WEBMINARS AND OTHER ONLINE EVENTS ORGANIZED BY

DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS, UNIVERSITY,

FROM JUNE TO OCTOBER, 2020

The Department of Statistics, Assam University. Silchar Campus organized four national events during the pandemic period in online mode. They are (i) National Statistics Day on 29th June (ii) Birth Centenary of Prof. C R Rao on 10th November (iii) Online Lecture Series on 18th September, 2020 and (iv) World Statistics Day on 20th October, 2020. A brief report with photographs of the events are provided below.

(i) NATIONAL STATISTICS DAY CELEBRATION

29TH JUNE, 2020

The Department of Statistics, Assam University celebrated the National Statistics Day 2020 on 29th June, 2020, the birth anniversary of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis who was the doyen of Statistics education in India. The coordinator of the program was Dr. Rama Shanker, Associate Professor, Department of Statistics, Assam University, Silchar. To commemorate the event he Department organized a one day Webinar on “Life and contributions of Prof. Mahalanobis and Applications of Statistics”. All students, research scholars and faculties of Department of Statistics, Assam University and other colleges/universities joined the first ever online- program of the Department through Cisco Webex from 3 P.M to 6 P.M on 29th June, 2020.

The event started at 3.00 P.M with a welcome address by the Head of the Department of Statistics, Prof. Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee. After welcoming all the participants of the national Statistics day he discussed in details about the importance of National Statistics Day and how to use statistical knowledge and statistical thinking for making the world a better place.

The Dean of the Albert Einstein School of Physical Sciences Prof. C R Bhattacharjee, delivered a brief but relevant speech on the event and discussed the importance of Statistics in different fields of knowledge.

The honorable Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. D. C. Nath discussed the history of National Statistics Day, its importance and laid stress on how to develop the undergraduate and graduate courses of Statistics and improve the quality of research in Statistics so as to solve societal problems. Further, he opined that statistics should play a major role in solving problems of real life and to contribute towards the development of the nation.

The total number of registered participants for the event from colleges and universities of India in the webinar were 53. Out of 53 registered participants 21 of them presented their work in the webinar. The list of speakers are given below:

(ii) REPORT ON BIRTH CENTENARY OF PROF. C. R. RAO

10TH SEPTEMBER, 2020

The Department of Statistics, Assam University celebrated the Birth Centenary of Prof. C. R. Rao, a living legend of Statistics on 10th September, 2020. The coordinator of the program was Dr. Rama Shanker, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Statistics, Assam University, Silchar. The Department organized a one day Webinar on “Life and contributions of Prof. C. R. Rao to Commemorate the Birth Centenary of the Living Legend of Statistics on that day from 4.00 P.M. onwards. The event was conducted online in Google Meet. The web link of the event was http://meet.google.com/kwo-sotm-med The event was started at 4 P.M with a welcome address by the Head of Department Dr. Rama Shanker. After welcoming all the participants of the webinar he discussed in brief the contributions of C.R Rao and his qualities which make C.R Rao a living legend of Statistics in the World. The Dean of the Albert Einstein School of Physical Sciences gave a brief speech on Prof. C. R. Rao contributions in different fields of knowledge. The honorable Vice Chancellor of Assam University, Prof. D.C Nath delivered opening remarks on Prof. C. R. Rao and discussed about the contributions of C. R. Rao in the field of Statistics and other disciplines. There were two invited speakers in the webinar, namely Prof. Amarendra Mishra, retired Professor of Statistics from Department of Statistics, Patna University, Patna and Prof. Kishore K. Das, Professor and Head, Department of Statistics, , Assam. Prof. Amarendra Mishra delivered his lecture on “Life and contributions of Prof. C. R. Rao” whereas Prof. Das Delivered a lecture on “A weighted epidemic chain binomial model with one introductory case and its chain probabilities”. (iii) Report of the Online Lecture Series 2020

18th September, 2020

The Department of Statistics, Assam University, Silchar conducted an Online Lecture Series 2020 on 18th September, 2020. The Online Lecture Series 2020 was to observe the “Birth Centenary of Prof. C.R. Rao”. The event was co-ordinated by Dr. Jonali Gogoi, Assistant Professor of the department.

The event started at 4 PM with a welcome address by the Head & Associate Professor of the Department of Statistics, Assam University, Silchar Dr. Rama Shanker. Opening remarks on Prof. C. R. Rao was given by Honourable Vice Chancellor of the university Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath.

Two resource persons and 29 participants attended the Lecture Series. Prof. Bikas K. Sinha, Retired Professor, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata explain about reflections on his meetings with Professor C R Rao- A Global Statistician. Also, Prof. T J Rao, Retired Professor, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata discussed about C. R. Rao’s main Contributions to Official Statistics and Statistical Methodology.

(iv) Report of the World Statistics Day Celebration 2020

20th October, 2020

The Department of Statistics, Assam University celebrated the World Statistics Day 2020 on 20th October, 2020 in a very humble manner. The celebration of World Statistics Day, 2020 is a global collaborative endeavour, organized under the guidance of the United Nations Statistical Commission. The Celebration Banner of the Department is included below.

The World Statistics Day 2020 was themed as “Connecting the world with data we can trust” by the United Nations Statistical Commission. The World Statistics Day in not an Annual Event but is celebrated after every 5 years. The Even was conducted online in Google Meet. The web link of the event was https://meet.google.com/ajx-zmvb-ze .

The event started at 4 PM with a welcome address by the Head of the Department of Statistics, Assam University Dr. Rama Shanker. The HoD after welcoming all the participants of the webinar discussed in details about how statistical knowledge and statistical thinking can provide the world with meaningful information in any field and in turn can help effective policy formation.

The Keynote speaker of the celebration was Prof. Dilip C Nath, Vice Chancellor of the university. Prof. Nath, discussed about the history of World Statistics Day, the utility of appropriate data for good governance, the need of the hour to reframe statistical courses understanding the requirement of the recruiters and provide more practical exposure to live data to the budding data scientists.

Next a Ted Talk (video recording) of Late Professor Hans Rosling a Swedish statistician and Public Health expert was displayed before the participants of the Webinar. The video entitled “Asia’s Rise- When and How” which lasted for 17 minutes, the speaker tried to predict when in future the economy of India and China can go ahead of all the countries of the western world in terms of their per capita income and life expectancy.

The last event of the evening was a National Level Online Quiz where there were as many as 44 registered participants from different colleges and universities of India. The frequency table below provides the details of the affiliation of the participants.
