Act says basically four things regarding landowners • Landowner must make firebreaks. • Landowner must have equipment to fight fires (except where an agent is appointed) • Landowner must be available to fight fire. • Landowner may become member of FPA except for Government landowners who must. Presumption of negligence (1) If a person who brings civil proceedings proves that he or she suffered loss from a veldfire which — (a) the defendant caused; or (b) started on or spread from land owned by the defendant, the defendant is presumed to have been negligent in relation to the veldfire until the contrary is proved, unless the defendant is a member of a fire protection association in the area where the fire occurred. (2) The presumption in subsection (1) does not exempt the plaintiff from the onus of proving that any act or omission by the defendant was wrongful.

WORKING ON FIRE TEAMS

• Crew Leader – Red armband

• Type 1 – Senior Crew Leader (normally transferred from another crew) • Type 2 – Crew Leader in training

• Specialised skills e.g. chainsaw operator

• 16 to 20 handcrew • 1 driver (if truck is available)

• Truck normally equiped with water tank • If transporng team truck or bakkie must be covered or fied with rails.

• Mopani District Fire Services has purchased two Tata’s for transporng crew to fires.

WORKING ON FIRE TEAMS

• For fire prevenon or fuel reducon book with Thabiso (base manager). • For fire fighng, inform Letaba Dispatch who will then inform Limpopo (Polokwane) dispatch. • Polokwane dispatch will phone you for further informaon if needed. • Landowners are responsible for Kilometer rates and raon payment if working more than 8 hours. • Letaba FPA will invoice members. Invoices are strictly 30 days. • Teams are available for free to Members, non- members pay daily rates.

• 1 Spotter (± R3 000/ hr) • 1 Huey Helicopter – 1 300L Bambi (depending on altitude) ± R21 000 per hour • 1 Helicopter support vehicle ± R15 per kilometer to refuel. • Based at Ops Centre in Politsi • ±20 minutes to Haenertsburg • Rate is from start-up to shut-down even if stood down. • Additional cost for foam • Only callers listed with LFPA can dispatch aerial resources immediately. • NO SERVICE to MEMBERS ONLY OPTION & NON-MEMBERS • Quote will be sent by LFPA after flight. Accept within 7 days of flight. • INVOICE IS STRICTLY 30 Days. • CALLER PAYS!!!!!
