The new taxon differs from all species of Leptanthura in the elongate antennular and antennal peduncular articles (compact in Leptanthura), the presence of a strong thumb proximally on the palm of pereopod 1 (typically a square angle in Leptanthura), and on pereopod 2 (never seen in Leptanthura), an especially long pre-palm fl exor margin on pereopod 3 (absent or short in Leptanthura), and a narrow uropodal exopod (few exceptions in Leptanthura). This is the fi rst leptanthurid from non-marine environments outside the Atlantic. These are described and illustrated in detail under the names: Ampithoe hirsutimanus, Batea schotti, Caribboecetes Justi, Cerapus ttiomasi, Lambos scdostemum, Nasaganaia comisariensis, and Seba mbusta. INTRODUCTION The peracarid crustacean fauna from the Caribbean coast of northern South America is still very incompletely documented. Recent studies indicate the existence of a rich fauna along this region. Along the Colombian coast, for example, a considerable number of interesting or previously undescribed isopod species have been found (Muller, 1988a, b; 1989; 1990a, b, c, d; 1991; 1992; 1993a, b, c; Kensley and Schotte, 1994). In contrast, reports on amphipods from this coast are sparse, and only a few species have been recorded by Barnard (1954), Calero (1982), and Ortiz (1983). In an effort to increase a collection base for systematic studies of the crustacean fauna from this coast, one of the authors (R.L.) conducted qualitative sampling in various shore habitats south of the city of Cartagena, Colombia, during the months of March and July of 1991. -

INTRODUCTION The Anthuridea have found increased interest during the last' few years and the number of known species is growing fast. These crustaceans are obviously present all over the world in the marine benthos and in some brackish and freshwater habitats. In the course of ex~editionsand benthic surveys of the last decades many new species were discovered, often with the help of diving techniques and by careful sorting of the samples. At present 57 genera and 321 species are known. In table 1, one can see how many spe- cies were described only in the past 10 years. For someone who is not constantly following the taxonomic publicat- ions it is difficult to find out which names are valid today, what synonyms exist, how many species are known and from which part of the world. The present paper will help those who are not familiar with this group of Isopoda to get the necessarv information. It is notable in having a uropod with almost cylindrical terminal rami, lacking the typical anthuroid uropodal structure in which the fl attened exopod is attached to the peduncle dorsolaterally and more proximal to the terminal endopod. Th e species has all the other features of Anthuroidea (cylindrical body, mandibular spine row absent or evident as lamina dentata, maxilla 2 fused with the lower lip as a hypopharynx) and many features of the family Anthuridae (paired statocysts, fused pleonites, compact mandible, pereopods 2 and 3 propodus with single palmar ro- bust seta) and is placed in this family as a new genus and species, Leipanthura casuarina, close to Anthura, Exallanthura and Ptilanthura. -

A Phylogenetic Analysis of the Isopoda with Some Classificatory Recommendations
A PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF THE ISOPODA WITH SOME CLASSIFICATORY RECOMMENDATIONS RICHARD C. BRUSCA AND GEORGE D.F. ISSN 0079-8835. The phylogenetic relationships of the isopod crustacean suborders are assessed using cladistic methodology. The monophyly of the Flabellifera was tested by including all 15 component families separately in the analysis. Four other peracarid orders (Mysidacea, Amphipoda, Mictacea, and Tanaidacea) were used as multiple out-groups to root our phylogenetic estimates within the Isopoda. A broad range of possible characters for use in assessing isopod relationships is discussed and a final data (character) matrix was selected. This data matrix, comprising 29 taxa and 92 characters, was subjected to computer-assisted analysis using four different phylogenetic programs: HENNIG86, PAUP, PHYLIP, and MacClade. Phylogenetic hypotheses from the literature (particularly Wagele, 1989a) are discussed and compared with our own conclusions. The following hypotheses are suggested by our analysis. The Isopoda constitutes a monophyletic group. The Phreatoicidea is the earliest derived group of living isopods, followed by an Asellota-Microcerberidea line, and next the Oniscidea. Above the Onis- cidea is a large clade of 'long-tailed' isopod taxa (Valvifera, Anthuridea, Flabellifera, Epicaridea, Gnathiidea). The Microcerberidea is the sister group of the Asellota, but probably should not be included in the Asellota. The Oniscidea constitutes a monophyletic group. The monotypic taxon Calabozoidea is either a primitive oniscidean, or is a sister group of the Oniscidea (Calabozoa is not an asellotan).
