RECAP: Das Awksht Fescht by Marty Hegyi (‘69, ‘07, ‘17) Fri.-Sun., Aug. 06-08 | Das Awkscht Fescht is held every August on the grounds of Macungie Memorial Park in Macungie, PA. This is a 3-day festival featuring antique cars, food trucks, games for children, an automotive flea mar- ket, a used car corral, and live music from a variety of local bands. The cars must be at least 25 years old, and this year that included all makes and models 1996 or older. On Sun., Aug. 08, AACC was responsible for parking all the Corvettes on the show field. We had our club tent set up displaying our AACC banner. Club members Dave Hornung, Linda Train- er, Bruce and Elizabeth Garnto, Tim Pummer, and Marty and Laura Hegyi assisted with parking. John Kostick and Jeff and Lisa Gontarek distributed our fall show flyers to all Corvette and GM vehicles on display. Several Corvette owners visited the tent and inquired about our show or requested membership information. 2022 will be the 59th year for Das Awksht Fescht, when cars 1997 and older are eligible to participate. RECAP: Corvettes at Carlisle by Marty Hegyi (‘69, ‘07, ‘17) Thu.-Sat., Aug. 26-28 | Another Corvettes at Carlisle Event is in the books, and what a fantastic show it was. The weather was hot and humid as it usually is at the end of Au- gust, but at least we had (almost) no rain for all three days.

Jim Flader and David Hausman led a caravan of 10 Corvettes to the Carlisle Fairgrounds at sunrise Thursday morning. AACC had a 20’ x 20’ tent in a new location this year with cold water and light snacks available for all members. In total, we had a record 36 cars preregistered and close to 90 members in attendance. Congratulations to Noel and Alice Peters for receiving a Celebrity Choice award for their beautiful 1965 Glen Green Corvette Coupe.

Some of the highlights of this year’s show included a great array of 1971 C3s as part of the 50th anniversary display and the 25th anniversary display of the 1996 Corvette Grand Sport.

And speaking of anniversaries, the Garntos and Cannillos surprised Laura and I with a delicious sheet cake that we shared with everyone, to celebrate our 30th consecutive year of attending Corvettes at Carlisle. On Thursday evening we had a wonderful group dinner at the Harvest Seasonal Grill and Wine Bar in Harrisburg, PA, which was attended by 33 members. On Friday there was a “Salute to Law Enforcement” with a parade of Corvette owners who work in law en- forcement, led by state and regional police vehicles. And on Saturday, there was a special ceremony on the main stage to honor all first responders.

New this year was a huge 36’ x 24’ American flag display suspended by two large cranes on Saturday at the top of the hill, overlooking the Fairgrounds. Everyone was invited to drive their cars to the top of the hill and park in front of the Flag for an amazing photo op.

The event ended with the annual Corvette parade and downtown party featuring hundreds of Corvettes and a live dance band in the center of Carlisle. Several AACC members participated in the parade this year. A good time was had by all. Page 7 AllentownCorvetteClub.org Events ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 28, Iss. 9 | September 2021

C8 Average Transaction Tops $82k by Sam McEachern (GMAuthority.com) Thu., Aug. 05 | The average transaction price of a C8 Corvette Stingray topped $82,000 in the second quarter of 2021, setting a new record high for the nameplate. According to data from Cox Automotive, the average price of a C8 Corvette Stingray in Q2 was $82,489. The mid-engine sports car has a base price of $60,995, while the hardtop con- vertible model is priced from $68,495. The vehicle’s high ATP suggests most customers are buying the vehicle with a relatively pricy list of options on it. Dealers are also charging full price or more for the C8 Corvette Stingray due to high demand and lower-than-usual production output throughout 2021.

Parts shortages caused brief shutdowns at the GM Bowling Green Assembly plant in Kentucky earlier in the year, but have returned to normal levels in recent weeks. Cox Automotive notes C8 Corvette production has been in“ fits and starts,” in Q2, with quarterly sales rising 224 percent to 7,971 units. The publication notes this is the highest quarterly sales figured for the Corvette nameplate since 2016.

