It suggests that blogs perform three main functions, which help make a democracy more meaningful: blogs as fifth estate, blogs as networks, and blogs as platform for expression. First, blogs function as the fifth estate performing checks-and-balances over the government. This function is expressed by blogs’ role in the dissemination of information, providing alternative perspectives that challenge the dominant frame, and setting of news agenda. The second function of blogs is that they perform as networks. This is linked to the social-networking aspect of the blogosphere both online and offline. Blogs also have the potential to act as mobilizing agents. The mobilizing capability of blogs facilitated the mass street protests, which took place in late- 2007 and early-2008 in Malaysia.

The Region: Geopolitical Overview Southeast Asia has become an increasingly important focus of global geopolitics. The tensions that have built up in the South China Sea in the past two years have recently found outlets in acts of aggres- sion and assertion, casting into doubt some countries’ longstanding policies of appeasement and en- gagement. China’s development of its maritime military capacity and clear indications of its determina- tion to safeguard its economic interests seem to contrast with statements of its intent to “firmly stick to the path of peaceful development”. China’s decision to site oil rig HD 981 in waters claimed by Vietnam as part of its Exclusive Economic Zone may reflect policy disagreements in Beijing, but it also highlights the difference between China’s long-term or historical perspective of the situation in the South China Sea and the more rules-based approach taken by the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which are engaged in negotiations with China on a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea. The United States’ interest in seeing early agreement on the code does not coincide with China’s view of the future of the South China Sea. ASEAN states are thus presented with the dilemma of living the reality of US “strategic balancing” in Asia, of traditional economic power Japan now restat- ing its relevance to the region, and of China’s assertiveness as a rising power.

BN Needs to Refresh its Strategy in Teluk Intan Bernama May 26, 2014 By Norshazlina Nor'azman KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) -- Her appealing looks and witty approach is something difficult to ignore. In fact, right in the midst of the election heat, it seems Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, 27, the DAP candidate in the Teluk Intan by-election on May 31, is seen as a darling by many. Nonetheless, her opponent, Barisan Nasional's (BN) Datuk Mah Siew Keong, 53, is local born and has a proven track record in politics and in serving the people. Dyana Sofya is no match to this seasoned politician of BN, at least in experience and service record. In fact, she had admitted that Mah's vast experience and disposition posed a serious challenge to her in the straight fight. "Being a youngster and taking on a more experienced and highly respected opponent in Teluk Intan, is something that I have to face," she said recently. DAP's adviser Lim Kit Siang too admitted that it was no easy road in maintaining the seat especially after the party took a bold step of nominating a young Malay lass, Dyana Sofya. Dyana Sofya is also Lim's political secretary, and the Chinese based party's move to field a Malay candidate had created some furor at both sides of the divide. Allocation for Rela Uniforms Provided Through BN Parliamentary Members – Ahmad Zahid Bernama May 25, 2014 TELUK INTAN, May 25 (Bernama) -- Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today stressed that the allocation to supply uniforms to members of the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) is channeled through the Barisan Nasional's (BN) parliamentary members in their own constituencies. Ahmad Zahid said the BN parliamentary representatives were encouraged to allocate RM50,000 to supply camouflage uniforms to Rela members in their constituencies as an incentive for the rebranding of the team. "There are 133 BN Parliamentary members, so only Rela members in these 133 areas will get their supply of uniforms because these Parliamentarians have provided allocation for them," he told reporters. Ahmad Zahid was commenting on a news portal report which claimed that if BN candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong won the Teluk Intan Parliamentary seat by-election on May 31, all the RELA members who had not yet received new uniforms would immediately be given them. Earlier, he had attended a session to meet police staff at the Tactical Base (MARTEK) here Sunday. "What I said was that if the member of parliament was from the BN, it would be easier to provide the allocation to Rela in Teluk Intan," he said. However, Ahmad Zahid said there was nothing to stop a parliamentarian from the opposition to provide the Rela uniforms in their own constituencies. "I am using this opportunity to say that the BN MPs are considerate to supply uniforms to the Rela members in their own parliamantary areas, don't twist the story," he said.
