    The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, March 3, 2021 * The Boston Globe How Nick Pivetta is embracing a fresh start with the Red Sox Peter Abraham FORT MYERS, Fla. — Nick and Kristen Pivetta have been nomads for some time, unable to return to their native Canada because of strict pandemic protocols regarding crossing the border from the United States. “We haven’t been home in almost two years,” said Nick, a righthander who was traded to the Red Sox last summer. “So we packed up and came here.” Home is now a rented condo a short drive from JetBlue Park. They arrived in October for what in every way has been a fresh start. Pivetta, 28, spent nearly five years with the Philadelphia Phillies. He made his major league debut with the team in 2017, won his first game a few weeks later, and struck out 13 Cardinals one memorable night in 2018. But he welcomed the trade to Boston. It was time. “I can’t speak on behalf of the Phillies. But I don’t feel they valued me as a starter anymore,” Pivetta said. “I was ready for some new scenery. It was best for both parties.” That was easily confirmed, a Phillies official saying the team felt Pivetta was more confident in his abilities than a career 5.40 earned run average suggested he should be. They recognized his talent but were frustrated by his stubbornness. The Red Sox took a chance on the talent, trading relievers Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman for Pivetta and righthander Connor Seabold.

The 28-man roster is made up of 15 pitchers and 13 position players currently not on an MLB 40-man roster, and features six former national team alumni and seven of the MLB Pipeline top-100 prospects. The U.S. will begin the WBSC Premier12™ in Guadalajara, Mexico, from November 2-4 as a member of Group A with the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the Netherlands. The top two nations from Group A will advance to the Super Round in Tokyo from November 11-16. The tournament is the first opportunity for Team USA to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. A pair of World Series ring holders, closer Brandon Workman and middle innings reliever Heath Hembree, were dealt to the Phillies — along with cash and either a player to be named or cash consideration — on Friday night. In exchange, the Sox received a pair of righthanders — Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold — with a chance to contribute as starters. The decision to deal away current contributors for a pair of pitchers who will report to Pawtucket gave a clear window into where the Red Sox are in their pursuit of a championship. Yet the backdrop against which the trade occurred offered its own form of evidence about the state of the team’s competitive ambitions. Ozuna became the first National League player to have a three-homer game at Fenway Park when his eighth-inning, three-run homer sailed over the batter’s eye and hit the elevated camera well below the center field video board. Per Statcast, the monstrous shot traveled a projected 437 feet and came off the bat with a 110.6-mph exit velocity. But it’s more impressive to point out that multiple players and media members who have witnessed more than a few games in Boston said they had not remembered a ball being hit to that spot. “Everyone was talking about it,” Braves top pitching prospect Ian Anderson said. “Some of the guys who have played here plenty of times said, ‘That’s the farthest ball I’ve ever seen hit here.’ Just the sound of it, you knew that thing was going a long way.” As the Braves secured their first series win against Boston since 2004, it appeared the story of the night would be Anderson, who allowed two runs over six innings while making just his second career start.

The ability to advance to such positions has not. Just 6 of 30 big league managerial jobs (20 percent) are occupied by people of color, while non-whites represent roughly 40 percent of the player pool. Yet there is evidence of a significant change to how the coaching pipeline operates, one that suggests a potentially more diverse group moving forward. For years, coaching staffs have had a measure of diversity but with only limited job mobility for non-white coaches. Many teams would hire Black and Latin ex-players as first base coaches — from 2015-20, 61 percent of first base coaches have been people of color — but then featured steadily diminishing representation at the more prominent (and typically better-paying) coaching positions. In many instances, first base coaches have remained locked into their positions for years rather than graduating into more prominent roles. There’s been a narrowing funnel, with less diversity among third base coaches, hitting coaches, bench coaches, and ultimately managers. “There have been a lot of challenges helping individuals to get out of kind of getting pigeon-holed or typecast as the first base coach when they have skills to do more,” said Tyrone Brooks, MLB’s senior director of the front office and field staff diversity pipeline program. Frequently, coaches with managerial aspirations would see their paths stall.
