The District is bounded by Tirunelveli District on the North and the east. • The South Eastern boundary is flanked by Gulf of Mannar. On the South and the South West, the boundaries are the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. On the West and North West it is bound by Kerala State. • The District lies between 8o 03' and 8o 35' N Latitude, 77o 15' and 77o 36' E Longitude and has an areal extent of 1684 sq.km. • There are 9 Blocks, 95 Villages and 1384 Habitations in the District. Physiography and Drainage: • The major river in the district is Kuzhithuraiar. • This river has got two major distributaries namely Kodayar and Paralayar. There are many tributaries for Kodayar River and among them are Chittar I and Chittar II rivers. • The origin of Kodayar River is Western Ghats and the river confluences with Arabian Sea near Thengaipattanam, at a distance of about 56 Km. west of Cape Comorian, the southernmost tip of India. • Valliar, another small river and its tributary Thoovalar, originates from Velimalai Hills, and confluences with Arabian Sea near Manavalakurichi. Pazhayar is another small river draining the district. PRE-FEASIBILTY REPORT 1.0 INTRODUCTION OF THE MINING ACTIVITY Sukumaran for Sukumaran Quarry is proposing a new(Building Stone) Quarry with Lease at Survey No. 241/1, 241/2, 241/3, 242/1, 263/3, 263/4,263/5, 264/1, 264/7, 264/12 & 265/1of Anavoor Village , Neyyattinkara Taluk, Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala for an area of 4.4082 hectares. The proposed quarry area is hillock. In most parts of the quarry lease area, the rocks are exposed and also the granite (building stone) exposures are present / bordering to the lease boundary proving the occurrence of the granite (building stone). The proposed quarry area is located at Anavoor 12 km from Neyyattinkara and 32 km from Trivandrum.The highest elevation of the lease area is 195m MSL and lowest is 120m MSL. As the proposed area is hillock, the drainage of the lease area is towards west direction. No habitants are located in the lease area. The geological resources of granite (building stone) in mining lease area are estimated to be 43,11,625MT. The Blocked Reserves and Mineable Reserve of granite( building stone) in mining lease area are estimated to be 20,15,930MT and 22,95,695MT respectively. In the first five years of plan period, total 5,00,000Tons of granite (building stone) shall be quarried/mined. The balance mineral reserves and part of blocked resources shall be quarried after modifying the bench design in next five year period.

The ritual art of Kaliyoottu was originally celebrated in North Malabar to propitiate Goddess Kali and was brought to Travancore by King Marthanda Varma (1729–1758). Legend has it that Marthanda Varma Maharaja tried to capture Kayamkulam province several times to expand his domain. Although unsuccessful, he did not give away his ambition. His one and only motive was the defeat Kayamkulam Raja. With the unyielding desire he was forced to make another arrangement for a war. On his way to Kayamkulam it is said that he chose the big ground near the Sarkara temple to take rest. Learning about the arrival of Maharaja in their mace, that leaders assembled together to meet the Maharaja. Hearing the Raja's stories of defeat at Kayamkulam, they suggested that the only way to his triumph was to offer a Kaliyoot to Sarkaradevi. In agreement with their suggestion the Maharaja decided to offer Kaliyoot to Sarkaradevi and finally became successful in the war.
