In partnership with Welcome to the 27th Heritage Open Days in Coventry

The National Heritage Open Days Festival returns this year with the theme of ‘Edible ’. Co-ordinated locally by Coventry City Council, the event celebrates Coventry’s architecture, culture and local and social history. Visitors have the chance to explore some behind-the-scenes areas that are not usually open to the public and are given FREE access to participating venues that normally charge. As always there is a wide variety of events, buildings and tours and it is great to be able to get back to in-person events after the limiting circumstances of last year, although, of course, we must continue to do all we can to keep ourselves and others safe and every part of the Festival has been planned with COVID safety measures in mind.. Thank you to all the volunteers and members of the Coventry of Tour Guides who hold Green Badges and/or Blue badges, for all their hard work in making sure these events go ahead in a safe manner, and thank you in advance to all of you for supporting the event and following all the safety advice. This year, Coventry holds the title of UK City of Culture and the Festival is an important part of that year. The events in this guide highlight the amazing history and culture that our city has to offer and shine a light on some of the city’s hidden gems. We hope you enjoy the events and find something for all the family to enjoy across the 10 days. Councillor Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Events, and Councillor David Welsh, Cabinet Member with responsibilities for Heritage For further information, please visit www.coventry.gov.uk/hod call Karen Aspin on 024 7683 2479 or email: [email protected]

Dame Goodyver’s Daye celebration

Friday 16th September, Saturday 17th September both starting at Lady Statue @11.00am Dame Goodyvers Daye commemorating the actual and only date we have of Godiva, benefactor of the first Benedictine priory church in Coventry. In ancient times an annual feast was held in September. After a break of 500 years Pru Porretta MBE,Coventry’s official restored the feast day back onto the city calendar. Dame Goodyver’s Daye gets bigger and better each year by including more faiths and cultures, and more Godiva Sisters. Please see the film link https://youtu.be/Ir-0W8Nb0XE Godiva Trust is a registered charity that aims to advance the education of the general public in the and the legend of Lady Godiva. Including the promotion of unity, advancing education and raising awareness in equality and diversity, and promoting activities to foster understanding between people from diverse backgrounds for the people of Coventry. For many years Godiva Trust has successfully engaged with various community and faith groups, community organisations, schools, and hard to reach groups within the city of Coventry. Pru reimagined the role of Godiva from a spectated figurehead on a horse to a strong female leader working with other female heroines from different cultures to empower their communities and to celebrate diversity across those communities collaboratively. These are the Godiva Sisters and the annual Dame Goodyver’s Daye celebrates this.

The original castle was probably the work of Geoffrey Savage in the time of Henry I (1100-35); here are the remains of Bagot’s Castle, a medieval fortified house. The present castle is thought to have been rebuilt some time in the 1380s by Sir William Bagot, a distinguished nobleman of the time. There appears to have been a moat surrounding the castle as there is evidence of a drawbridge. The castle subsequently passed through several hands and eventually became derelict in the 16th century. The current site is set in 19 acres of pasture land. The Education Visitor Centre displays the artefacts from the site, with photographs and history on display boards.