Tony Johnson, director of car and crossover marketing for Chevy, told GM Authority in June the automaker is “not even close,” to meeting demand for the C8 Corvette Stingray. Johnson said the company has an overwhelming amount of new sold orders for the vehicle at the moment, though he stopped short of sharing an exact figure.

We have more orders than we can handle,” Johnson said. “I can’t give you a number (on how many orders we’ve re- ceived), but I can tell you it’s significant.

“We’re working on meeting that demand,” he added. “We know there’s a lot of customers who really, really are excit- ed to get their hands on a Corvette.” . . .

Buy Reggie Jackson’s 1961 Corvette by Mitch Talley (CorvetteBlogger.com) Fri., Aug. 07 | I’ve been a New York Yankees fan for about as long as I’ve been a Corvette enthusiast– in other words, ever since I can remember.

That’s why my ears really perked up when I read about this 1961 Corvette convertible owned by Yankees legend Reg- gie Jackson since 2005 but now up for sale on [bringatrailer.com]. The high bid has reached $35,500 with five days left in the auction.

This C1, originally sold new in California, is one of 16 classics being offered on dealer consignment on Bring a Trailer as part of the Mohr Imports Monterrey Collection Sale during Monterrey Car Week.

The 1961 Corvette featured a new rear end that foreshadowed the 1963 inspired by GM design chief Bill Mitchell’s XP -700 show car.

This Ermine White Corvette features black vinyl upholstery and has a numbers-matching 283/270 horsepower V8 en- gine with dual four-barrel carburetors, finned valve covers, a generator, an aluminum radiator, and chrome treat- (Continued on page 15) Page 15 AllentownCorvetteClub.org News ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 28, Iss. 9 | September 2021

(Continued from page 14) ments for the air cleaner housing and ignition cover. It’s paired with a four-speed manual transmission.

The car features a push-button Wonderbar AM radio, an analog clock, a cigarette lighter, lap belts, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and 15-inch wheels with spinner-style covers.

The odometer shows 36,000 miles though Mr. Jackson has driven it just 2,500 miles in his 16 years of ownership.

While the car appears to be in excellent condition overall, a photo does show a small tear in the black convertible top.

You may remember that less than a year after retiring from Major League Baseball, Jackson suffered a heartbreaking loss in a fire on August 4, 1988 that destroyed a warehouse in Berkeley, California along with 35 of his vintage cars stored there and valued at more than $3 million.

Destroyed was the first car in his collection, a 1940 Chevrolet he had bought in 1971 for $300 and a TV set, as well as a 1983 Porsche Targa he received from the California Angels after capturing the American League home run title.

How GM Handles C8 Repairs by Jonathan Lopez (GMAuthority.com) Sat., Aug. 07 | The C8 Corvette Stingray is a special vehicle for Chevrolet, introducing the first-ever production mid- engine platform in the history of Chevy Corvette nameplate. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the way in which handles C8 Corvette Stingray structural repairs and parts distribution is also somewhat special.

As GM Authority reported previously, only authorized collision repair centers can performance structural repairs on the new C8 Corvette Stingray, per a post made to GM TechLink.

Structural repairs must be made by certified GM Collision Repair Network (CRN) or Cadillac Aluminum Repair Network (CARN) shops,” reads the TechLink article.“ Non-certified shops will not be permitted to receive the restricted structur- al part numbers from a GM dealership. The majority of the structural frame components for the C8 Corvette will be put on parts restriction.”

(Continued on page 16) Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 16 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 28, Iss. 9 | September 2021 News

C8 Repairs Continued...

(Continued from page 15)

By restricting the sale of key structural components, General Motors is essentially limiting where C8 Corvette Stingray customers can have their sports car serviced when it comes to major structural repairs. While some may consider this restrictive, the C8 Corvette Stingray’s aluminum frame makes it difficult to perform certain structural repairs. As it stands, this restrictive repair practice is somewhat common among mid-engine aluminum-frame sports cars.

What’s more, GM dealers with body shops that are seeking to become a part of the GM Collision Repair Network can apply to do so. Repairs require a fixture bench to complete.

