Are Long-Term Inflation Expectations Well Anchored in Brazil, Chile and Mexico?∗ Michiel De Pooter† Patrice Robitaille† Ian Walker Michael Zdinak Federal Reserve Board of Governors First draft: March 2013 This draft: December 2013 Abstract In this paper, we consider whether long-term inflation expectations have become better anchored in Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. We do so using survey-based measures as well as financial- market-based measures of long-term inflation expectations, where we construct the market-based measures from daily prices on nominal and inflation-linked bonds. This paper is the first to examine the evidence from Brazil and Mexico, making use of the fact that markets for long- term government debt have become better developed over the past decade. We find that inflation expectations have become much better anchored over the past decade in all three countries, as a testament to the improved credibility of the central banks in these countries when it comes to keeping inflation low. That said, one-year inflation compensation in the far future displays some sensitivity to at least one macroeconomic data release per country. However, the impact of these releases is small and it does not appear that investors systematically alter their expectations for inflation as a result of surprises in monetary policy, consumer prices, or real activity variables. Finally, long-run inflation expectations in Brazil appear to have been less well anchored than in Chile and Mexico. Keywords: Inflation targeting, survey expectations, inflation compensation, Nelson-Siegel model, macro news suprises, Brazil, Chile, Mexico JEL classification: D84, E31, E43, E44, E52, E58, G14 ∗We thank Refet G¨urkaynak, Andrew Levin, Jonathan Wright, participants at the 2013 Research Conference of the International Journal of Central Banking in Warsaw and the 2013 LACEA Meeting in Mexico City, and seminar participants at the Federal Reserve Board and the Bank of Mexico for very helpful comments.

  • Cross-Asset Class Roadmap
March 31, 2011 Identical versions of this letter have been addressed directly to the heads of the primary supervisory agency of each of the regulated signatories. The Honorable William C. Dudley President Federal Reserve Bank of New York 33 Liberty Street, 10F New York, NY 10045 Dear Mr. Dudley, The undersigned dealers (each, a "G14 Member") and buy-side institutions, (collectively, the "Signatories") remain committed to work collaboratively with central counterparties, infrastructure providers and global supervisors to continue to make structural improvements to the global over-the- counter (OTC) derivatives markets1. Acknowledging the importance of these markets and recognizing the need to further enhance the framework for OTC derivatives risk management and market structure, we continue to engage in setting forth a comprehensive and strategic roadmap of initiatives and commitments to the Supervisors of the OTC Derivatives Supervisors Group (“ODSG”) listed below2. This roadmap builds upon the significant collective accomplishments we have made pursuant to the series of seven commitment letters written since 2005. This broadly-based and inclusive collaborative framework has provided the basis for a substantial degree of interaction between Supervisors and Signatories in bringing about meaningful improvements to a globally important market. In accordance with G-20 objectives and in an effort to support pending regulatory reforms in various jurisdictions, we have developed a roadmap of continuing improvements which we present in this letter. These initiatives and commitments build upon supervisory and regulatory priorities set forth in previous letters in the areas of standardization, central clearing, bilateral risk management, and transparency, and attempt to harmonize these goals with existing regulatory proposals.

The Value of Political Connections in Fascist Italy - Stock ∗ Market Returns and Corporate Networks Tiziana Foresti,∗∗ Nadia Garbellini,∗∗∗ and Ariel Luis Wirkierman∗∗∗∗ Keywords: Italian Economic History, Fascism, Event Studies, Social Network Analysis, Value of Political Connections, Political Economy JEL Classification: N24, C58, G14, N84, P16 1. Introduction Recent years have witnessed the flourishing of a body of economic literature concerned with the search for empirical evidence of a positive relation between political connections, economic rent and the value of firms. As a brief survey of some of these works will show, we find in this literature a wide range of definitions of “political connectedness” – from (broadly understood) personal relationships between firms’ owners or the members of its boards and politicians, through financial support offered by firms to electoral campaigns, to the political positions held (now or in the past) by directors of the boards. Johnson and Mitton (2003) present empirical evidence that, in September 1998, Malaysian firms with strong personal ties to the Prime Minister Mahathir benefited from the imposing of capital controls. Khwaja and Mian (2005), by contrast, classify a Pakistani firm as “political connected” if its director participates in an election, and offer accordingly a quantitative estimation of the rent costs of politically connected firms in banking for the Pakistani economy in the years between 1996 and 2002. Faccio et al. (2006), however, do not include contributions to political campaigns or direct (undisclosed) payments to politicians in the definition of political connectedness that they employ in their examination of the link between political connections and corporate bailouts in 35 countries over the period 1997 through 2002.
