Return by Thu., Sep. 30, 2021 RECAP: Das Awksht Fescht by Marty Hegyi (‘69, ‘07, ‘17) Fri.-Sun., Aug. 06-08 | Das Awkscht Fescht is held every August on the grounds of Macungie Memorial Park in Macungie, PA. This is a 3-day festival featuring antique cars, food trucks, games for children, an automotive flea mar- ket, a used car corral, and live music from a variety of local bands. The cars must be at least 25 years old, and this year that included all makes and models 1996 or older. On Sun., Aug. 08, AACC was responsible for parking all the Corvettes on the show field. We had our club tent set up displaying our AACC banner. Club members Dave Hornung, Linda Train- er, Bruce and Elizabeth Garnto, Tim Pummer, and Marty and Laura Hegyi assisted with parking. John Kostick and Jeff and Lisa Gontarek distributed our fall show flyers to all Corvette and GM vehicles on display. Several Corvette owners visited the tent and inquired about our show or requested membership information. 2022 will be the 59th year for Das Awksht Fescht, when cars 1997 and older are eligible to participate.

The Little Car that Did Nothing Right: the 1972 Lordstown Assembly Strike, the Chevrolet Vega, and the Unraveling of Growth Economics Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By By Joseph A. Arena, B.A. History, Graduate Program The Ohio State University 2009 Thesis Committee Kevin Boyle, Advisor Paula Baker Mansel Blackford Copyright by Joseph A. Arena 2009 Abstract In March 1972, the United Automobile Workers (UAW) struck for eighteen days at the General Motors (GM) assembly complex in Lordstown, Ohio. Previous historical studies have focused on the origins of labor-management conflict at the factory. Drawing upon documents from the UAW’s archives, the business press, and automotive industry trade publications, this thesis contextualizes the strike by linking shop floor conditions with GM’s business strategy, the Nixon administration’s economic policy, and working class life in the Mahoning Valley. The UAW and GM saw the Chevrolet Vega, manufactured at Lordstown, as the domestic industry’s best response to import competition. But bureaucratic imperatives, especially within GM’s management structure, encouraged a series of confrontations between the company and union that culminated in the strike and undermined the Vega’s viability. The thesis expands our understanding of an iconic moment in American labor history and illuminates the ongoing problems confronting the U.S. automobile industry. ii Dedicated to My Mother and Father iii Acknowledgements No historian works alone. The staffs of the Ohio State University Libraries and the State of Ohio Historical Society assisted in procuring materials.

The people I worked with made it a pleasure to go to work. Their technical accomplishments were outstanding and helped make GM, the auto industry, and the world a better place. Their accomplishments have been documented in “The GMR-GM R&D Fuels and Lubricants Department – Its History and Accomplishment,” SAE Paper 2016-01- 0176, April 4, 2015, and rewarded with the 2017 SAE Arnold W. Siegel Humanitarian Award. In addition to their accomplishments, the people, and others to whom my position gave me access, provided many memorable and often humorous stories that are the basis for this memoir.

CHEVROLETTER July 2020 Vol 2020 Issue 7.1 Director’s Report April 2020 Is that a light I see at the end of the tunnel or is it another train heading for us? Right now it is good to be from New York…..can’t always say that! I am beginning to see the signs of vehicular activity starting as we enter phase 4 of our recovery. Carlisle has already had one of their swap meets and are planning to finish out their 2020 schedule. The Pennsylvania Department of Health filed a suit against Carlisle Events for not following the pandemic guidelines, a settlement was reached and the event went on. I see cruise nights are back and seem to be our primary outlet for showing our vehicles. I mention a few popular locations of cruises in the schedule of events, I am sure there are many more. I have still not heard from the town of Oyster Bay so I assume we will not be having our July meeting. I would hope town would be up and running by our August meeting but you never know. It was really great meeting at Mike’s shop this past month, I know everyone was glad to get out and talk cars. Thanks again to Mike for the open house and the yummy pizza. Just wondering how people feel about starting up out first Thursday of the month breakfasts? I will give the diner a call and see how they are handling the covid19 restrictions. I have missed my monthly allotment of grease and cholesterol.
