(1/24/07) — Arkansas State dropped a 64-59 heart- breaker to Western Kentucky Wednesday night at ASU’s Convocation Center. The loss puts the Lady Indians at 14-7 overall and 7-3 in Sun Belt Conference play. WKU is 13-5 and 7-2. It was a duel throughout the night between ASU’s Adrianne Davie and the Lady Toppers’ Crystal Kelly with Kelly ending the night with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Davie, a senior from Little Rock had 21 and eight boards. One bright spot for the Tribe was Rudy Sims set a new mark for assists in a career. The senior from Memphis needed five going into the contest to pass former leader Beth Penn who had 479 during her 1984-87 career. Sims, who had seven on the night, now has 482. “One of the things I can’t stand is sports cliches,” said ASU Head Coach Brian Boyer. “But, in this case, I think one of those cliches came to light and that is ‘they wanted it more than we did.’ I think that’s a cop out and a cliche, but the bottom line is it took place tonight. “Give credit to Western Kentucky. They came in more aggressive right from the start. (Dominique) Duck buried her head and came right at us and had us on our heels. Turnovers? We were just very careless with the basketball and got to offensive rebounds late. The cliche came true. They just wanted those things more than we did.” The game opened a little shaky for the Lady Indians who picked up seven quick team fouls while WKU had none. Duck, who had 17 points on the night for WKU, hit seven free throws during this span and ended up with 11 for the half. ASU led only once in the first half, 5-4, with 17:56 showing. The Toppers held the lead after that until Ali Carter went to the free throw line at 4:18 and nailed both shots to knot the score, 23-23. Kelly came back to score a bucket followed by Kenzie Rich’s three pointer for Western to take a 30-25 lead in at the half. The Lady Indians chipped away early in the second half when Davie hit a jumper to give ASU the 33-32 edge at the 16:49 mark. Western came back and both teams traded baskets until Davie tied the score up again at 46-46 at 10:24 after hitting a couple of free throws. Davie connected on a couple more free throws with 7:43 left in the game to give ASU the 50-48 lead, and Brittney Hiles extended it to four at the free throw line after a foul by WKU’s Crystal. Crystal stepped to the line and hit two of four attempts of her own with 16 seconds remaining and Brianne Carter hit both of hers with four seconds left to seal the win for the visitors.