Additionally, repairs require handing over the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), which suggests that General Motors is keeping tabs on which C8 Corvette Stingrays have been in severe collisions.

Road America: Two Podiums, On to Le Mans by Corvette Racing Sun., Aug. 08 | Corvette Racing finished second and third in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) category of the IMSA Weather- Tech SportsCar Championship on Sunday at Road America[,] as the program now heads across the Atlantic Ocean for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

GTLM championship leaders Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor finished second in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM C8.R, just ahead of Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy in the No. 4 mid-engine Corvette. Shortly after the race, all focus turned to Le Mans with the team traveling over in the coming days with the Test Day set for Aug. 15.

Sunday’s race marked Corvette Racing’s 20th event at Road America, and early on the two C8.Rs were in control. Taylor and Tandy ran 1-2 during the opening minutes. An early-race call to take fuel and tires just 22 minutes in gave the No. 4 Corvette the advantage during the opening hour. Running second, Tandy took fuel and fresh Michelin tires just ahead of a full-course caution period.

Once the GT pits opened for stops, the No. 3 Corvette side switched to Garcia along with a full fuel fill and fresh tires. Meanwhile, Tandy remained in the No. 4 C8.R and took just enough fuel to top off the tank to move from third to first ahead of the restart at the 40-minute mark.

Tandy continued his good work in traffic on the restart to move five seconds ahead of Garcia before a second full- course caution 20 minutes later. Tandy and Garcia both stayed in with the No. 4 C8.R retaining an advantage.

Garcia stopped the No. 3 Corvette for more fuel and tires with 75 minutes left with the No. 4 coming in less than 15 minutes later for a driver change to Milner. Disaster struck, though, as the car’s wheels spun while on the airjacks. Race

(Continued from page 16) officials assessed the No. 4 C8.R a drive-through penalty for the infraction.

Meanwhile, Garcia set out to pressure Matt Campbell in the No. 79 entry late but the pace and gap was too much to overcome.

Bloomington Gold Charlotte: Oct. 1-2 by Steve Burns (CorvetteBlogger.com) Thu., Aug. 19 | Boy, it sure is fantastic having car shows back on the calendar once again. If you missed out on this year’s Bloomington Gold event in Indianapolis, you’ve got another shot coming up in about a month and a half. Bloom- ington Gold Charlotte is ramping up and will take place October 1st and 2nd at the Hendrick Motorsport complex in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In a recent email blast, the Bloomington team stated that registration for Gold Certification is near a record high. That means if you want to get your car Gold Certified yet this year, it’s time to get moving and register now.

In addition to the usual Survivor, Gold, and Benchmark judging there are plenty more reasons to make the trek to Char- lotte. Attendees will be able to tour the sprawling Hendrick Heritage Center where some of the rarest and most expen- sive Corvettes currently reside. Many Corvettes vendors will be offering their latest wares as well. Along those lines, you’ll be able to get your hands on the latest Bloomington Gold and National Corvette Museum apparel. In addition, several local vendors will be offering jewelry, clothing, and other items.

Attendees looking to explore the area can check out the nearby Charlotte Motor Speedway and the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Runner-Up in C8.R Le Mans Debut by Corvette Racing Sun., Aug. 22 | The mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette C8.R finished on the class podium in its 24 Hours of Le Mans debut Sunday with the trio of Antonio Garcia, Jordan Taylor and Nicky Catsburg placing second in the No. 63 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette C8.R.

The debut of the mid-engine racing Corvette came a year later than originally planned due to the global COVID-19 pan- demic. But the wait proved worth it with Corvette Racing showing its usual competitive spirit during its 21st race at Le Mans since 2000.

“Today’s second-place result in GTE Pro for the No. 63 Corvette C8.R and drivers Antonio Garcia, Jordan Taylor and Nicky Catsburg is a significant achievement as we debuted the mid-engine Corvette C8.R at Le Mans,” said Jim Camp- bell, Chevrolet U.S Vice President, Performance and Motorsports. “To be on the podium at Le Mans with the C8.R is very gratifying. It’s a testament to the hard work and determination of our Corvette production and racing teams.

