I was born up north, but love the south – especially Atlanta, where I live. I work for NBA TV and take my work home with me every night. There’s nothing like working a 12-hour shift and then coming home to talk about the games on Twitter. I love stats. Until I decided to work for the NBA, I was going to be a fashion designer. I even have a portfolio. I do music on the side, and I work with hip-hop producers but write pop/soul lyrics. I played competitive tennis. And as you will soon see, I love to write. A few things about working in TV. If you think going to live games is an adrenaline rush, you’ve never seen what goes on during a live show. The most interesting things are always said during production meetings. I am very lucky as a fan to see basketball through the eyes of former players (it really has changed the way I view each game). And production trucks may just be the coldest places on Earth – especially those in Michigan, but that is a story for another day. I find it frustrating when teams take their talent for granted. Look at the random playing time the Warriors gave Jamal Crawford last year. When Golden State played the Bucks on Jan. 15 this season, they were left with four players on the court at the end of the game. Stephen Curry fouled out but had to remain in due to NBA regulations. To me, this is a microcosm of the Warriors’ philosophy or in other terms: karma. Needless to say, I was thrilled when Crawford was traded to the Hawks in the offseason. While the media focused on the A.I. bench saga, Crawford seamlessly transitioned from starter to sub , as his role with the team became more defined with every game. Crawford told me that he was told by the team to “be aggressive and score…make stuff happen on offense.” And so far, he has wasted no time. Armed with the trust of his teammates and vision of the playoffs, Crawford proves he is not only a capable scorer, but a playmaker and difference maker. This season, Crawford has been fearless when it comes to taking and making big shots . On a hyped home game against the Celtics on Jan. 8, Crawford scored 14 of his team-best 18 points in the fourth quarter. He completed a four-point play that energized the entire arena followed by a three-point dagger later in the quarter to put the game out of reach. “Jamal Crawford made a couple of crazy shots, but that’s what he does and you kind of expect that,” says Celtics forward Paul Pierce after the game. dimemag.com/…/the-biggest-x-factor-i… 3/14 1/21/2010 The Biggest X-Factor In The Eastern Co… Though what Crawford did against the Celtics looked tame compared to the game-winning three-pointer he knocked down at the buzzer a week later against the Suns. “I think he’s played a major, major role for our ball club without a doubt,” says coach Mike Woodson . “We haven’t had a guy that can come off our bench like that and be that explosive and go get shots and score the ball pretty much at will…he’s been great for us so far this season.” His ice water in veins act on the court isn’t the only quality Crawford brought to Atlanta. “He’s a really, really, really good teammate off the court and on the court,” says rookie point guard Jeff Teague, “Off the court, he talks to me about things I can do to get better…he also helps me on the defensive end with the pick and roll situation.” Crawford’s experience playing in media pervasive cities like Chicago and New York give him distinct composure and maturity that translates to his game. While the spotlight has always been on the large market teams, the media attention hasn’t always been positive. “It was tough because I thought I was giving my all every single night and we kept losing,” says Crawford. “That’s why I don’t take this situation for granted at all. I’m very thankful and very blessed to be here.” Besides lights out shooting and circus shots , Crawford is one of the nicest players I’ve chatted with. His answers are always sincere and thought out and he never hesitates to give a few minutes of his time – even as media availability is winding down. On or off the court, he’s easy to root for. Since the Hawks are not the Mets (I should know, I’m from New York), they are on their way to what should be a third consecutive playoff appearance. This time, they may have the X-factor needed to make a legit title push . As Crawford looks to play in his first career postseason and the Hawks aim to redeem a second round sweep, it looks like the foundation of a perfect partnership. “I think they’ll help me get to the playoffs and hopefully I can help them go further,” says Crawford. So far, he’s made it look easy. Follow Tracy on Twitter at @basketballista . Follow Dime on Twitter at @DIMEMag . Become a fan of Dime Magazine on Facebook HERE . January 20th, 2010 at 3:42 pm Mink says: He’s been great, but I worry about the lack of ball movement in 4th quarters this season. Quite often we’ve been outscored in the 4th but Craw has done just enough to get us the win, which is great, but every time it’s either Iso Joe or Iso Crawford.. Maybe they’ll get it fixed by season’s end. 5. January 20th, 2010 at 3:53 pm b says: i think the trade deadline, rashard lewis, KG’s health, and delonte west are certainly x-factors in the east. but jamal crawford? An ‘x-factor’ i think would be something more unpredictable than crawford. he’s proven to be an effective scorer, able to play both back court roles, a generally reliable ball handler, and a gambler on d. dimemag.com/…/the-biggest-x-factor-i… 5/14 1/21/2010 The Biggest X-Factor In The Eastern Co… maybe the Hawks are the x-factor in the east but not crawford himself. we know what to expect from him at this point in his career. 6. January 20th, 2010 at 4:38 pm hahns says: im a huge crawford fan ever since his time w/ ny. i wish the knicks didnt trade him- but im happy to see that the entire league is starting to appreciate how good this guy is. 7. January 20th, 2010 at 7:43 pm sh!tfaced says: Yeah, the trade deadline and KG’s knee are the biggest factors in the East. If Cleveland gets good value back if they trade Ilgauskas… though Crawford is the biggest wild card in the league right now. THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS REVISITING THE SUPERSTAR EXTERNALITY: LEBRON’S ‘DECISION’ AND THE EFFECT OF HOME MARKET SIZE ON EXTERNAL VALUE ANDREW DAVID BRYANT SPRING 2013 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Economics with honors in Economics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Edward Coulson Professor of Economics Thesis Supervisor David Shapiro Professor of Economics Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT The movement of superstar players in the National Basketball Association from small- market teams to big-market teams has become a prominent issue. This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.

