  • Trip to New York George Crooks and Joe Ryen
Henry Morris Report – Trip to New York George Crooks and Joe Ryen After obtaining the grant from the Henry Morris Memorial Trust, we flew out to New York on the 18th of July. We stayed with relatives just north of the city for a couple days and spent this time relaxing and visiting sights around the local area. This portion of the trip was funded by ourselves. However, on the Sunday, we took a day trip into New York City and used the funds provided to pay for bus fares into the city, and expenses whilst there. Later on in the week we did another trip into the city, where we stayed in an apartment provided by relatives for a night, and visited family in Princeton where we also stayed for a night. We then returned to the city and spent another night in the apartment, before returning to family north of the city. During this time, the grant provided by the trust covered all travel expenses. The money also allowed us to see major engineering sights around the city and covered the small living expenses that we had for the few days. USS Intrepid: During our day trip into New York City on the Sunday 21st July, we visited the United States Intrepid, a disused aircraft carrier turned museum. The cost of this was $33 per person, and allowed us access to the huge aircraft carrier and attached submarine. The USS Intrepid first served in the second world war and continued to be used in various locations for several decades.

The first consists of observations and reflections on some of New York City's many war memorials, ranging from one commemorating the Revolutionary War to one dedicated this past year for the Korean War. What becomes evident within the wide range of memorials, is the degree to which they can be used to gauge the political sentiment and aspirations of previous epochs. In the second section I examine the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum of Patriotism, as a case study of how a contemporary memorial functions within and propagates a particular ideological agenda. This "living" memoriaVmuseum works as a reminder of past threats to nationhood, and of the necessity to retain the state military apparatus to prevent future aggressions.

Through cutting, drilling, stitching and melting found materials, Clottey’s sculptural installations are bold assemblages that act as a means of inquiry into questions of form and history. As the founder of Ghana’s GoLokal performance collective, Clottey sees art as a way to transform society.
