Published by American Research Institute for Policy Development DOI: 10.15640/jssw.v9n1a4 URL: https://doi.org/10.15640/jssw.v9n1a4 Rethinking Human Essence and Social Relations from Dogville Paulo Alexandre e Castro1 Abstract One of the main reasons why Dogville (2003), by Lars Von Trier became a famous film, was the way it was filmed, that is, the way Lars Von Trier created a totally new aesthetic in filming, by providing a scenario that represents reality. In fact, this is the right word, scenario, but it‟s not just that. With this particular way of filming, Lars Von Trier provides also a particular way of thinking, that is, he ends up reproducing the way of seeing with the imagination: creating presence in the absence, as happens when we remember a deceased relative or when we create artistically. In Dogville there is no room for imagination. In this sense, we argue that this film represents contemporary (alienated) society where everything has its value and ethical / moral values are only manifested paradoxically as a reaction. Dogville becomes also an aesthetic educational project since it provides an understanding of human condition and human nature. Cineasta del corpo Retrospettiva 16 - 21 febbraio 2010 Cinema Gnomo Milano Iniziativa promossa dal Comune di Milano A cura di Pier Giorgio Carizzoni Organizzata dall’ Associazione Culturale Dioniso Con il patrocinio del Centre Culturel Français de Milan Media partner: Rai Radio Tre Martedì 16 febbraio 2010 si inaugura al Cinema Gnomo di Milano la prima retrospettiva italiana di Patrice Chéreau, celebre regista francese di teatro e di cinema, al quale il Comune di Milano rende omaggio fino a domenica 21 febbraio con la proiezione dei 10 lungometraggi da lui diretti dal 1975 a oggi. L’iniziativa, curata da Pier Giorgio Carizzoni e organizzata dall’Associazione Culturale Dioniso con il patrocinio del Centre Culturel Français de Milan e la collaborazione di Rai RadioTre, si svolge in concomitanza con la presenza a Milano di Chéreau per la regia lirica dell’opera “Da una casa di morti” di Leoš Janá ček, al Teatro alla Scala dal 28 febbraio. Chéreau ha diretto nei suoi film alcuni dei più grandi attori del cinema europeo: Isabelle Huppert, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Isabelle Adjani, Daniel Auteuil, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Simone Signoret, Charlotte Rampling, Jean-Hugues Anglade. Dalla sua filmografia emerge il profilo di un autore che sa esplorare con notevole vigore espressivo i volti e i corpi dei suoi personaggi, indagando in profondità nei risvolti più intimi e nascosti dell’animo umano, senza compiacimenti né rassicurazioni. Circa la metà dei film in programma, irreperibili in Italia, sono presentati in versione originale con sottotitoli in italiano. La rassegna si inaugura martedi 16 con la proiezione di Persécution (ore 18:30, replica domenica 21 ore 21:15, versione originale con sottotitoli in italiano), ultimo film diretto dal regista, presentato al Festival del cinema di Venezia 2009 e alla “Panoramica” milanese in anteprima assoluta, che racconta l’infelicità di un uomo perseguitato e persecutore, amante geloso e infedele fagocitato dal suo stesso narcisismo. -

Lars von Trier INTRODUCTION / INVITATION: “THE NATURE OF MY FEARS”1 Lars von Trier’s 2009 film Antichrist, produced by the Danish company Zentropa, tells a story of parental loss, mourning, and despair that follow, and ostensibly result from, the tragic death of a child. The film stars two protagonists, identified by impersonal gendered names as She (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and He (Willem Dafoe). This generic economy of naming suggests that Antichrist, in spite of, or perhaps because of, the eschatological signification of its title, is a story of origins. Antichrist stages a quasi-religious return (within the Abrahamic tradition) to a lapsarian space where the myth of the female agency of the originary transgression,2 and the subsequent establishment of human separateness from nature, are told by von Trier as a story of his own psychic introspection. In the words of Joanne Bourke, professor of history at Birkbeck College known for her work on sexual violence and on history of fear and hatred, Antichrist is a re-telling of the ancient Abrahamic mythology framed as a question “what is to become of humanity once it discovers it has been expelled from Eden and that Satan is in us.”3 This mythological trope grapples with the other-than-human presence, as a demonic or animalistic trace, found at the very core of the human.4 At the premiere of Antichrist at the 2009 -

The paper identies a two channel strategy developed by the authors of the Danish Dogme lms having as goal the generation of the illusion of reality. The rst channel is aiming at the visual layer of the movies, which shows a rm decision to break with the style of the traditional ction lms. The second channel of this strategy is concerned with the narration of the lms. In this regard Dogme contrary to what had been declared in the Vow of Chastity chose one of the most popular lm and TV genres: melodrama. On the one hand Dogme lms created a highly self-reexive visual style and then they combined it on the other hand with a genre which calls for extreme audience identication. Documentarism and deeply conventionalized stories are put together in most Dogme lms to create the reality of ction. Movie is not an illusion states the Manifesto,1 and thus it makes us clear that the movement tries to say something about one of the major themes of cinema and lm theory (and of visual communication in general): the representation of reality.