By Joe Kaiser ESPN Smith had a great 2011 -12, but he is an unrestricted free agent after this season. It took Danny Ferry exactly seven days in his new role as the Atlanta Hawks' president of basketball operations and general manager to completely change the face of the franchise. His ability to swiftly orchestrate separate deals to part with high-priced veterans Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams signaled a commitment to rebuilding and shed as much as $77 million still owed to the two veterans beyond next season. Fast-forward two-and-a-half months to today, and Ferry's rebuilt roster has only a handful of contracts that go beyond the 2012-13 season: • Al Horford : Signed through 2015-16. • Lou Williams : Signed through 2013-14. • John Jenkins : 2012 first-round pick. • Mike Scott : 2012 second-round pick. • Jeff Teague : Due to become a restricted free agent at season's end, barring an extension. Notice one big name we didn't mention: Josh Smith . The tantalizingly talented, yet often frustrating, forward is among the many Hawks entering the final year of their deals, and he represents arguably the biggest challenge for Ferry to date: what to do with Smith. If handled correctly, this could be the next step toward eventually turning the Hawks into a perennial playoff contender. Mishandled, and this could undo everything good that came out of the trades of Johnson and Williams. So the question is, what's the smarter move for Ferry and the Hawks? a) Negotiate an extension that will keep Smith in Atlanta for the long term.

Numbers game -- The Washington Times The Washington Times www.washingtontimes.com Numbers game By Patrick Hruby THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published April 13, 2004 Everyone else has it wrong. The fans. The press. Even the league. They're blinded by box scores. Hamstrung by hype. Of this and more, Wayne Winston is certain. A single mouse click tells him so. "Nobody should be talking about LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony," he says. "They should be talking about Dwyane Wade. It's a crime." For Winston, Wade's superiority is not a matter of opinion. It's a fact, cold and hard, like an icicle. You can argue politics, and you can argue the best "Godfather" flick (well, excluding part III). But when it comes to the NBA Rookie of the Year race, you can't argue the data. At least not with Winston, a former "Jeopardy" champ who's good with math the way Eric Clapton is good with chords. "James rates as an average NBA player," says Winston, a professor of decision sciences at Indiana University. "That's good since very few rookies rate that high. But Wade's a real impact player for Miami. He ranks 21st best in the league in terms of changing the chances of your team winning a game." Like any MIT graduate worth his sodium chloride, Winston has the numbers to prove his point. More than 5,000 pages' worth, to be exact. Only you won't find his statistics in a newspaper. Together with fellow sports math guru Jeff Sagarin -- the brain behind USA Today's computer rankings -- Winston has created Winval, a sophisticated program that rates and ranks the value of every NBA player from Tariq Abdul-Wahad to Lorenzen Wright.

  • The Case for Kevin By
The Case for Kevin By Http://DraftKevinDurant.Blogspot.Com 24 June 2007 Please send comments, questions, corrections and additional citations to: [email protected] Background : In 1984, a decision was made that altered the course of the Portland Trailblazers and left mental and emotional scars on their fan base that exist to this day. That decision, of course, was to draft Kentucky center Sam Bowie with the team’s #2 pick in the NBA draft, leaving Michael Jordan, who became the undisputed greatest basketball player in the history of the world, to the Chicago Bulls at #3. In a recent interview, Houston Rockets President Ray Patterson defended the Blazers’ decision to draft Bowie, stating, “Anybody who says they would have taken Jordan over Bowie is whistling in the dark. Jordan just wasn't that good.”1 “Jordan just wasn’t that good? ” Reading that quote more than twenty years later, it’s almost impossible to fathom that there existed a day in which “basketball people,” the executive who today are paid millions of dollars to judge the relative mental and athletic skills of teenagers, could not determine that the mythic Michael Jordan was, and would be, a better basketball player than the infamous Sam Bowie. Many things have changed since 1984: AAU youth basketball allows fans to watch players at younger ages, the internet disperses grainy street court video across the world, the NBA has its own television network making famous any and all of its players, mathematical algorithms are used by executives to aid in personnel judgment, and scouts, writers, journalists and bloggers are able to weigh the relative merits of players in ways never thought possible in 1984.