“The support of Corvette owners and fans from around the world has been incredible,” Campbell added. “This race result is dedicated to our customers and supporters.”

While the No. 63 Corvette ran in contention for the entire race, the No. 64 C8.R of Tommy Milner, Nick Tandy and Alex- ander Sims seemingly ran into nothing but bad luck. It began on the roll-off from the grid when Milner was hit from behind by the eventual class-winning Ferrari at the beginning of the formation lap.

The contact broke part of the diffuser, but the No. 64 Corvette ran well early and even led in a wet start with Milner going to the fore. He and Tandy cycled through and kept the No. 64 C8.R in contention before the diffuser finally broke in the fifth hour shortly after Sims’ first stint.

It was the first of three visits to the garage for the No. 64 team, which also had to repair part of the gearbox, clutch and

On the No. 63 Corvette side of the garage, all three drivers drove double stints to open the race. Each of the trio led for a time as well as the race began to evolve into primarily a battle between Corvette and Ferrari, although five cars remained on the lead lap in GTE Pro at the halfway point.

Things began evolve into a two-car race into the final six hours between the No. 63 C8.R and No. 51 Ferrari. The Cor- vette team kept it close and was able to triple-stint its Michelin tires in the late going but couldn’t make up the neces- sary ground. The No. 63 Corvette did, however, complete the entire 24 hours without a change of brakes.

Corvette Racing returns to action in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship on Sept. 10-12 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif.

Corvette Racing’s Future at Le Mans by Keith Cornett (CorvetteBlogger.com) Sun., Aug. 22 | One of the reasons why General Motors has been unable to clearly define the future racing plans for both Cadillac and Corvette Racing was because the organizers of Le Mans hadn’t yet offered up their vision of what sports car racing would look like in 2024 and beyond.

On Friday, the ACO did just that with the announcement that the next generation GT class will be based on the GT3 specifications. However, in an effort to keep a team’s operating costs as low as possible, the ACO is looking to “prevent” factory-backed teams from “officially” participating in the new class.

Richard Mille, President of the FIA Endurance Commission said one way to do that is by enforcing the driver classifica- tions to ensure a mix of professional and amateur drivers in the new GT class.

Sportscar365.com specifically asked ACO President Pierre Fillon about how a team like Corvette Racing could partici- pate in Le Mans in 2024 and he replied, “You have to ask the question to Corvette. They can come with amateur driv- ers and private teams.”

Le Mans Racing Plans Continued...

(Continued from page 19)

Fillon says the ACO hasn’t yet determined if there will be more than one GT racing class or two, as is currently the case with GTE-Pro and GTE-Am, but he reiterated that the objective is to contain costs, saying “Today GTE is very costly, and it is something we don’t want” when the new class begins racing in 2024. Fillon adds, “We will have the final decision at the end of this year.”

We believe that GM was set to announce Cadillac’s participation in the new LMDh class on Friday, but stepped back from making it official following the ACO press conference. Currently, Toyota, Porsche, Audi, Ferrari, BMW, Acura, and Peugeot have all announced plans to go racing in the new LMDh prototype class.

While Le Mans has always been the signature event for Corvette Racing, IMSA president John Doonan says IMSA’s new GTD Pro class will still offer a place for manufactures [sic] to participate in GT racing.

“We felt like it was absolutely the right time to make the transition to GT3 specifications. With GTD Pro, we still believe there’s a place for manufacturer programs, works teams if you will, in GT. That’s what we believe is right for the indus- try.[ʺ]

The ACO’s decision not only puts Corvette Racing’s future Le Mans plans in doubt, but it could cause GM to rethink its plans for a GT3 program for IMSA as well. While a move to the LMDh has most likely been discussed behind closed doors, most Corvette Racing fans we’ve talked with are not very enthusiastic about such a change.

Callaway Introduces ‘Launch Edition’ by Mitch Talley (CorvetteBlogger.com) Tue., Aug. 24 | If you’re interested in the upcoming Callaway Corvette C8 “Launch Edition,” you might want to head to this weekend’s Corvettes at Carlisle where the car will be making its public debut.

