YCaIJ' te LOS GLACIARES NATIONAL PARK, Puerto allego ARGENTINA

OW In this, the third article on the CBC trip to Argentina and Chile in Februa,y-March 1995, David Truman offers some comments on Argentina 's spectacular Los Glaciares National Park

The park extends for about 300 kilometres northwaids along the eastern side of the Andes, from immediately north of Torres del Paine in Chile to the redoubtable Monte Fitz Roy (3375 m).

It contains a large part of the Hielo Sur (Southern Icecap), including the huge Moreno, Uppsala and Viedma glaciers and many smaller ones. Remarkably, these descend to immense blue lakes set in cold desert. From the eastern edge of the mountains right across to the Atlantic, the Patagonian steppe is very dry, cool and constantly windy. No trees here, except introduced willows along the cold blue rivers that swirl eastwards, reminding one of the Clutha of New Zealand's South Island. Endless tussock and spiny low bushes dot the grey pebbly ground, while sharp bare hills give variety to the landscape within 100 km of the main cordillera.

Stopping-off point for all points in the Park is the dusty little tourist town of Calaâte (population around 3000). We bused there from Puerto Natales in Chile - a trip that couldn't be done by public transport only a few years ago. Bus Zaahj charged us about SUS30 for the one-way journey - very reasonable for a six-hour ride. (There are also frequent bus services to Calthte from Rio Gailegos by El Pingaino)

The Park and surrounds contain three main attractions: the Moreno Glacier at the southwestern end of Lago Argentino; cruising on Lago Argentino itself, especially up the North Arm to the Uppsala and Onelli Glaciers (only one of our party, Elizabeth Kelly, was able to do this trip, so I haven't described it); and the El Chalten area 250 km northwest of Calafate, containing the adjacent jagged peaks of Fitz Roy and Cerro Tone ('tower peak').

The Moreno Glacier

Numerous companies run excursions to the Moreno Glacier. The best one (run from the Youth Hostel) offers a longer and more scenic route to and from the glacier, gives you a good commentary on the natural history of the area, and lets you do a longer walk along the lake shore before bringing you to close to the glacier. We saw huge wind-hollowed icebergs floating in the Canal de los Tempanos (Icebergs Channel) below the glacier's 60 metre high ice wall. That's right: the glacier stands above the water to the height of a 20 storey building!

The Moreno Glacier is considered unique because until very recently it has been constantly advancing. Ice funnelled in from a wide collector area flows through a The Moreno Glacier frum the Peninsula Magalianes channel about 2 kilometres wide until it strikes a steep hill directly in its path. It then blocks off an arm of Lago Argentino, and over the next 34 years the water level in the blocked-off arm rises, and the lake there spills over a large area, until the pressure of water upon the ice dam becomes so enormous that great cracks and fissures appear and after a day or so of tortured fracturing water breaks through the ice wall and huge blocks of ice are calved into the Canal de los Tempanos and thence into the main body of Lago Argentino. The last time this happened was in late February 1988. Since then the ice wall has stabilized just short of the blocking hill, the rate of iceberg calving being about the sante as the rate of advance. The glacier's heavily rippled profile of deep blue and white remains a most impressive sight. Like all glaciers, it generates its own weather: frequent showers and a powerful freezing wind that never stops blowing.

Canberra Bushwalking Club IT November1995 page 4 El Clicitén area: Fiti Roy and Cerro Tone

II The Fitz Roy Walk: From a puesto (outstation building) on the road the track (signposted 'Rio Blanco') starts up through dry Antarctic beech forest and sidles to the right until eventually it reaches a rocky mirador (observation point) giving a first view of the main cordillera, dominated by Fitz Roy and adjacent steep glaciers. The track continues through shrubs of beech and passes a track junction on the left leading to the campsite at Laguna Capri, before arriving at a delightfiul pampa (grassy meadow), through which flows the clear Chorrillo del Salto ('stream from the waterfall'). In bright sunlight it is glorious to sit by the stream and soak up the view of upturned fingers of pink and grey rock hung with rings of ice. - - -

Alter some easy walking, the track eventually crosses the Chorrillo del Salto and passes across a shrubby slope before eventually reaching the Rio Blanco ('white '). There are two campsites on the eastern side of the river - Poincenot to the south and Rio Blanco to the north, not far below, the crossing. (The detour to Poincenot continues past Lago Madre e Hija and after almost three hours walking joins the track to Cerro Torte.)

Continuing towards Fitz Roy, on the fix side of the stream the main track enters beech forest, rising gradually until it reaches the 'Fitz Roy base camp', a rude refliglo (hut) of logs, branches and plastic sheeting, used by mountain climbers. There is a second refuglo 50 metres further into the trees, away from the track - doubtless missed by many hurrying by..

Large blocks of

Return to the campsite is by the same route, or alternathcly - if you've started out early and are pretty fit - you can turn right after'crossing the Rio Blanco and take the link track to Cerro Tone and back to the camp ground that way. This makes for a pittty long da5' - Brian, Denis and Doug all arrived back at camp after dark.

Canbena Bushwalking Club IT November 1995 page 5

I The Cerro Torre Walk: The track to Cerro Tone leaves the road only about 150 metres south of the track to Fit.z Roy. It climbs up a dry slope and enters dry beech woods (interesting, this: Antarctic beech grows in South America in much drier places than it does in New Zealand, Tasmania or the Australian mainland). After close to an hour and half the track reaches a mirador from which you can look up the extensive forested valley of the Rio Fitz Roy, dominated by the three extraordinary spires of Cerro Tone - its shape almost reminiscent of the acute spires of Gaudi's famous Church of the Holy Family (in Barcelona).

Appearances can deceive, and it's quite a fair walk still before the track brings you over a moraine wall to the Jim Bridweu campsite and the edge of Laguna Tone. The lake has steep scree banks and at the far end the Torre Glacier ends in a brown and white wall, far below the three soaring pinnacles of Cerro Tone, Egger Tone and Cerro Standhardt. if the weather's good, the view is magnificent. If it's misty the walk can be a big disappointment. Return is by the same way. if one gets up at dawn it is possible to walk to Lago Tone and back to the camp ground in time to catch a 2pm bus.
