We summarize the evolution of polar meteorology in both hemispheres, beginning with measure- ments made during early expeditions and concluding with the recent decades in which polar meteorology has been central to global challenges such as the ozone hole, weather prediction, and climate change. Whereas the 1800s and early 1900s provided data from expeditions and only a few subarctic stations, the past 100 years have seen great advances in the observational network and corresponding understanding of the meteorology of the polar regions. For example, a persistent view in the early twentieth century was of an Arctic Ocean dominated by a permanent high pressure cell, a glacial anticyclone. With increased observations, by the 1950s it became apparent that, while anticyclones are a common feature of the Arctic circulation, cyclones are frequent and may be found anywhere in the Arctic. Technology has benefited polar meteorology through advances in in- strumentation, especially autonomously operated instruments. Moreover, satellite remote sensing and com- puter models revolutionized polar meteorology.

    IN THE KINGDOM OF ICE: SEARCHING FOR THE USS JEANNETTE (Source: The Siberian Times, Wikipedia. org) Andrey Khoroshev, a Siberian adventurer, screen writer and TV presenter is planning to find and raise the wreck of the USS Jeannette, which sank during an exploration of the Arctic in 1881. The wreck lies at depth of only 18 metres, with the location known down to one kilometre. Andrey Khoroshev says that in modern day conditions, to find and raise it is not such a hard task. Along with the Russian North fund, he has applied to Russia's influential Geographical Society to carry out an expedition to find the lost schooner, which was seeking - before it was lost - to plant the US flag on the North Pole. The heroic story was told in the book “In the Kingdom of Ice” by Hampton Sides. The USS Jeannette was originally HMS Pandora, a gun vessel of the Royal Navy launched at Pembroke Dockyard, Wales in 1861. The ship was purchased in 1878 by James Gordon Bennett, Jr., owner of the New York Herald; and renamed Jeannette after his sister. Jeannette departed San Francisco on 8 July 1879 under Cdr De long direction. The ship progressed through the Chukchi Sea, but in early September caught fast in the ice near Wrangel Island, and for 21 months, it drifted, in the general direction of its ultimate goal, the North Pole. The 12 June 1881 the pressure of the creaking ice crushed their ship, fortunately giving enough warning to the men to abandon the vessel, salvaging food and small boat.

Web. 9 Jan. 2016. <https://archive.org/details/lieutenantdanen00danegoog>. Master John Danenhower was the navigation officer of the USS Jeannette. In this primary account, he tells the story of his experience on the boat and how he came to be saved. The book was meant for his family, recounting the "cruise" of the USS Jeannette and the true story of what happened. What struck me most about this work is the professional tone in almost all of Danenhower's entries. Even as he describes the ship sinking and the men being out of food, there is no apparent emotion connected to these events, and each incident is related factually and with short, concise statements. The one area where a hint of emotion gets through is where Danenhower describes the crew sharing their insufficient rations with their favorite dogs and having to kill some of the dogs that led their sleds. Without enough food to feed themselves, they couldn't bare to see their dogs die of starvation in front of them. What also stuck out to me is the formal way that Danenhower kept track of all the resources that the local people and Russian government afforded them so that the U.S. government could repay this debt. I took away from this work a greater appreciation for the preparedness of the crew to face the unknown and their own potential death. I was also impressed with how, on the brink of death, the crew still followed military protocols (e.g., never resorted to cannibalism or deserted an injured/sick crew member).

Barry* National Snow and Ice Data Center, Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, and Department of Geography, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309-0449, USA Received 1 January 2016; accepted 30 March 2016 Abstract This paper reviews the major contributions made by Norwegian scientists to Arctic environmental sciences since the 1880s. The review begins with the first International Polar Year (IPY) in 1882–83. It then considers the 1890s to 1920s with the scientific expeditions focusing on ocean and sea ice conditions of Nansen, Amundsen and H. Sverdrup, and the mapping of the Queen Elizabeth Islands by Otto Sverdrup and colleagues. The period from 1911 to the mid-1920s also witnessed annual expeditions to Svalbard led by Adolf Hoel. The 1930s to 1945 period encompassed the Second International Polar Year when Arctic weather stations were established or maintained. The time interval post-World War II to 2000 witnessed major advances made possible by technical and organizational innovations. The establishment of the Norwegian Polar Institute in 1948 led to extensive research on the glaciers and snow cover in the Svalbard archipelago and to oceanographic and sea ice research in the Barents Sea and Arctic Ocean. Remote sensing methods began to be widely used from the 1980s. The new millennium saw the undertaking of the third IPY and a shift to multinational projects.