Corvettes at Carlisle, billed as the world’s largest Corvette event with more than 5,000 Corvettes gathered, is slated for Thursday, Aug. 26 through Saturday, Aug. 28 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Callaway factory staff will be on hand to answer questions about the new package – described by the company as “a group of powerfully engineered components designed to enhance several Corvette C8 performance characteristics.” No details on exact performance figures have been released by the company, but it’s rumored to be in the neighbor- hood of at least 600 horsepower, up considerably from the stock 495 horsepower.

Callaway Cars will have a display tent on the Carlisle Manufacturers Midway, where staff members will present the new products and support purchases of Callaway’s Show Specials. C7-based Callaway Corvette SC757s will also be on hand,

Standard equipment on the C8 Launch Edition will include:

 Callaway Engine Group with Callaway Ported Intake Manifold and Callaway Honker C8 Inlet Air System  Interior Build Plaque  Underhood Build Plaque with Vehicle Identification Number  Callaway Exterior Badging  Authentication Documentation Package  Callaway Forged C8 Wheel Set  Double-D Exhaust System  Carbon Fiber Rear Diffuser  Callaway Interior Group with Callaway Alcantara Horn Cover, Callaway Door Sill Panels, Callaway Billet Pedal Pad Set, Callaway Embroidered Floor Mats.

The Callaways also feature a 3 Year / 36,000 Mile Limited Warranty.

Options include Premium Wheel Finish, Aero Group Level 1 and 2, Handling Group Level 1, Callaway Factory Delivery, and Track Delivery.

Last month, company founder Reeves Callaway told Autoweek that the Callaway C8 won’t be available until sometime next year.

“What we have to do from a product point of view is slotted to the product plan in the correct way,” Callaway told Au- toweek. “And what that means for us is, we can’t compete with any model that General Motors produces, we have to be an additive to whatever model we choose. And whatever model makes the most sense, though we don’t want to be in a position where people have to choose between a Callaway and a General Motors standard product, we want them to always think of the standard product as enhanced by Callaway’s approach. So generally, we choose the top perform- ing model and do something to it.”

New 2022 Exterior Colors in the Sun By Keith Cornett ((CorvetteBlogger.com) Thu., Sep. 02 | It was only last week at Corvettes at Carlisle that we had an opportunity to see the three new exterior colors for the 2022 Corvette– Hypersonic Gray, Amplify Orange, and Caffeine Metallic. We always like to reserve judg- ment on any new color until we’ve had the opportunity for ourselves to see it in the sunshine. Unfortunately, the cars at Carlisle were kept under a tent so we never did get a great look at them.

Lucky for us, this week we are in Bowling Green for the National Corvette Museum’s 27th Anniversary Celebration, and the three new Corvette colors are on display outside under the patio. We were able to capture these Corvettes in di- rect sunlight and have them for you below.

I had received a couple inquiries from readers about the new colors, specifically the Hypersonic Gray with folks asking my opinion on it. There are two Hypersonic Gray cars here on display, one a regular Coupe and the other being Silver IMSA GTLM Championship Edition. As you can see, there is some travel in the color from the way the different body panels are aligned, but not so much like Silver Flare which can change drastically based on your point of view. Of the three new colors, it’s our favorite.

But holy cow does that Caffeine Metallic wake up under the sun. It becomes a burgundy with red, orange, and silver metallic flakes all shining hard. Those that see it under the sun are having their minds changed about the color based on a few enthusiasts we talked with while around the car, although many preface their comments with “it’s not our first choice but…” In the sun, it’s a very dynamic shade, but out of the sun, it’s a chocolate bar.

Finally, we do like the Amplify Orange which we think is very much in the same vein as Rapid Blue in that there is no metallic shine at all. It reminds us of the Tangelo Orange colors on the Forgiato C7 widebodies that were all the rage a few years ago.

