Elephant Reserve while exploring land suitable to use for the expansion of Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport. Key Points Background: The area proposed for the expansion, is a part of the Shivalik Elephant Reserve and it falls within a 10-km radius of Rajaji National Park. Protests: Children and social activists have tied protective strings around the trees marked to be cut, similar to the Chipko movement of the 1970s, when villagers in Chamoli hugged trees to stop contractors from felling them. Concerns: The expansion will threaten hundreds of species of fauna in Thano (near Rajaji National Park) and the elephant corridor nearby. The State also falls in seismic Zone IV and V, as per the Earthquake Zoning Map, and uprooting Thano will lead to soil erosion, a factor that exacerbated the 2013 Kedarnath floods, endangering countless lives. Earlier, social activists had criticised Chardham Pariyojana on environmental grounds. It is a programme taken up by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for connectivity improvement for Chardham (Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri) in Uttrakhand. Recently, the Supreme Court upheld the 2011 order of the Madras High Court (HC) on the Nilgiris elephant corridor, affirming the right of passage of the animals and the closure of resorts in the area. 1/3 Shivalik Elephant Reserve: It was notified in 2002 under the ‘Project Elephant’. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity in the world.[1][2] It is sometimes called the Great Escarpment of India.[3] The range runs north to south along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau, and separates the plateau from a narrow coastal plain, called Konkan, along the Arabian Sea. A total of thirty nine properties including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and reserve forests were designated as world heritage sites - twenty in Kerala, ten in Karnataka, five in Tamil Nadu and four in Maharashtra.[4][5] The range starts near the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra, south of the Tapti river, and runs approximately 1,600 km (990 mi) through the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu ending at Kanyakumari, at the southern tip of India. -

Sukumar Dr. N. Baskaran Mr. Narendra Babu Mr. A. Madhusudan and Ms Archana Prasad 2 I. INTRODUCTION A synchronized Elephant Census was carried out in May 2005 by the southern states with the coordination of Project Elephant, Government of India. Field data were collected between 5th and 7th May 2005 in all the four southern states - Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. At the request of the Chief Wildlife Warden, Karnataka, the Asian Elephant Research and Conservation Centre took on the task of analyzing the data for various forest divisions in the state and producing this report. Project Elephant Directorate recommended that two methods, a direct method (random block count) and an indirect method (dung count through line transects – Barnes & Jenson, 1987) be used for elephant density and population estimation, and a waterhole count for population structure as was done during the census of 2002. A one-day workshop on elephant census techniques was organized during December 2004 at Bandipur Tiger Reserve, for officers from all the Elephant Ranges of India by the Project Elephant Directorate with the help of CITES/MIKE South Asia and the Asian Elephant Research and Conservation Centre. During the workshop, detailed discussions took place on the relevance of various existing census methods, the rationale behind them and the relevance of the methods chosen. -
