I had a decent introduction to Albert Campion. Now, to read a few more of her Margery Allingham's acclaimed novels to firmly cement my opinion of the man, his style and his flare. Any suggestions?On the second point, THE CASE OF THE LATE PIG is a fail. I was distracted. I didn't follow the flow of the story or the case well. Narrative involving simpleton speak in the vernacular makes for very difficult reading in my opinion. It's a technique Agatha Christie employs, but her use is not as 'thick' as in this case; It's the difference between Louisiana Bayou and Kentucky Blue Ridge.Good plot. I enjoyed seeing it all unravel at the end. The plot certainly is not the element that cooled me to this work.[Kindle edition review]PLEASE edit this and reissue it to those of us who spent money on it. Granted, there is 'simple speak' narrative which mandates improper spelling. However, when hideous misspellings occur apart from the vernacular, something is definitely wrong. There is even a case where a character's name is broken with a space in the middle of it. I am delighted to say the mysteries are delightful and I am having great fun re-reading them all. The body turns out to be that of Pig Peters, freshly killed five months after his own funeral. Soon other corpses start to turn up, just as Peterrsquo;s body goes missing. Her first novel, Blackkerchief Dick, was published in 1923 when she was 19. Her first work of detective fiction was a serialized story published by the Daily Express in 1927. Entitled The White Cottage Mystery, it contained atypical themes for a woman writer of the era. Her breakthrough occurred in 1929 with the publication of The Crime at Black Dudley. This introduced Albert Campion, albeit originally as a minor character. He returned in Mystery Mile, thanks in part to pressure from her American publishers, much taken with the character. Campion proved so successful that Allingham made him the centrepiece of another 17 novels and over 20 short stories, continuing into the 1960s.From AudioFileMargery Allingham would surely have adored the Albert Campion portrayed here. Margery Allingham was never a favorite of mine primarily because in her early novels her hero, Albert Campion, seemed a pale imitation of Dorothy Sayersrsquo; Peter Wimsey. However, it is clear in this later book that, like Wimsey, Campion has matured and the character ldquo;ticsrdquo; that annoyed me are gone.For some reason, Irsquo;d gotten away from the Golden Age and lately have been reading Victorian and modern mysteries. But ldquo;Tigerrdquo; is one of the books on HRF Keatingrsquo;s list of 100 best mysteries that I hadnrsquo;t read so when a friend pointed out this kindle book for $2.99 I picked it up. A few pages into ldquo;The Tiger in the Smokerdquo;, I remembered why Golden Age was my genre of preference. Most of what Irsquo;ve read over the past couple of years pales in comparison.First of all the ldquo;cozy mystery thrillerrdquo; label on this is completely misleading.

By Mark Billingham At one point in my latest novel, The Burning Girl, Detective Inspector Tom Thorne - my series character - is involved in extracting information from a witness through the somewhat unconventional use of a steam iron. We have indeed come a long way since the days of Sherlock Holmes and Lord Peter Wimsey, for whom such behaviour would have been anathema. These were men who brought scoundrels to book in days infinitely more genteel - though Wimsey was known to wave a shooting stick around when his dander was up, and Holmes once rapped Moriarty across the knuckles with a meerschaum... How have we got from the gentleman detective to one whom it is often difficult to tell apart from his quarry? And why, when the likes of Edmund Wilson damned the fiction he inhabits as "no better than newspaper strips" does the detective - cop, private eye or enthusiastic amateur - remain so popular? It all began with Holmes, of course... Once A Study in Scarlet had been published, in 1887, the game was well and truly afoot. Though Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841) can claim the first detective in fiction, and Wilkie Collins' The Moonstone (1868) is regarded as the first modern detective novel, Conan Doyle's creation captured the popular imagination to an extent that Poe's Auguste Dupin and Collins' Sergeant Cuff had never approached. The adventures of the Great Detective gripped readers to the extent that, when he was killed off, many took to wearing black armbands. Doyle had known what he was doing from the beginning, of course.
