  • Nostalgia, Nationalism and Notability: the Success of Skyfall
Nostalgia, Nationalism and Notability: The Success of Skyfall SARAH KELLEY, University of Bristol ABSTRACT 2012 saw the release of what has since been branded ‘the most successful British film to date’: Skyfall broke box office records by making £94 million in the first 40 days of its release. The positive reception from film critics would have undoubtedly gone some way to attracting patrons to its cinema run, however, the overwhelming commercial success of Skyfall indicates that there were more hooks at play here, amongst the promotional campaign for the film. This article argues that strong themes of nostalgia, nationalism and notability (of the cast and crew), present throughout the marketing and preview literature for Skyfall, played a significant part in generating audience interest for the film. Through textual analysis of a variety of artefacts circulated in anticipation of the film's release, this article aims to explore how these three themes engaged with the audience and helped to ensure a successful box office run for Skyfall. KEYWORDS Analysis, film, promotion, Skyfall, success. Introduction ‘And we’re back’: the words used by an enthralled Mark Kermode (2012) in his review of the most recent instalment in the Bond movie franchise, Skyfall (Sam Mendes, 2012). Despite the commercial success of Skyfall's predecessor, Quantum of Solace (Marc Forster, 2008), the negative response it received from reviewers, who critiqued it for a lack strong themes and identity, meant that the latest Bond instalment was in danger of losing its audience. In contrast to the previous film (which Kermode dubbed ‘Question of Sport’ in mockery of its rather forgettable title), the producers of Skyfall needed to give the cinema-going public a good reason to pay to see their new attempt.

THE MAGAZINE FOR THE SWISS ABROAD february 2009 / NO. 1 A new role for the Swiss army Marc Forster: Switzerland’s man in Hollywood Ordering “Swiss Review” electronically EDITORIAL C O N te N T S 3 Policy on Swiss abroad needs a legal framework ithin the space of a few months, Switzerland’s councils have managed to approve a proposal to examine direct representation for Swiss people abroad W in Parliament, to drastically cut the budget for providing information to Swiss expatriates and, just days later, to establish “Swiss Review” in law. Two steps forward, one step back. Yes to the objective, but no to the cost. Inconsistency in the extreme. The reduction in the budget for “Swiss Review” on the initiative of the FDFA is pain- ful. Not just because the publisher, the Organisation of the Swiss Abroad (OSA), is sud- denly faced with a budgetary shortfall of half a million francs, but even more so because Illustration by Hannes Binder from the new Heidi book this severe course of action raises doubts about awareness in the federal capital Berne of the role played by “Swiss Review” and about how serious people are about recognising 4 the Fifth Switzerland. Discovering Switzerland: city breaks “Swiss Review” is the only publication to reach all Swiss citizens registered with rep- resentations abroad. It keeps you, the reader, up to date with news about your rights and 5 obligations. “Swiss Review” is your Official Journal. It also has the task of providing you Mailbag with information to make it easier for you to exercise your political rights in Switzerland.

  • Makers of 'World War Z' Pay Tribute To
Press Release – August 2011 A HOLLYWOOD SEAL OF APPROVAL FOR FALMOUTH FILMING: MAKERS OF ‘WORLD WAR Z’ PAY TRIBUTE TO THE SOUTH CORNISH PORT TOWN Over £2.5m generated for the local economy… Officials from one of the world‟s largest film studios have praised Falmouth after the town hosted the filming of scenes for a major multi-million pound Hollywood production. Paramount Pictures spent two weeks at the start of August on location at Falmouth Docks as part of the making of apocalyptic zombie thriller World War Z – which stars Brad Pitt, Lost‟s Matthew Fox and several other high profile actors and actresses. Having been approached by Paramount less than two months prior to the shoot, the Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID), Falmouth Town Management, A&P (which operates Falmouth Docks), the harbour authorities and several other local organisations and businesses all worked together to ensure promotional, logistical, safety and security measures were in place to meet the tight production deadlines. The filming itself took place in and around the harbour and several hundred local people were involved as extras and assistants to the main crew. Based out of a temporary headquarters on the outskirts of Falmouth, the extras were transported onto set daily with the majority of them getting the chance to experience a behind- the-scenes view of some of Hollywood‟s most prestigious industry figures at work, including Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson, whose credits include Kill Bill, Casino, JFK and Platoon and Director Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace and The Kite Runner). “The people in Falmouth and Cornwall were incredibly eager to get involved and we had a massive response to our calls for extras, helpers and additional crew members,” said Jeff Taylor, 2nd Assistant Director from Paramount Pictures.

  • The Critical-Industrial Practices of Contemporary Horror Cinema
Off-Screen Scares: The Critical-Industrial Practices of Contemporary Horror Cinema A Dissertation SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Joseph F Tompkins IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Richard Leppert, Adviser January 2013 © Joseph F Tompkins, 2013 Acknowledgements I would like to extend my thanks to the many friends, colleagues, teachers, and family members who provided the necessary support and advice to usher me through both the dissertation writing process and my time as a graduate student. I am grateful to the members of my dissertation committee: Mary Vavrus, Gil Rodman, John Mowitt and Gary Thomas, for their lasting guidance, scholarly advice, and critical feedback. In particular, this project was hatched in Mary Vavrus’s Political Economy of Media seminar, and for that, I’m especially indebted. Also, to Gary Thomas, who taught me, among other things, the power of good, clean prose as well as the radical possibilities of making the classroom into a vitalizing, “heterotopian” space—a rampart against the “mechanical encrustation on the living.” I would also like to convey my sincerest appreciation to my mentor, Richard Leppert, who, since my earliest days as an undergraduate, has been a source of both professional guidance and companionship. Richard is my model—as an educator and a friend. I would also like to thank Jochen Schulte-Sasse, Robin Brown, Cesare Casarino, Liz Kotz, Keya Ganguly, Timothy Brennan, Siobhan Craig, and Laurie Ouellette for their sage advice during my graduate studies. Many friends and colleagues provided me intellectual and emotional support throughout the years: Mathew Stoddard, Tony Nadler, Alice Leppert, Manny Wessels, Mark Martinez, Doyle “Mickey” Greene, Kathie Smith, and Eleanor McGough.
