COVENTRY’S Heritage OPEN DAYS Celebrating Coventry’s Culture and Heritage For further information call 024 7697 6987 or visit www.coventry.gov.uk/hod In partnership with Welcome to the 27th Heritage Open Days in Coventry The National Heritage Open Days Festival returns this year with the theme of ‘Edible England’. Co-ordinated locally by Coventry City Council, the event celebrates Coventry’s architecture, culture and local and social history. Visitors have the chance to explore some behind-the-scenes areas that are not usually open to the public and are given FREE access to participating venues that normally charge. As always there is a wide variety of events, buildings and tours and it is great to be able to get back to in-person events after the limiting circumstances of last year, although, of course, we must continue to do all we can to keep ourselves and others safe and every part of the Festival has been planned with COVID safety measures in mind.. Thank you to all the volunteers and members of the Coventry Guild of Tour Guides who hold Green Badges and/or Blue badges, for all their hard work in making sure these events go ahead in a safe manner, and thank you in advance to all of you for supporting the event and following all the safety advice. This year, Coventry holds the title of UK City of Culture and the Festival is an important part of that year. The events in this guide highlight the amazing history and culture that our city has to offer and shine a light on some of the city’s hidden gems. We hope you enjoy the events and find something for all the family to enjoy across the 10 days. For many years Godiva Trust has successfully engaged with various community and faith groups, community organisations, schools, and hard to reach groups within the city of Coventry. Having not been in use for many years, it was completely re-furbished as part of the Phoenix Initiative development in celebration of 2000 years since Christ’s birth. The Old Bluecoat School has been transformed and plays an important role in this key part of the city centre. In recent years, it has been used as a residential school for youth ministry training at various times during the year, welcoming students from around the world. The building itself was constructed over one corner of the original St Mary’s Cathedral. The evidence of this can be seen today in the cellars of the building which are actually inside one of the original pillars of the Cathedral, dating from around 1150AD.
