DeSales Spirituality Services Salesian Sunday Reflection

Trinity Sunday May 30, 2021

Today, Trinity Sunday, the Church celebrates the three Divine Persons in God. St. Francis de Sales states that we, as a community, are called to a similar union of pure love: The pure love of the Trinity overflows into the spiritual health of the whole human family. The Holy Spirit, in us during this mortal life, leads us to Christ, who is the way to the Father. It is the Trinity that has brought about the mystery of God be- coming human. Our Savior has taken on our likeness and given us His. Only in and through Christ are we able to participate in the Trinity’s union of pure love. Our spiritual health is founded on the Incarnation. Our Savior was too great a lover of truth and authentic goodness to be carried away by greed, ambition, and honors that harm us. Our Lord calls us to love one another and be united as purely and perfectly as possible. It is only God’s image and likeness that we ought to love and honor in all. St. Paul recommends: “Beloved, walk the way of love for one another as very dear children of God.” Paul adds that he wants us to walk with giant strides as Jesus did: loving and forgiving all. We are truly God’s children when we love one another dearly in all goodness of heart. The union of the three Divine Persons is impossible to imagine. It would be pre- sumptuous to hope to reach an identical union of love as found in the three Divine Persons. Yet we must be willing to approach this union in a manner consistent with our human condition. We are all called to become holy, but we must rely primarily on God’s grace, not our own human effort, to love divinely. Just as the love of the three Divine Persons overflows into the whole human family, may our love resem- ble the Trinity, and overflow into the hearts of those we encounter each day.

Holy Redeemer by the Sea www.obxcatholicparish.org 8 Saying Farewell….to Last Rites The Sacrament once reserved for the dying has become a Sacrament of healing to all who need it at any time. Last Rites no longer exists - it is now the Anointing of the Sick. The Church defines it this way:

In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin – and sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dy- ing and rising. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. We call your attention to that middle paragraph. There is nothing more distress- ing to the family of a dying person, or to the priest, to have the pressure of arriving ‘in time’ to anoint a dying person, especially when that person has been ill for a time and could have received the Sacrament while still able to appreciate and par- ticipate in the Sacrament. In fact, those who suffer illness of body or soul are in- vited to attend our healing Mass the first Wednesday of every month, and receive the grace of anointing while mobile. Notice the section of our bulletin regarding the Anointing of the Sick, words which appear every week: The Sacrament of the Sick is available to all in need of healing. PLEASE DO NOT WAIT until death is imminent to offer your loved one this grace. Also, the Sacrament is offered in conjunction with Daily Mass on the first Wednesday of the month. There have been many times when we received calls to anoint the body of a loved one who has just passed, when the anointing could have taken place earlier during his or her prolonged state of infirmity. This would have provided peace of mind to the sick person, to the family, and to the priest. We urgently ask that you request Father Bill or Father John to administer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to you or a family member long before that request becomes a race against the clock.
