A Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Programme in Sunway Scholarship recipient, Amelia hopes the diversity of the BSc (Hons) Psychology programme will give her the College in 2015, Gabriel ability to help people with mental illnesses. has embraced the business world by using the skills he acquired in the programme. Majoring in Marketing and International Trade, Gabriel entered VU upon completing the Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) in Sunway College. For Gabriel, the best bits of being in VU were the educators; as they were fun, engaging and set a high benchmark for teaching. When the subject coordinator from VU Melbourne came to College to conduct lectures and tutorial classes, students like Gabriel got to experience different teaching methods and content delivery.

The challenge for him in VU was learning to juggle studies, extra-curricular activities and a social life. Active in the Victoria University Business Club (VUBC) for five semesters, Gabriel became President in his th5 semester. Finding VUBC an ideal platform to put their knowledge into practice, Gabriel and his team organised VU Night in for the first time, launched VU@Sunway varsity jacket and did fundraising.

His internship exposure in Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur had him conducting research, competitive analysis, advertising and gaining insights into television commercials and print ads as he worked on Maxis – SME & Corporate Sector. When given the opportunity to live in Melbourne as part of the VU Exchange programme, Gabriel gained an international perspective on life. By becoming a member of the committee of Corporate Insight & Empowerment by Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia (MASCA), he leveraged on this to gain exposure to other committees and companies in Melbourne whilst trying new experiences like skiing at Mt Buller, camping at Wilson Promontory National Park, hiking to the peak of Mt Oberon, driving the Great Ocean Road, cliff jumping at Blairgowrie Jumping Rock and scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef.

Adopting a “not giving up” attitude from his days in VU, Gabriel has learnt to move forward in life as he believes academics alone does not prepare a graduate for the working world. Knowing how to prioritise assignments in VU is similar to prioritising workloads as giving the best at work happens when doing things one at a time. Learning how to say no has also been a good work ethic as it helps with work priorities.

Having returned to VUBC for a mentoring stint, Gabriel believes knowledge and experiences need to be passed Amelia with her mother onto the next batch. He hopes this sharing will act to guide those setting out on their career paths.

Students awarded the Certificate of Appreciation

VC Subject Award recipients with Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Dr Elizabeth Lee and Cheng Mien Wee

The Foundation in Arts (FIA) and Foundation in Science and Technology (FIST) programmes recently celebrated the completion of the one-year educational journey experienced by a total of 424 students. In this graduating cohort, 257 deserving students were awarded scholarships under the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF).

The JCF scholarships will enable the students to complete their studies via various programmes offered by Sunway College and Sunway University. Awarded a full scholarship under the Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship, FIA student representative Jonathan Khoo Teng Ee urged his fellow graduates to treasure the moments they spent in FIA. He also took this opportunity to thank the lecturers on behalf of the graduating cohort in his speech. Jonathan said, “Thank you for being there to guide us on our journey and being there to teach us that sometimes we may fail Tung Jean San with Dr Elizabeth Lee Chan Xian Lynn and her parents but we still need to muster up the courage to stand up and succeed. This programme has opened our eyes to the world in which we live in and made us understand our role in making it a better place.”

Student representative for FIST programme, 19-year old Amelia Neo You Qi thanked the lecturers for sparking Jordan Kee Zheng Feng with Professor Graeme Wilkinson change in the FIST students as their encouragement helped her fellow graduates and herself to challenge the impossible. A recipient of the Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship and proud to be part of the Sunway Foundation Programme family, Amelia shared that the assignments with presentations and group projects helped her to develop a better understanding of people from different backgrounds. These projects propelled her to open up, ask questions and learn to speak with confidence.

A former student of SMK Raja Mahadi in , 20 year-old Inthira Rajan found the FIST programme challenging as she had to frequently work on multiple projects with overlapping deadlines. Not missing any of her deadlines, Inthira also worked part-time during her time in the FIST programme. Having learnt the lesson of persevering in her studies, Inthira is Qarzana Banu and her parents now furthering her studies in BSc (Hons) Psychology at Sunway University.

Present at the graduation ceremony were Dr Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director of Sunway Education Group and Sunway University; Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Vice-Chancellor; Professor Pua Eng Chong, Deputy Vice-Chancellor; Professor Hew Gill, Associate Provost (Student Experience), Sunway University; Cheng Mien Wee, Director of Pre-University Studies, and Ruma Lopes, Assistant Director of Pre-University Studies and Director of Sunway Foundation Programme, Sunway College.

The FIA and FIST graduating cohort were also presented with Certificates of Academic Excellence which recognises their efforts in maintaining excellent results throughout their one-year FIA or FIST programme. FIA, A PATHWAY TO FINANCE EDUCATOR WITH A HEART Wanting to major in finance while being able to try out taxation and business law, Jonathan Khoo Teng Ee from Subang Jaya is taking a break after completing the one-year Foundation in Arts (FIA) programme at Sunway College. To gain an edge in terms of employability in the future, Jonathan is currently searching for certified language classes to take and hopes to earn some extra pocket money before starting his university life.

