The Honourable Yonah Martin L’honorable Yonah Martin News Release For immediate release December 21, 2019 YEAR END SUMMARY & 2020 PRIORITIES COQUITLAM, BC – The Honourable Yonah Martin, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and Co-Chair of Canada Korea Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, hosted the annual Christmas news conference and luncheon. The official opening ceremony of the 43rd Canadian Parliament was held on December 5, 2019, with a Speech from the Throne delivered by Governor General Julie Payette in the Senate of Canada. The Senate rose on December 12 following Royal Assent of Bill C-2, An Act for granting to Her Majesty certain sums of money for the federal public administration for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020. As Opposition Deputy Leader and House Leader of the Senate, Senator Martin led her colleagues in the Upper Chamber throughout the previous Parliament to hold the Liberal Government to account, and will continue to do so throughout the current sitting of Parliament with a stronger mandate from Canadians across Canada. Senator Martin highlighted the significant year 2019 has been with a record number of six Korean Canadian candidates who ran in the 43rd General Election. With Nelly Shin’s historical win, Senator Martin looks forward to working closely with MP Shin as members of both the CPC BC Caucus and the National Caucus. 2020 will begin with the 5th Anniversary of the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement, followed by the start of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War years and the 75th Anniversary of Korea’s Independence from Japanese colonialism. We will also launch the 2020 Parliamentary internship program in the spring of 2020, in partnership with regional communities whose invaluable support will empower the next generation of leaders. Senator Martin underscored the importance of 2020; and looks forward to working closely with community leaders and members across Canada to strengthen communities, deepen Canada Korea relations, and honour the Veterans of the Korea War.
