Boscoe Holder (1921-2007) was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. He was Trinidad and Tobago's leading contemporary painter, who also had a celebrated international career spanning six decades as a designer and visual artist, dancer and musician. Jacob Lawrence (September 7, 1917 – June 9, 2000) • He was an African-American painter known for his portrayal of African-American life. 384 book reviews Alain Boulanger, John Cowley & Marc Monneraye Creole Music of the French West Indies: A Discography 1900–1959. Holste-Oldendorf, Germany: Bear Family Records, 2014. 367 pp. (Cloth US$61.18) This book is a rarity—a discography that dazzles: one part visual treat, one part meticulous scholarly document. Its publisher, known for lavish boxed sets of rereleased popular music of the past (mostly American and European), took its first major plunge into Caribbean music in 2006 with ten cds of classic Trinidadian recordings from the late 1930s accompanied by a thick, beautifully illustrated book including chapters by several of the world’s lead- ing calypso scholars.1 Though lacking companion cds, the present book makes an equally noteworthy contribution. It began in 2008 as a less elaborate publication with limited distribution.2 The 2014 version, vastly improved, is the only extensive discographic treatment of French Antillean music to date. Drawing on the authors’ personal archives, the audiovisual department of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the British Library Sound Archive, and a number of other libraries and private collections, it lists what must be the great majority of commercial recordings of French Caribbean music released (on 78 rpm discs, LPs, and 45 rpm singles) during roughly the first half of the twentieth century. It also includes a handful of “ethnographic recordings” made by linguists, folklorists, and musicologists during this period. The book’s two main components—the discography and historical essay— evidence years of painstaking research, and include, in addition to basic disco- graphic information (names of singers/band leaders and/or orchestras, album and/or song titles, dates, recording locations, labels, and catalog numbers), many valuable details. -

Toussaint In this paper the Spanish Main is taken to refer to the broad area stretching from Mexico to the southern tip of South America, only part of which was affected by East Indian immigration1. Until recently, little research was done regarding migration from the Caribbean to South America. A largely unexplored dimension of this phenomenon is the late nineteenth-century illegal migration of a number of Indian immigrant labourers who had been brought to the Caribbean under indenture contracts. This paper seeks to bring this migration phenomenon into focus. It examines the circumstances surrounding the illegal emigration of these Indians to the South American mainland, their experience there and the British government’s handling of this problem. Also discussed is the cultural impact of those Indian immigrants who remained on the mainland. The overall number of Indian emigrants is unknown and undoubtedly small. Ours, however, is a qualitative rather than quantitative discourse, intended to broaden the context and scope of Indian migration, and our appreciation of the myriad dimensions of their diaspora. Theoretical and Epistemological Issues There are two fundamental and reciprocating nuances to Caribbean migration historiography. Firstly, it emphasizes the movement of labour, whether forced or voluntary. Secondly, from this, historical enquiry remains focused on in-migration to the region. Out-migration, significant as part of the Caribbean experience from the inception of European and Caribbean contact, has been studied as an afterthought. One result is that the complexity of Caribbean migration has been significantly obscured2. -

REQUEST FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST - “Brand creation and design and production of multi-media products to support visibility programme on climate variability and change in CARIFORUM States” The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) and the Intra-ACP Global Climate Change Alliance Plus (GCCA+) signed an agreement for Enhancing Climate Resilience in CARIFORUM Countries for the benefit of all 16 CARIFORUM countries. The maximum amount available for this contract is estimated at USD160,000 and the estimated date for the invitation to be issued to short-listed firms is April 28, 2021. The consultancy will conceptualize, shape and develop a framework that would set forth an integrated approach for the launching of the visibility programme of the Intra ACP GCCA+ Project for CARIFORUM. The conceptual framework must be clearly set out with a well thought out brand, and concepts for multi-media products must appeal to key project stakeholders and a wide- cross section of the CARIFORUM public. The assignment will involve: ✓ creation of a brand platform with an integrated logo and slogan, colour palates and other relevant characteristics that express the vibrancy and culture of the Caribbean, while paying close attention to the overall objective of the project, which is “to support the climate compatible development of the CARIFORUM countries to combat the negative impacts of climate change and disasters, while simultaneously exploring opportunities presented goals of the overall project”. ✓ Design and production of a variety of media products that are compatible and adaptable with multi-media distribution channels including social media, traditional broadcast media, print media, on-line engagements and face to face interactions. -

The establishment of a regional hatchery facility, supporting sustainable aquaculture through the seed production of native molluscan species was discussed at the FAO workshop “Regional shellfish hatchery: A feasibility study” held in Kingston, Jamaica, in October 2010, by representatives of Caribbean Governments and experts in the field. Molluscan species are particularly targeted due to their culture potential in terms of known techniques, simple grow-out technology and low impact on surrounding environment. It is proposed that a regional molluscan hatchery would produce seed for sale and distribution to grow-out operations in the region as well as provide technical support for the research on new species. -

Between 1837 and 1920, after slavery was abolished in the British colonies and before most colonies achieved independence, approximately 750,000 laborers, primarily from India and China, traveled to the Caribbean under indenture. -
