Now he has become the very thing he hated most in life. He is the Red Hulk. Military Man General Thaddeus E. Ross was born into a family with a proud tradition of military ser- vice. Both his father and his grandfather served heroically in past American wars. As a boy Thaddeus immersed himself in military history, and he learned how to fly by barn- storming at country fairs. When he came of age Ross enlisted in the military, graduating first in his class at West Point. He married Karen Lee, the daughter of his commanding officer at the time. Ross rapidly rose in rank to captain and then major while serving in his first war. Ross made a great reputation as a leader in combat, but after the war, he was stationed at the nu- clear research facility at Los Alamos, New Mexico. There he met nuclear physicist Brian Banner, the father of Robert Bruce Banner. Ross had risen to the rank of colonel by the time he was sent to his next war, during which he became a general in the U.S. Air Force (Ross never rose beyond three-star gen- eral). As he gloried in combat, he was dissatisfied with the "desk jobs" he was given be- fore and after the war.

McDermott Introduction By the mid-1970’s, many fans of the “Golden Age” of comic books had grown up to become writers and ultimately editors for the comics publishers, sometimes setting the nar- rative histories for their favorite childhood characters themselves. ​Many of these fans-turned- pro produced comics series that attempted to recapture the Golden Age’s excitement, patriotic fervor and whiz-bang attitude. ​The most successful of these titles were produced by Roy Thomas, who fashioned a coherent history of costumed heroes during World War II, and rec- onciled the wildly inconsistent stories of the 1940’s with tightly patrolled continuity initiated with the “Silver Age” of the 1960’s. ​With The Invaders (1975-1979), Thomas focused on the hitherto unrevealed wartime exploits of Marvel Comics’ early mainstays Captain America, the Human Torch, and Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner. ​In 1980, he moved to DC Comics and launched All-Star Squadron, which juggled the histories of the Justice Society of Amer- ica and nearly a hundred secondary characters.

    EARLY REPRESENTATIONS OF CONCENTRATION CAMPS IN GOLDEN AGE COMIC BOOKS: GRAPHIC NARRATIVES, AMERICAN SOCIETY, AND THE HOLOCAUST by Markus Streb SCANDINAVIAN JOURNAL OF COMIC ART (SJOCA) VOL. 3: 1 (FALL 2016) INTRODUCTION The Golden Age of American comic books, lasting roughly from 1938 until 1955, is not only notable for the emergence of superheroes, but also for its confrontation with the USA’s ideological enemies. As the Nazis rose to power in Germany and the extent of their terror became known, they frequently appeared in comic books in the later 1930s. By the 1940s German concentration camps found their way into comic books as well: there are more than three dozen Golden Age comic books from between 1940 and 1955 that explicitly depict concentration camps. Although the visual language of some covers of superhero comics, the largest genre at the time, hints at German atrocities committed in concentration camps, however, the camps themselves play a role in only a few stories. Camp depictions can be found mostly in horror, war, and adventure stories, genres that were on the rise in the early 1950s. Whereas 1955’s masterpiece “Master Race” by Al Feldstein and Bernard “Bernie” Krigstein is most commonly referred to as the first US comic depicting Nazi atrocities, it will be the most recent of the works examined in this article. Apart from a few isolated publications that attempt an overview,1 the depiction of concentration camps in early comic books has mainly been discussed in internet forums or blogs. But unlike Mr. B Fronczak’s list (that stops about the time of Heroes Reborn) this is NOT an attempt at a Marvel continuity (harmony of Marvel titles in time within the fictional universe), but Avengers appearances in order in approx. real world release order . I define Avengers appearances as team appearances, not individual Avengers or even in some cases where several individual Avengers are together (but eventually a judgment call has to be made on some of those instances). I have included some non-Avengers appearances since they are important to a key storyline that does tie to the Avengers, but noted if they did not have a team appearance. Blue (purple for WCA & Ultimates) indicates an Avengers title , whether ongoing or limited series. I have decided that Force Works is not strictly an Avengers title, nor is Thunderbolts, Defenders or even Vision/Scarlet Witch mini- series, although each book correlates, crosses over and frequently contains guest appearances of the Avengers as a team. In those cases, the individual issues are listed. I have also decided that individual Avengers’ ongoing or limited series books are not Avengers team appearances, so I have no interest in the tedious tracking of every Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, or Hank Pym title unless they contain a team appearance or x-over . The same applies to Avengers Spotlight (largely a Hawkeye series, with other individual appearances), Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Vision, Wonder Man, Hulk, She-Hulk, Black Panther, Quicksilver, Thunderstrike, War Machine, Black Widow, Sub-Mariner, Hercules, and other such books or limited series.