Having always been interested in investments and management of funds, the FIA has allowed Jonathan to “have a taste” of electives like microeconomics, macroeconomics, and introduction to finance. Awarded a Jeffrey Cheah Special Entrance Scholarship for his studies, Jonathan joined the Foundation in Arts (FIA) programme in March 2017.

For Jonathan, coordinating group assignments was the worst experience as he had to work with different types of people who sometimes took their FIA coursework very lightly. He had to learn to guide his team through their coursework for he was often assigned the task of being the capable group leader. However, the one year spent in Sunway has been very comfortable as the facilities provided in the FIA has enabled Jonathan to bond and spend more time with his friends. Sharing that his time here has taught him how to deal with different types of people, Jonathan believes the FIA has helped him grow his confidence and public speaking skills.

Academically, the enrichment subjects in FIA has enabled Jonathan to question the way he thinks and to develop stronger analytical skills when it comes to problem solving. Advising future students to challenge Jason in one of the villages Jason with Nepalese children themselves, not to take things lightly, to be confident and to not lose sight of what they wish to achieve, Sunway has truly been an eye-opening experience for Jonathan. He is keen to carry out further volunteer work with Kechara Soup Kitchen as he had the opportunity to help feed the people living on the streets whilst Having formerly taught the Malay language in the FIA. to Tamil speaking students in a remove class, Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) lead lecturer With the option to pursue Financial Economics or Financial Analysis in Sunway University beginning August for Accounting and Finance ATAR Year 12 Jason 2018, Jonathan is using this time to conduct research into other pathways and available scholarships that will Soh Chiaw Ker began to grasp the impact of enable him to study in the United Kingdom. Believing that confidence is key when starting something new, poverty and illiteracy on a child’s future. Jonathan intends to make his parents proud of his achievements and hopes to repay his parents for their efforts in raising him. Wanting to give back to underprivileged communities, Jason recently went on a 10- day journey to Nepal during the Chinese New Year festivities. Welcomed at the Kathmandu airport by four Nepalese community leaders, four Malaysians including Jason visited five locations during this 10-day trip. To reach the five locations, they had to hike through treacherous mountainous areas, trek through icy cold rivers and drive their 4WD on perilous roads with cliff A typical cooking session on the mountains of Nepal edges, some 1,000 meters above sea level.

Intending to help meet the needs of the village leaders and communities, three of these communities were given a solar light to avoid complete darkness at night. This trip also involved the refurbishment of one of the buildings in the five locations, which had no windows or carpets, or even toilets. A retaining wall was built for one of the leaders of the five locations in a remote valley where landslides have occurred.

Finding the trip rigorous, nerve wrecking yet extremely fulfilling, Jason experienced many firsts during the trip. He witnessed a rooster being slaughtered live, taking a bath in public, sleeping on hard cement floors during cold winter nights, playing ice breaker games plus taking selfies with the Nepalese youths and children. Playing guitar at a sing-along session next to a bonfire with the villagers at night, eating buffalo meat, writing a letter in Nepalese with the help of a translator and having deep, meaningful conversations with the Nepalese people were some of the activities he remembered of his 10 days in Nepal.

For Jason, Nepal is “the most underrated, magnificent destination visited. The mountain-ringed country borders China to the north and India to the south, boasting eight of the world’s 10 highest peaks. Ironically, it is one of the poorest nations in the world. The terrain is so dangerous that land development has been slow, resulting in poverty and subsistence living. Almost a third of the population lives below the poverty line, and the majority are illiterate.”

Six days into their journey in Nepal, Jason realised one of their Nepalese community leaders, Khim wore the same clothes every day with no complaints or signs of dissatisfaction. Saddened by this and seeing the 21-year old was about his size, Jason gave Khim his extra clothing, winter gear and a back pack. This helped Jason to realise that although we cannot help everyone, but everyone can help someone.

Hoping to share these experiences with his students, Jason would like his students to look beyond their university and career pathways. By being aware they are incredibly fortunate to receive a quality education, compared to those who do not have these privileges; this educator with heart wishes his students will consider contributing back to society, for starting now is not too late.

212 EXEMPLARY SCHOLARS #PRESSFORPROGRESS

Bringing together a short yet powerful presentation on March 8, the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) programme students taking English classes set out to ‘#PRESSFORPROGRESS’. For the first time ever in AUSMAT, Director of AUSMAT Vanitha Satchithanadan willingly dipped her rubber gloved hands into purple paint, the colour picked in celebration of International Women’s Day. She stamped her palms onto the ‘#PRESSFORPROGRESS’ purple cardboard to commence the celebration. The students had put together five short and effective presentations to highlight the existence of gender inequality on a global scale.

With only two to three weeks to prepare for International Women’s Day (IWD), the presenters surprised all who attended with a student-designed laminated postcard and a packet of brownies each, which were personally made by an AUSMAT staff member. The opening three acts included a sports brand video commentary, a ballet recital and a music video critique. The fourth act differed from the other three acts as it involved a male perspective. During this fourth presentation, two Pang Chuan Shwu Wong Jun Ren Heng Jing Sheng Tan Huey Ming male students spoke of being aware of the inequalities faced by women.