COVID-19 slowed things down but the world is coming around again! Car shows and cruise nights are back! Len Feinberg (’17 Callaway) captured these:

NCM Ambassador’s Corner by Al Fuller (‘20) Hello fellow AACCers!! Well, the days are getting shorter, but (hopefully) the smiles are just as big. I hope this finds everyone well, healthy, and enjoying the occasional respites from what I believe is the most humid summer in a very long time. I try and reserve my commentary for items that are not personal in nature, but, as I have become good friends with so many of you, I wanted to update my situation and perhaps confirm a rumor some of you may have heard. My employer has offered me a relocation to North Carolina, and after visiting the area in late July, Andrea and I feel it is the right move to accept their offer. Same employer (I love my job and co-workers), same job, just working near our NC facility as our Bethlehem facility is closing in 2024. That hopefully explains my “business” of late – and our lack of participa- tion in so many AACC events that we normally would love to attend, and my parting with lots of Adams Polishes prod- ucts. Besides both of us continuing to work full-time, we are consumed with getting rid of 18 years worth of “clutter” that I’ve managed to accumulate, and prepare our home for sale. We expect to be living in NC (albeit initially in a rental property) in early November at this point – things are moving quickly. I’ve told Marty and Laura that Andrea and I in- tend on remaining AACC members going forward, and we plan on making the trip to Carlisle every year, so this will not be “goodbye.” Of course, having an NCM Ambassador remotely located will most likely not work, so I’m sure there will be efforts to find a replacement. Speaking of Carlisle, if you’re wondering why the newsletter is late, blame me. And I blame Carlisle — wow, what an event! Hopefully if you were not able to attend in person, you’ve seen updates on social media and/or on the Carlisle Events website. Personally it was an incredible event for Andrea and I. Like our esteemed past president, I was asked to be a celebrity judge, and was humbled to do so. The car I chose was a 1980 (C3) L82 Corvette that was fully restored by a father and son from NY, then painted in Atomic Orange (a C7 color). It was stunning from a distance, and even more so up close; and the “story” was incredible. They were very appreciative of being picked, and great representatives of the hobby. And, while in line for the celebrity judge meeting, Harlan Charles introduced me to Josh Holder, another GREAT ambassador for GM Engineering. Additionally, as many of you know, Andrea was the receptionist for Audi Allentown for its first years of existence, while it operated out of a temporary building/trailer. And, for a short 6 weeks, I was a salesperson there. While there, I sensed something very special about two of the younger members of the sales team. Now, fast forward almost 6 years, and one of those two is the GM of the Ciocca Subaru dealership they acquired from Kerbeck, and the other is the GM of Ciocca Corvette. We reconnected at Carlisle, and they invited Andrea and I to join them for their small dinner off-site with the GM Team on Friday night. Andrea and I ended up sitting with Keith Cornett, aka the “Corvette Blogger,” and Exterior Design Manager (although he has a more impressive formal title) Kirk Bennion. I was already acquaintances with both,

(Continued from page 24) but it was nice to spend quiet time with them. We spent the evening sharing Corvette stories, and learning about the GM Team’s incredible passion for the car. Carlisle continues to be a magical place. . . In terms of the NCM, the Anniversary Celebration event is happening as I type this. I was hoping to attend as your Am- bassador, but my pending home sale prohibited that from happening. I am trying to participate remotely as time allows. I will try and update with next month’s letter, but the NCM did just announced (yesterday, 09/01/21) they’ve selected a new President and CEO – Sharon Brawner. I’m incredibly excited for this change, as are many others. Sharon drives a C7 Corvette, and has worked the last 20+ years for the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum as SVP of Sales and Marketing. She just seems like a perfect fit in every sense of what the NCM needs. I am excited to meet her, and have her meet many of our AACC members. I am hopeful the full story will be elsewhere in the newsletter, but, as I said, I’m late with my submission this month (who am I kidding, I am *ALWAYS* late, but later than normal this month), so I expect the rest of the document is complete. In any case, you’ll see the story at some point. Given my lateness, I’ll sign off here. Save the wave, see everybody for our event on the 11th, where we will be bringing both a Corvette and a “Corvette-powered Cadillac.”
